Welcome to Podcast #36, the second in our series Golf: A Game for Life. Today you’ll hear real world golfers of all levels of experience and skill answer my question “What does golf mean to you?” Meet our roster of golfers that shared with all of us the ”lessons, advantages, experiences, and friendships” they discovered on the golf course.
Based on what’s going on in world today with the economic challenges and the various community issues, its more than a “full time job” some days just taking care of ourselves and our families. So, where does that leave those folks and organizations that need help and what role can business play? The subject of “charity” has come up around “the business roundtable” here at Summit Club, so we thought we’d reach out and get some answers.
We delved into the "dilemma" some time ago, when the media reported on the scandalous practice of wealthy parents doling out "fortunes" to secure their children's admission to prestigious schools, often through fraudulent means such as falsifying athletic credentials. Given the staggering amount of student debt that burdens many graduates – rivaling the gross national product of a small nation – we wondered if it was time to consider a different approach, one akin to that advocated by Mike Rowe: pursuing a skill-based career that offers a viable alternative to a traditional college education.
We believe golf truly is a game for life, no matter your age, physical condition, mental acuity or mobility. 6.2 million new or “lapsed” golfers discovered (or rediscovered) the game during the pandemic as a great outdoor sport with fresh air, social distancing (less skill producing more distance!) and the ability to socialize, build relationships, and have fun.
So, the saying goes something like “if we don’t understand history, we’re bound to repeat it”. Nobody wants to repeat these 18 months of covid19! What were the learnings? What did we do differently? What do we choose to embrace and carry forward and what do we never want to experience again, ever!
