I Didn’t Want To Do This
🎙️Episode 59: I came back from six and a half weeks in Canada planning to take it easy. That lasted about five minutes. I got sick in my first week back. Then I got my entire leadership team sick. Which meant someone had to be on the floor looking after our clients and that someone was me. This one's a bit of a yap. I'm talking about the money that hit me the second I landed, the $10k I made in under 30 hours with zero bookings in my column, and the fact that being back behind the chair made me rethink what I actually want the next chunk of my career to look like. Because I've been chasing "off the floor" for years, and maybe it turns out that's not the thing that makes me happy. What we cover: Coming home to chaos. Six and a half weeks away with the family, jet lag that flattened me, and a virus I generously shared with my whole leadership team. Hit after hit. Dental work, sponsorship costs, an ATO bill, backdated TAFE reimbursements for the apprentices. All in the same few weeks. Even I find some months scary. $10k in under 30 hours. No bookings in my column when I walked in. How I filled it with online marketing and last-minute clients, and what that told me about my own value. "On the business" is not the goal. Why it's completely fine to love being on the floor, and what your presence actually does for your team's morale. 26 years in, 15 as an owner. What I want the next stretch to look like — and why the salon gives me more than the digital stuff ever has. The $100k profit goal. The extra $100k I'm going for this year, and how I'm using AI to clear the back-office admin so I can build the schedule I actually want. Bringing in a bookkeeper. One day a week, freelance, to handle payroll, TAFE schedules, cash flow and budgets. Because I shouldn't be doing it at 9pm on a Sunday. Mentioned in this episode Fix your margins.
