I Didn’t Want To Do This

🎙️Episode 59: I came back from six and a half weeks in Canada planning to take it easy. That lasted about five minutes. I got sick in my first week back. Then I got my entire leadership team sick. Which meant someone had to be on the floor looking after our clients and that someone was me. This one's a bit of a yap. I'm talking about the money that hit me the second I landed, the $10k I made in under 30 hours with zero bookings in my column, and the fact that being back behind the chair made me rethink what I actually want the next chunk of my career to look like. Because I've been chasing "off the floor" for years, and maybe it turns out that's not the thing that makes me happy. What we cover: Coming home to chaos. Six and a half weeks away with the family, jet lag that flattened me, and a virus I generously shared with my whole leadership team. Hit after hit. Dental work, sponsorship costs, an ATO bill, backdated TAFE reimbursements for the apprentices. All in the same few weeks. Even I find some months scary. $10k in under 30 hours. No bookings in my column when I walked in. How I filled it with online marketing and last-minute clients, and what that told me about my own value. "On the business" is not the goal. Why it's completely fine to love being on the floor, and what your presence actually does for your team's morale. 26 years in, 15 as an owner. What I want the next stretch to look like — and why the salon gives me more than the digital stuff ever has. The $100k profit goal. The extra $100k I'm going for this year, and how I'm using AI to clear the back-office admin so I can build the schedule I actually want. Bringing in a bookkeeper. One day a week, freelance, to handle payroll, TAFE schedules, cash flow and budgets. Because I shouldn't be doing it at 9pm on a Sunday. Mentioned in this episode Fix your margins. If you're still pricing off a structure you built 3 years ago, you're guessing. This is the exact tool I use every time I audit my business → The Profitable Pricing Program The Biz Tool Boutique. Setting Boundaries In Your Salon With Stevie Vincent

Trigger Warning: This episode contains sensitive discussions surrounding mental health, suicide, and emotional trauma. If you or someone you know is struggling or needs support, please contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 (Australia) or reach out to a local crisis support service. As salon owners and stylists, we spend our days listening, supporting, and holding space for everyone else—from the clients sitting in our chairs to the team members relying on us for direction. But what happens when the emotional weight becomes too heavy to carry? We aren't credentialed mental health professionals, yet somehow salon owners and stylists often find themselves on the front lines of mental health crises, burnout, and heavy life trauma. In this episode of the Salon Rebel Podcast, Charlie sits down with Perth salon owner and product founder Stevie Vincent (creator of Vin Hair Care). Stevie shares her journey of expanding from one salon to two, navigating multiple moves, launching her own product line, and her time volunteering on the Lifeline crisis support hotline. Together, they dive deep into an unfiltered conversation about the invisible emotional load of salon leadership, how to know what to do when someone is struggling, setting boundaries behind the chair, and learning how to protect your own mental well-being while running a business. Grab a coffee, hit play, and let’s talk about the heavy stuff we usually keep quiet about. What We Cover in This Episode: The Reality of Salon Mental Load: Why stylists and salon owners end up carrying heavy emotional trauma from clients and team members—and why it leaves us feeling completely drained behind the chair. Credentials vs. Compassion: Recognizing that as leaders, it isn't our job (or within our qualifications) to counsel people through mental health crises, but knowing where to point them for real help. Lessons from Lifeline: Stevie shares insights from answering crisis calls, dealing with heavy mental health topics, and how that shaped her approach to communication and leadership. Setting Boundaries & Self-Preservation: Practical ways to process emotional conversations, protect your personal energy, and step back before you hit complete emotional exhaustion. Growing & Scaling a Salon Brand: Stevie’s story of scaling from one salon to two, moving locations, balancing motherhood, and launching her new product line, Vin Hair Care. 🎙️ About The Salon Rebel Podcast 🎙️ Hosted by Charlie Crothers, is a journey into the heart of entrepreneurial passion and rebellion. Grow Your Team Part 2: Why 16 Is Less Stressful Than 6

