Jay Acunzo: Don’t market more. Matter more.

Quality vs. Quantity. Followers vs. Engagement. Reach vs. Resonance? Which is more important? When work matters more, we need to hustle for attention less. In this episode, Jay Acunzo helps us put to rest our “Maker Monsters” – procrastination, overthinking, imposter syndrome, and all the invisible barriers that keep us from shipping great work. It’s been months since we released our last episode, and this one might very well be the final chapter of The Subtle Art of Not Yelling. There’s no one I’d rather have close out this incredible three-year journey than Jay, bringing it to a fitting and meaningful conclusion.Jay is a speaking and messaging strategist trusted by creators, consultants, authors, and brands like Mailchimp, Wistia, and Salesforce to find the big idea, clarify the message, and craft stories and experiences to differentiate and resonate. His podcast “How Stories Happen” dissects signature stories from people like Seth Godin (marketing legend with 22 bestselling business books), Ann Handley (WSJ bestselling author of Everybody Writes), and Chase Jarvis. Please enjoy.Chapters01:57 The Journey of “Unthinkable” (Jay’s previous podcast)06:02 Resonance Over Reach: The Key to Impactful Content11:13 Fueling Creativity: Intrinsic Motivation and Self-Imposed Deadlines15:18 From Good to Effective: The Power of Storytelling17:23 The Storyteller's Posture: Embracing Personal Experiences21:29 Moving Towards Action: Inspiring the Urge to Act26:39 Childhood Aspirations29:48 The Desire to Create: Finding True Passion34:22 Balancing Quality and Quantity in Creative Work36:09 Developing a Practice for Growth and Success39:17 The Craft of Storytelling: Creating Compelling Narratives51:46 Storytelling in Business: Building Connections and Driving GrowthConnect with Jay: https://jayacunzo.comThis podcast is your weekly Creative Companion helping you master the inner game, finish what you start, ship your work, and build a brand without yelling; because it’s not the thunder that grows flowers, but the rain.Support & ConnectPodcast website: subtleartofnotyelling.comSubscribe on YouTube: www.youtube.com/@notyellingThank you for listening.

The Growth Paradox: Finding Stability in Uncertainty

Bill and Miles explore the discomfort and chaos that comes with growth and stepping out of your comfort zone. We crave control and predictability, but the path to true stability come from walking into the unknown with eyes wide open. Chaos, uncertainty, and the unknown are only “bad” when you make them bad. Instead, these can become your lifelong friends. But it’s not easy. Let’s get into it. The Seeking Cycle: Why We Seek, Even When We Already Know

The Seeking Cycle: Why We Seek, Even When We Already Know

Why We Seek, Even When The Answer Is Right In Front of Us (and what to do instead). Many of us are addiction to overcomplication. We subconsciously obsess over finding new answers to the same old problems. We’re addicted to guidance but suck at remembering what we’re taught. Your brain has huge blind spots. Information is addicting (especially today with all the “learn how to make every person stop scrolling” tactics out there). But information is worthless unless retained, organized, and integrated. 95%+ of info is worthless to you at the moment you’re consuming it, but it will make you feel like it’s the only thing that matters. This is why coaches and online programs can make millions selling the most obvious information ever. We crave new information or information organized in a new way, or told to us by someone new. Your brain is hackable and these people are great at hacking it to make money. But at the end of the day, it’s no ones fault but yours. We have to protect out attention and energy at all costs. Ultimately, breaking free from the seeking cycle, like anything, requires a gradual shift in mindset and habits. By taking ownership of your actions and committing to consistent effort, you can move beyond the cycle of seeking and start making meaningful progress towards your goals. -- The Inner Brand (newsletter): Here’s a step by step process to break free from the seeking cycle and go from passive consumption to intentional engagement: https://brandthrive.substack.com/p/why-we-seek-even-when-the-answer -- This podcast is your weekly Creative Companion helping you master the inner game, finish what you start, ship your work, and build a brand without yelling; because it’s not the thunder that grows flowers, but the rain. Simplifying Money and Taxes for Creatives with Hannah Cole

Navigating the Financial Landscape as a Creative with Hannah Cole (Artist, Tax pro, and Founder of Sunlight Tax). Most creative brains aren’t skilled at taxes and accounting. Taxes often feel confusing, scary, and overwhelming, but they don’t have to. In the episode, we’ll share insights and advice for creatives on managing their finances and taxes. Hannah Cole, founder of Sunlight Tax, is a tax expert who specializes in working with creative businesses and mission-driven solopreneurs. A long-time working artist herself, she’s helped tens of thousands of self-employed people skill up with accessible tax and money education, through her Money Bootcamp program, speaking engagements from Florida to Alaska, and on the Sunlight podcast. Hannah is great at teaching taxes because she’s messed it all up, and been in the ‘bad place.’ She doesn't teach from a place of superiority or judgment, but from a place of understanding. We discuss the importance of tax education for creative professionals. Hannah shares her journey of transitioning from being an artist to starting her own tax business. She highlights the myths and stumbling blocks that artists and freelancers often face when it comes to money. Hannah also discusses the challenges of finding balance and setting boundaries between her artistic and accounting pursuits. — Connect with Hannah Cole: sunlighttax.com sunlighttax.com/podcast @sunlighttax — Timestamps 2:57 The Need for Tax Education 6:05 The Challenges of Perfectionism 9:11 Transitioning from Artist to Accountant 12:09 Starting Sunlight Tax 16:35 Myths and Stumbling Blocks Around Money 19:36 The Importance of Taxes and Empathy 25:55 Growing Sunlight Tax 28:29 Overcoming Imposter Syndrome 31:07 Finding Balance and Setting Boundaries 37:51 Honoring the Season and Focusing on the Present 39:33 The Usefulness of Tax Software for Freelancers 42:23 Separate Bank Account for Business Expenses 44:14 Paying Yourself as a Freelancer 45:09 Double Entry Bookkeeping and Equity 48:31 Finding Help with Taxes and Financial Management 52:29 Hannah's Introverted-Extroverted Nature 53:13 Hannah's Art and Websites — This podcast is your weekly Creative Companion helping you master the inner game, finish what you start, ship your work, and build a brand without yelling; because it’s not the thunder that grows flowers, but the rain.
