Celebrating 145 Years of Tuskegee University | History, HERstory & Legacy Episode
Send us Fan MailWhat an incredible day at Tuskegee University!Join hosts Jazzie Jones and Tahani Young as Ladies of the Hive™ takes you to the 145th Anniversary Celebration of one of America's most influential institutions. Walking through the historic student-built home of Booker T. Washington and Margaret Murray Washington, then standing on its steps overlooking the historic grounds of Tuskegee University, was a powerful reminder that History isn't just found in books—it's found in the people, places, craftsmanship, and legacies that continue to inspire generations. As I walked through the home, I couldn't help but think of my own grandmother's house and the memories that live on through the places we hold dear. One of the highlights of the day was interviewing Tuskegee Mayor Chris Lee and Dr. Kwesi Daniels, Head of the Department of Architecture, Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science. We didn't mind standing in the Alabama heat because some conversations are simply too important not to capture. Together, we discussed Tuskegee's remarkable legacy, its future, and why preserving these stories matters. We were also deeply moved by a powerful presentation of Frederick Douglass' "What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?"—a moment that reminded us why History must continue to be told honestly, completely, and courageously. At Ladies of the Hive™, we believe HERstory and History together create a richer, more complete understanding of our past. Our mission isn't to replace anyone's story, but to help ensure that the voices, contributions, leadership, and achievements of women are seen, heard, documented, and celebrated as an integral part of the History they have always helped shape. Through conversations rooted in agriculture, education, leadership, entrepreneurship, and community, we hope to inspire future generations to build upon the legacy of those who came before us.As I stood on the steps of the historic student-built home of Booker T. Washington and Margaret Murray Washington, I couldn't help but think about the students whose hands laid the bricks, shaped the wood, and built more than a house—they built a legacy. One hundred forty-five years later, the home is still standing. The university is still standing. The work continues. The mission lives on. And perhaps that's one of Tuskegee's greatest lessons: when you build with purpose, your work can outlive you.So grab your favorite beverage, your favorite taco, kick your feet up, sit back, relax, and join us for another episode of Ladies of the Hive™.