🎙️Episode 57: Everyone in the hair and beauty industry tells you that a bigger team means more drama, more management headaches, and more of everything you’re already drowning in. A small team is less drama right? That’s why you’re keeping your team at 3 - 6 people, thinking you’re playing it safe… But let’s be totally real for a second: how safe do you actually feel when you are constantly one staff resignation away from unraveling your entire business? In this week's episode, we are completely busting the myth of the "stress-free small salon." I'm pulling back the curtain on my own journey—from the days I was terrified, running a fragile small team, to building a structured team of 16 that actually gives me more freedom and less stress than I ever had before. If you are tired of running a short-term business model that only functions when absolutely nothing goes wrong, hit play. We’re breaking down the exact thresholds you need to push through to stop being a hostage to your own salon floor and build an actual, resilient asset. What We Cover in This Episode: The Larger Team Myth: Why the size you are terrified of growing into is exactly the one that sets you free—if you structure it correctly from the start. The Fragility Trap: The hidden emotional and operational toll of keeping a small salon team, and why it leaves you completely vulnerable to turnover waves. Building Your Structure Before You Scale: How to map out organizational roles and delegate daily operations so you aren't stuck in "groundhog day" tasks. The Recruitment Pipeline: Why you need to grow your own people and establish a consistent pipeline of applicants instead of relying on pure luck. Running a Business that Works When Things Go Wrong: Moving past short-term panic fixes and stepping into high-level business leadership. What We Cover in This Episode: The "Can We Have a Chat" Trauma: Why leadership anxiety is normal, and how to stop letting the fear of confrontation dictate your business decisions. The "Fragile Salon" Threshold: The dangerous stage of having 3 to 6 staff members, and why pushing past it to a larger team actually decreases your daily stress. Building a Zero-Cost Application Pipeline: How to get 2 to 3 organic job applicants every week without spending a single dollar on expensive recruitment ads. Surviving Turnover Profitably: Shifting your mindset from "pleasing your staff" to creating an operational system where a single employee leaving won't uproot your entire life. 🎙️ About The Salon Rebel Podcast 🎙️ Hosted by Charlie Crothers, is a journey into the heart of entrepreneurial passion and rebellion. Grow Your Team Part 1: A Small Team Isn't The Safest Option

🎙️Episode 56: Let’s be real for a second. Most salon owners stay small not because they lack ambition, but because leadership can feel incredibly daunting. We tell ourselves it’s just easier to handle everything alone, or that finding "good people" is next to impossible these days. But running a tiny, fragile team means you are always living on a knife's edge—where one sudden resignation can feel like your entire business, and your sanity, is about to crash down. In this week's episode, I’m pulling back the curtain on my own journey. I'm sharing why I used to be absolutely terrified of managing people, and how I finally realized that staying small wasn’t actually keeping me safe—it was costing me my peace of mind, my stability, and my profits. If you want to survive staff turnover, protect your hard-earned margins, and finally build a pipeline of applicants who actually want to work with you, grab a warm coffee, hit play, and let’s navigate this together. What We Cover in This Episode: The "Can We Have a Chat" Anxiety: Why that knot in your stomach is completely normal, and how to stop letting the fear of hard conversations run your business. The "Fragile Team" Trap: The awkward phase of having 3 to 6 staff members, and why taking the leap to a larger team is actually where your daily stress finally drops. Attracting Talent Organically: How to build an organic pipeline that brings in 2 to 3 quality applicants every single week, without spending a dime on expensive job boards. Building a Business, Not a House of Cards: How to shift from constantly over-accommodating your team to building operational systems, so that when life happens and staff move on, your whole foundation doesn't shake. Resources & Links Mentioned: Build Your Operational Engine: Stop letting staff turnover dictate your schedule. Comparison Is Holding Your Salon Back

