Understanding Behaviour, Preventing Violence | Dr Karie Gibson
Recognising concerning behaviour is only the beginning. Understanding what it means, and deciding how to respond, is where prevention starts. In this episode of The Defuse Podcast, Philip Grindell joins Dr Karie Gibson, a psychologist, former FBI special agent and former head of the FBI’s Behavioral Threat Assessment Center, for a conversation about profiling, targeted violence and the practical work of threat management. Drawing on her experience investigating and assessing complex cases, Karie explains what profiling involves, where its limits lie, and how assumptions can lead us to overlook the behaviour that matters. They explore why mental illness alone is a poor guide to understanding violence, how grievances can develop into fixation, and what the pathway to violence can help us recognise. The conversation also covers online threats, the distinction between “hunters and howlers”, and “leakage”, when someone reveals violent thoughts or intent to others. Karie discusses why families, friends and colleagues may notice changes first, and what can stop them from raising concerns. Above all, this is a conversation about acting on an assessment. Karie shares how connection, purpose, practical support and carefully tailored interventions can help move someone away from violence. For anyone concerned about someone’s behaviour, or responsible for protecting others, this episode offers a clearer way to think about the concern and the next step. About Dr Karie Gibson Dr Karie A.
