Send us Fan MailBen MastersBen Masters and I first met about a decade ago at the energizing DO Lectures in Hopeland, California and have remained friends ever since.  At the time he was in Los Angeles working on his latest film with his crew of three who drove to Ventura for a surf.  In the evening we gathered in the ’56 Kenskill trailer as Ben reflected about surfing his longest wave, filmmaking, and environmental conservationism. His dedicated efforts delve into some of the most pressing ecological challenges facing the American West today.  Along with being a talented filmmaker and writer, specializing in wildlife and adventure stories, Ben has made significant contributions through his captivating documentaries and impactful storytelling.  He crushes it as a fearless Vaquero!Ben studied wildlife biology at Texas A&M University which fueled his passion for wildlife-focused storytelling.  He founded Fin and Fur Films, a production company creating short films about wildlife research, conservation, and activism, and has authored two books published by Texas A&M University Press.  In addition, his endeavors have been recognized in National Geographic and Western Horseman.Ben has enjoyed fruitful collaborations with: The Wildlife Society, Borderlands Research Institute, YETI, and Texas Parks and Wildlife Foundation.  He rides his life passionately and courageously through challenging terrians, bravely facing obstacles in order to document untold wildlife experiences with film to promote its conservation.Fin and Fur produces films from idea conception through distribution, focused on environmental themes, including the restoration of endangered species and advocating for healthy river ecosystems.  His team utilize film to raise awareness and inspire action for wildlife and habitat preservation.Ben Masters’ work is truly inspiring, and his dedication to wildlife and storytelling shines through in his films and writing.  Enjoy this episode with Maverick, Ben Masters! Documentaries to date:·       “The River and The Wall” (2019): Directed by Ben, this feature-length documentary, which won an award at SXSW, explores the natural beauty and challenges along the U.S.-Mexico border.·       “Unbranded” (2015): Ben produced this documentary, which received the Audience Award at Mountainfilm. Episode 13: Eduardo Garcia-Charged with Love

Send us Fan MailIn this episode you will meet my dear friend, Eduardo Garcia.  A celebrity American Chef, Avid world class hunter, surfer, fisherman, and wild foods explorer. We met up here in Ventura late spring 2024. Eduardo, my wife Kelly and I had a sunset-moonrise beach cooked dinner in a sandy shack on the beach in West Ventura. It was so cool to see the fire reflect in Ed’s eyes seeing his curiosity and hunger for wild outdoor adventure. The next day we paddled out at Rincon surf break and no shit, we were the only ones out! The perfect little waist to chest high sets rolled in and yes, Eduardo paddled into one, perfect form.. and with style and grace Eduardo went pumping down the line for 100 yards. It was so f’n cool! In the episode Eduardo talks about his mom and dad and growing up in Bozeman, Montana, where his father was a fisherman and chef, and his mother was an astrologer, Montessori teacher, and author. He tells the story of his dad, Manual Alfredo Garcia Castilla “Poppy” and how he gave him good sound advice that Ed will later use in his life’s journey. Attempting to remove a claw with his knife, he received a severe electrical shock from a hidden 2400-volt power line beneath the bear’s carcass. Knocked to the ground and severely burned to near death, he was alone and miles from help, Eduardo got up and took his first step towards what would ultimately be years of recovery and rehabilitation.  A feature length documentary film was made about this accident. It is called Charged. Episode 12: Sean Willmore The Thin Green Line

Send us Fan MailWhen Sean Willmore and I met over 10 years ago, we felt an immediate bond as if we had known each other for years. Maintaining close contact, I had the good fortune to visit with Sean last month on this side of the pond. While in Ventura meeting with a member of the Holdfast Collective, he discussed his endeavors protecting extensive acreage of wild lands for its conservation in perpetuity.  That afternoon we met up at a local pub, sharing stories with photographer, world traveler, and surfer, Andrew Fish. Stories from the Trailer #12 unfolded with Sean Willmore, whose organic flow and authentic spirit will envelop you with hope.   Sean is a former Australian Park Ranger with 11 years of experience, the Founder and Managing Director of the Thin Green Line Foundation. He is a past President of the International Rangers Federation (IRF), a non-profit organization comprising 60 Ranger Associations in 46 countries. As you will hear in Episode 12, the IRF's mission is to raise awareness of and support the critical work carried out by park rangers conserving our natural, wild, biodiverse fauna, flora, and cultural heritages. Twenty years ago Sean embarked on a remarkable journey, selling his car and remortgaging his house three times to create a documentary film, The Thin Green Line. Over the course of 14 months, he traveled to 23 different countries across 6 continents, capturing the lives and stories of rangers. The film, screened in 50 countries, sheds light on the life threatening challenges faced by these dedicated conservation warriors. Episode 11: Timmy O'Neill-The Top and Bottom Equals Love

Send us Fan MailTimmy O’Neill and I worked together at Patagonia. I worked, and he traveled the world as the funniest, most whimsical climbing ambassador I had ever met. Timmy would visit with me at the Patagonia’s front desk, fielding calls from around the world. It was like we were a comedic team with headsets on!  Some callers thought they had reached the wrong number.  Timmy O'Neill is a professional rock climber, first ascensionist, public speaker, guide, and comedian.  Originally from East Lansdowne, Pennsylvania, Timmy discovered his passion for climbing after kayaking as a child. His teenage years saw him scaling the cables of the Brooklyn Bridge and exploring the heights of Yellowstone. He even left Temple University after just one semester to work at the Old Faithful Gift Shop in Yellowstone and later in Yosemite.Following early speed ascents of Yosemite's 3,000 foot El Capitan, O’Neill has dedicated his time to a life of international exploration and giving back through ‘adventure impact’ - the combination of outdoor adventure and social impact.  Here are some of his legendary climbing highlights:1.   Speed Climbing Record: In 2001, alongside Dean Potter, Timmy set the then-speed record for the iconic “Nose” climb on El Capitan in Yosemite National Park, conquering it in an impressive three hours and twenty-four minutes.2.   Film Appearances: He’s been featured in several climbing films, including Return2Sender, Front Range Freaks, and most recently, 180 Degrees South.3.   Comedy and Adventure: Timmy’s humorous side shines through in his non-fiction comedy, Across the Atlas, which recounts an adventure in Morocco.  His alter ego, “Dr. Steven ‘Death Zone’ Clark” is portrayed in his theatrical performance, Mallory Revisited. Send us Fan Mail   It's Episode 10 and I’m here with my dad, Bruce Hamilton Bell who grew up in the Hollywood Hills with his dog Scout.  He describes how my grandparents met, along with how he met my mom, Sandy, and shares his experiences in the US Navy.  Bruce Bell was a renowned bowling champion, reputed far and wide, as the "social chemist” bar tender, and earned the moniker, "Brutus the Baffling,” prestidigitator (aka magician).