🎙️Episode 55: Are you running yourself into the ground trying to build a business that looks great on Instagram, while privately drowning in day-to-day chaos behind the scenes? Let’s be honest—comparison is the absolute thief of joy in our industry. It is so easy to get completely overwhelmed by scrolling through social media, seeing other "polished" salon owners sitting in pristine offices talking about their massive teams, automated empires, and flawless operations. You watch them and immediately think, “That’s what I need to be doing. What am I doing wrong?” But in this week’s solo episode, we are throwing out the industry rulebook and calling out the comparison trap for what it really is: a fast track to burnout. The reality is that there is more than one way to run a highly successful business. You don't have to follow someone else's highlight reel to build a brand that works for you. It’s time to stop looking at what everyone else is doing as your benchmark, give yourself permission to write your own operational rules, and focus on what actually moves the needle in your own space. Grab a coffee, hit play, and let’s break down the noise together. What We Cover in This Episode: The Social Media Mirage: Why comparing your messy behind-the-scenes to someone else's polished highlight reel is keeping you trapped in an exhausting loop of imposter syndrome. Breaking Free from "Industry Standards": Giving yourself permission to scale a massive brand or happily stay consistent, coast, and just enjoy the ride—and why being happy with what you’ve built is the ultimate business flex. The Trap of the "Nagging Boss": How trying to mimic everyone else's large-scale team structure can leave you feeling like you left one old boss just to work for ten new ones (your staff!). Systemizing Your Reality: How building great systems and processes allows you to step back from the floor, take the emotion out of compliance, and align your salon operations with your actual life goals, not an influencer's timeline. Connect with Me: Systems & Tools: Ready to stop letting outside noise dictate your salon operations? Check out The Biz Tool Boutique. We provide plug-and-play templates, manager checklists, and profit-protecting frameworks designed to help you organize your dream brand without the long-winded coaching fluff. How to Charge More Without Losing Clients — Part 4: You as the Owner

🎙️Episode 54: Look, we need to have a real talk. Me. And you. We've spent the last few episodes breaking down salon pricing strategy, brand positioning, and team dynamics but none of it matters if you're not willing to look at the hard truth. Realising some things need to change in your business and actually implementing it comes down to you, the salon owner. It is scary, and uncomfortable. Trust me, I know. How to Charge More Without Losing Clients — Part 3: Your Team

🎙️Episode 53: Are you terrified of what your team will say when you tell them you’re finally raising your salon prices? Look, it’s one thing to look at your numbers and realize you need to make a massive change to save your business, but it’s a whole different level of scary to bring that information into your next team meeting. You might be worried they'll push back, tell you the clients will leave, or privately blame you for the pressure. In part three of our Profitable Salon Upgrade mini-series, we are pulling back the curtain on the piece of the puzzle that salon owners avoid the most: Your Team. If you are tired of feeling like you're carrying the entire emotional weight of your salon alone, or if you've been secretly letting standard operational expectations slide because you're afraid of confrontation, this episode is a massive reality check. We are talking about true leadership responsibility, why your team will only ever step up as far as you do, and how to execute a major brand and price rollout together without the drama. Grab a coffee, hit play, and let’s stop blaming our staff and start leading them. What We Cover in This Episode: The Team Meeting Trap: Why the absolute last thing you should do is walk into a meeting and dump the responsibility of your business margins onto everybody else. Radical Leadership Accountability: Recognizing where you, as the owner, have let standards slide and taking ownership of it first. Stepping Up to the Plate: Why your staff will never play at a high level if they see you coming into work and slacking off on the same rules. Executing as a Unit: Moving from an isolated, burnt-out boss to a confident leader who brings the team into the brand evolution. 🎙️Episode 52:Why Average Salons Are Going Extinct (And How to Fix Your Client Experience) Are you terrified to raise your prices because you’re scared every single client will walk out the door? Look, with inflation, soaring superannuation, and rent skyrocketing, the reality is stark: average salons are going extinct. Running a "good enough" business isn’t cutting it anymore—your profit margins are being eaten alive, and trying to fix it by simply working an extra 12 hours behind the chair is a fast track to severe salon owner burnout. In part two of our Profitable Salon Upgrade mini-series, we are stripping back the business fluff and talking about the only thing that actually justifies a price increase: the premium client experience. Grab a coffee, hit play, and let's lift your salon experience together. How to Charge More Without Losing Clients — Part 1: Brand Perception

