What's the one money lesson you'd give your 30-year-old self? We asked the Queer Money community that question, expecting the usual financial advice: start investing early, avoid credit card debt, save more and stop buying things you don't need. We got all that. But one gay man in his 60s shared something that stopped us in our tracks. Many gay men of his generation never saved for retirement because, during the AIDS crisis, they never expected to live long enough to need one. Imagine making financial decisions when you don't believe you'll have a future. That perspective changes everything. In this episode of Queer Money®, we're combining the hard-earned financial wisdom of our LGBTQ+ community with lessons from our own journey from $51,000 in credit card debt to retiring early in our 50s . And yes, some of the advice is a little cheeky. Apparently, free drinks aren't free, bad boyfriends can be expensive and you can earn six figures while still being broke in fancier underwear. 🌈 10 money lessons worth learning sooner 1. Plan for future you. Even when tomorrow feels uncertain, make financial decisions as though you'll be around to enjoy it. 2. Save for tomorrow, but live today. Don't make retirement the reward for surviving 40 years of misery. 3. Start investing early. At a hypothetical 7% annual return, investing $300 monthly from age 30 to 65 could grow to approximately $540,000. Waiting until 50 makes catching up considerably harder. 4. Invest your raises. Before lifestyle inflation claims your next pay increase, redirect some of it toward your financial independence. 5. Eliminate high-interest debt. Credit card points are fabulous. Paying 20% or more in interest? Not so much. 6. Stop buying approval. You don't need new things to be fabulous, especially when you're financing a lifestyle designed to impress other people. 7. Choose financially compatible partners. Love is wonderful, but conflicting attitudes about debt, spending and retirement can become expensive. 8. Build financial options. Emergency savings, investments and insurance give you the freedom to leave situations that no longer serve you. 9. Rethink where you live. Your ZIP code can affect your financial independence more than your daily latte. 10. Retire TO something. A seven-figure portfolio can fund your retirement, but it can't give your life purpose. In our second full year of retirement, David's healthcare alone will cost us more than $20,000. Income we expected to keep earning in semi-retirement practically disappeared. And all that glorious free time? Turns out Netflix is perfectly willing to help you waste your retirement. How thoughtful of them. Even after running our retirement numbers repeatedly and proving to ourselves that we have enough, there's still occasionally that annoying little voice asking: “But what if we got it wrong?” In this episode of Queer Money®, we're getting personal about 7 things that surprised us after retiring early , what actually happened and what we're doing differently now. 🌈 7 things we got wrong: 🏥 Healthcare isn't just a money problem. You can afford the trip and still not feel well enough to take it. 🌉 Semi-retirement income isn't guaranteed. We're currently in Ajijic, Mexico, extending our Mexican residency from one year to three years and seriously considering spending the first four months of our move to Mexico right here. So we're asking: Is Ajijic retirement hot? In this episode of Queer Money®, we're sharing 5 reasons Ajijic has become one of the most interesting retirement destinations in Mexico for us, plus 3 reasons it might make you say absolutely not. And we're doing it from Ajijic based on what we're actually experiencing. 🌈 Why Ajijic has our attention: 🏳️‍🌈 It's surprisingly gay. Ajijic has an active LGBTQ+ community that feels less focused on nightlife and more focused on building friendships and community. It's an easy soft landing in Mexico. A large immigrant community, English-speaking services and established infrastructure can make moving abroad considerably easier. 🏥 Healthcare is accessible. Ajijic has local hospitals, specialists, labs and dental care, with even more options available nearby and in Guadalajara. 💰 Our money goes further. Ajijic isn't bargain-basement cheap anymore, but compared with many places in the U.S., everyday expenses can still feel considerably more reasonable. 🌴 It's retirement hot, not necessarily vacation hot. Puerto Vallarta may win for beaches, nightlife and vacation energy. Ajijic may win for community, everyday living and building an actual life. But Ajijic isn't retirement paradise for everyone. Those charming cobblestone streets can become a serious mobility issue. The large immigrant population can make it easy to stay inside an English-speaking bubble.
