31: Challenges in Setting Up on Your Own

In this latest edition of the podcast, Prof David Spicer speaks with Chloe Weatherhead, founder of Andiamo Business Assistance, a UK-based service launched in July 2024 to support self-employed individuals, small business owners, and start-ups. Alongside Chloe, we welcome back Dr Nuno Arroteia, Assistant Professor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation.In a far-reaching discussion exploring the implications of working alone, they examine the challenges that come with choosing to become a solo entrepreneur.Their conversation considers the importance of resilience, people skills, and reflection for new entrepreneurs, as well as the need for sole entrepreneurs to build support networks and a sense of community around them. They also discuss the importance of discipline in day-to-day activities to ensure everything gets done while avoiding burnout. Throughout the conversation, they make the case for the value of the solo entrepreneur perspective, arguing that taking control and ownership of your own time and activities can support productivity, creativity, and innovation.Dr Nuno Arroteia is an Assistant Professor at the School of Management. As well as being an academic — with work published in leading journals on entrepreneurship and entrepreneurship education — he is also an entrepreneur in his own right, with extensive industry experience in operations and business development, and is a serial investor.Alongside founding Andiamo Business Assistance, Chloe Weatherhead has extensive experience in operational management and customer experience within the software industry. In addition to running Andiamo and a range of other ventures, she is also the host of Strings To Your Bow, a fortnightly podcast in which she speaks with inspiring entrepreneurs about how their life experiences have shaped their businesses.

Our guests explore the psychology of workforce, empathetic leadership and the impact of AI for leaders amongst much more.The converstion focuses on leadership for SMEs and entrepreneurs but takes a wider view on business as a whole, including the ever shifting current technological and economic climates. Dr George Madine is a podcast regular and Assistant Professor in Leadership and Management at the School of Management. He holds experience in education and industry having setup more than half a dozen of his own businesses and being director for half a dozen more in public and private sectors. He has also been a business consultant and holds particular interest in psychology of the workplace. Martin Hill is a Bradford engineering graduate with an extensive career working in mobile technology and leading digital transformation. His work includes managing the design and development of the first touch-screen interface for smartphones and working on the integration of GPS within smartphones. He's led his own company which manages large-scale software development projects and has acted as a consultant for SMEs and corporates, mentoring and coaching dozens of business leaders over the last 25 years. He has spent over a decade in senior executive roles and holds both an MBA and DBA from the University of Bradford, where his research examined the impact of leadership on safety performance in safety-critical organisations.Dr Olusike Bamisebi is a seasoned business leader and entrepreneur holding experience in power, fintech and technology amongst other sectors. Across her senior finance and business roles she has led business turnarounds, strengthened governance and financial controls and raised debt financing. Her DBA from the University of Bradford examined the role of technology based incubators as policy instruments to advance firm effectiveness in emerging economies for Sustainable Development.Dr Kuttimani Tamilmani is Director of the DBA Programme at the University of Bradford. His research aligns with his role as Associate Professor in Marketing with interests in social media and online consumer behaviour. He held positions in banking and financial services in the Middle East and India before becoming a founding member of award-winning educational start-up flintobox.com. 24: How an MBA can impact on your business

This month Prof. David Spicer hosts a discussion with Dr Nick Snowden and Karl Baz around the impact that an MBA can have on your business. Both Nick and Karl bring fresh perspectives to the conversation as they explore the importance of continuing to educate yourself and adapting to understand the things you know you don't know.The conversation also explores the use of AI in business for good as Karl talks about his start-up, Deep Blue Tech, which recently won Start-up of the Year at the AMBA and BGA Excellence Awards. Deep Blue Tech uses AI for water safety providing lifeguards in Dubai with a drown detection system. Nick is MBA Director at the School of Management. He started his working life as an entrepreneur before progressing to share his time between business interests and education, teaching at several universities and colleges, in a range of contexts, while studying part-time for both an MBA and PhD. Having worked with a wide range of organisations in the public, private ad voluntary sectors his work focuses on providing leadership and management development for senior leaders in a global context. Karl is currently in the second year of his MBA at the University of Bradford and recently won 2025 Start-Up of the year at the AMBA and BGA Excellence awards for his co-founded company Deep Blue Tech. The AI drown detection system represents a groundbreaking leap in water safety technology, providing real-time monitoring and rapid response capabilities in various aquatic environments. The podcast explores a range of topics but focuses on the importance of putting Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity at the forefront of business practice and making information accessible for all.Boakye and Joanna both explore the importance of accessibility in business, not just for customers but also in the work place. The conversation delves into the resources and steps that can be taken to achieve the small successes in building to an accessible work place for SMEs whilst also emphasising the importance of speaking to the experts - those with accessibility requirements.Boakye is a lecturer in International Business Management and programme leader of the BSc International Business and Management programme at Bradford. His research interests include exploring effects of project risk management on project success, international business expansion and adaptiveness, human resource management, stakeholder influence and sustainable development.Joanna is Chief Officer at Bradford Talking Media (BTM), a non-profit focused on the provision of accessible information, particularly to those who find ordinary print difficult to read. To support this and to increase the accessibility of information they recruit and support a range of work groups who create information they and their peers can understand and have teams of people with learning difficulties, mental health service users, deaf people and people with visual impairment as part of their team.

22: Effective Communication

2025 commences with Prof. David Spicer hosting Dr George Madine and Stephen Peacock to discuss effective communication practices in business. The podcast focuses on the importance of open and honest communication within companies and how senior management can support the implementation of good practice.George and Stephen both draw on years of experience in business and consultancy to explain how training, psychology and the correct methods of communication can impact a business. Both explain the role of line managers in the process and the importance of ensuring  staff feel valued and informed in the long term success of a company whether it be a large organisation or SME.George joins the podcast for the third time as Assistant Professor in Leadership and Management here at the School of Management. Having set up multiple businesses himself and been director of half a dozen more in both public and private sectors he has years of industry experience to build on. He has also been a business consultant and has particular interest in the psychology of the workplace.Stephen has 37 years of experience working in the power industry across various roles engaging with people at all levels across organisations. His experience was often challenging but hs been the basis of his learning for effective commnication in diverse settings. In 2020 he launched his own coaching business allowing him to share his experience with others with a particular interest on effective communication in both business and personal settings.