🎙️Episode 51: How to Charge More Without Losing Clients — Part 1: Brand Perception Alright, Rebels. You’ve sat down, put your emotions aside, and finally run the numbers using our pricing program. And if you're anything like most salon owners I work with, the realization probably hit you like a punch in the gut: “Shit. I need to raise my prices way more than I thought just to survive, let alone make a profit.” Then the panic sets in. How the hell am I going to tell my clients? Are they all going to leave me? In this first episode of our brand-new Profitable Salon Upgrade Series, we are tackling that exact fear. Here’s the unfiltered truth: pricing isn't your problem—your brand perception is. If clients are constantly haggling, asking for discounts, or making passive-aggressive comments about your prices, it’s because your salon looks and feels average from the outside. Grab a pen. Today, I’m breaking down exactly how to stop operating like an average local salon and transition into a high-end luxury brand that effortlessly attracts clients who respect your team and happily pay your worth. What We Realise In This Episode: The Pricing Pushback: Why clients complain about your rates (hint: it’s what you’re communicating before they even walk through your door). The Perception Shift: Connect the dots between how your brand is perceived and how much money actually sits in your bank account. Attracting Premium Clients: How to stop chasing cheap clients and start pulling in the ones who value your expertise. The 3 Pillars of Luxury: The exact foundation you need to build a high-end salon brand. Your Digital Storefront: The massive website and Instagram layout mistakes that are quietly tanking your perceived value. Ditching the Stock Photos: Why professional brand photography is a non-negotiable for luxury. Owning Your USP: Using your unique selling proposition to build an experience clients can’t copy. The Micro-Experiences: How everything from your music, your uniforms, and your salon vibes can instantly justify a price hike. Getting the Team Onboard: Why you can't lift your pricing alone, and how to get your team confident, aligned, and lifting the brand with you. ⚡ The Real Truth If you want clients to happily pay premium luxury prices, your business needs to feel premium long before they ever sit in your styling chair. Your brand isn't just a pretty logo—it's every single touchpoint, interaction, and emotion a person experiences when they deal with you. Without profit, you cannot grow. Let's fix it. Resources Mentioned The Salon Pricing Tool: Stop guessing. Use the exact tool I've relied on for years to calculate your targets, understand your margins, and confidently plan your team incentives. How I Broke Free From My Salon

🎙️Episode 50: Are you running yourself into the ground trying to manage your business, only to feel like you’ve accidentally built a job you can't escape? Look, we all started our own businesses because we didn't want to work for somebody else anymore. But without airtight systems, the team you hire ends up running you. Suddenly, you're working for ten bosses instead of one—except these ones don't pay you, you pay them. In this week's episode, Jennifer from Integrity & Values invited me on her podcast to talk all things systems, operations, and leadership. We dive deep into the exact framework it takes to build operational independence, survive sudden staff departures, and put processes in place that protect your sanity. What We Cover in This Episode The "Escape Velocity" of Systems: Why having great processes means you are no longer attached at the hip to your physical location, allowing your business to function even if you move across the world or face a personal crisis. The Trello & Loom System Stack: The exact methodology we used to force a resigning staff member to completely document and video-record every single one of her daily tasks—creating a self-running onboarding system for future hires. The Hard Handover Rule: Why standard notice periods are a trap for core operational roles, and how to structure your employment contracts to ensure a clean, systemized handover before someone walks out the door with your intellectual property. The Automated Daily Checklist: How to implement front-desk management templates so your team stops asking you the same operational questions every single day, taking you out of the "nagging boss" position. The 30% Booking System Rule: How setting up upfront cloud deposits uses a systemized boundary to weed out time-wasters, lower cancellation rates, and keep cash flow predictable without you having to negotiate with clients. Ruthless Delegation vs. Your "Zone of Genius": How to map out the tasks driving your engine, why you should pay someone else to handle tedious tasks like reconciling transactions, and how to only keep the roles that 🎙️ About The Salon Rebel Podcast 🎙️ Hosted by Charlie Crothers, is a journey into the heart of entrepreneurial passion and rebellion.
