How to Get a Business Podcast Started in Five Steps

Most business podcasts do not fail because the host is not good. They fail because the host tried to do it all alone. Everyone tells you to start a podcast. Almost nobody tells you the order to do it in. There is one step that decides whether you will still be recording in six months, and it is the step most hosts skip. This episode walks the whole thing in five steps, from the strategy that comes before you touch a microphone, to the promotion that turns one conversation into a month of content. There is a workbook to follow along. The question before the microphone - and why getting it wrong is the fastest way to run out of steam. The 15-second decision - why the music you are tempted to use is the exact reason your show sounds like everyone else's. The budget trap - the one thing to spend on first, and the expensive habit that makes almost no difference. The three-week edit - the number that quietly ends most podcasts, and the fix most hosts resist. The six-episode buffer - why the shows that survive are not the best ones, they are the ones that planned for a bad week. The guest trap - how adding a guest can demote you from expert to interviewer, and the one move that prevents it. The compounding effect - why one episode is worth almost nothing and fifty are worth everything. From the episode "If you are going to spend some money, spend it on getting the sound right first." "Plenty of people try and do it themselves, but the majority of them fail, and the majority of them fail because it is exhausting." ** DOWNLOAD THE WORKBOOK from this episode and every episode of the Podcasts Done for You Show** https://link.podcastsdoneforyou.com.au/workbooks Workbook: There is a workbook that goes with this episode, with the five steps and the actions under each one. Real Influence: Jessica Brown, Warrior Woman Foundation

What does real influence look like? Forget follower counts. In this episode, recorded ahead of The Influencers 2026, Anthony Perl sits down with Jessica Brown, the founder of the Warrior Woman Foundation. Jessica spent a decade as a high school teacher in South Western Sydney and three decades advocating for children in the protection system before she started the Foundation. Her whole model rests on one idea: a young woman leaving the out-of-home care system needs one safe adult who will not give up on her. She calls the work believing in someone, and the results are extraordinary. Key talking points Why she started with teaching, then seventeen years running the Sister2sister charity, then the Warrior Woman Foundation, and what she learned at each step The odds these young women are up against: two-thirds of the youth homeless population come from the out-of-home care system, and one in two will be homeless, unemployed, incarcerated or a first-time parent within a year of leaving it The three pillars of the Young Warrior Woman Program, built on self-determination theory: connection to a safe community, life skills education, and mental health support Why the first question a young woman asks her mentor is often "why are you being so nice to me?", and what it takes to earn that trust The mentor who started as a bank teller, became a primary school principal, and joined the army at fifty: proof that you can pivot your career at any age Why the true empowerment comes when a young woman makes her own decisions, and why mentors are taught to hold back rather than fix The difference between telling people what to do and real influence, and why people can spot an inauthentic voice straight away Why she says "be kind, always", and what one safe adult can do for a young woman the system has let down About Jessica Brown Jessica Brown is the founder and chief executive of the Warrior Woman Foundation, which she started in 2020. Before that she spent ten years as a high school teacher in South Western Sydney and three decades advocating for children in the protection system, including founding and running the Life Changing Experiences Foundation and its Sister2sister program for seventeen years. The Warrior Woman Foundation runs the Young Warrior Woman Program, a six-month mentoring and life skills program for vulnerable young Australian women, with a particular focus on young women leaving the out-of-home care system. Since 2020 it has supported more than 1,275 young women, and its mentors have contributed over a million dollars' worth of in-kind hours. Jessica's awards include Pride of Australia, an Australian of the Year nomination, and the NSW Woman of the Year People's Choice in 2013. The Warrior Woman Foundation is the charity partner of The Influencers 2026. The Influencers 2026 The Influencers 2026 is one morning in Sydney: Wednesday 7 October 2026, 8.30am to 12.00pm, Northside Conference Centre, Crows Nest. Why AI Projects Fail: David Clelland, OmniPulse AI

What does real influence look like? Forget follower counts. In this episode, recorded ahead of The Influencers 2026, Anthony Perl sits down with David Clelland, senior partner and co-founder of the AI strategy business OmniPulse AI. David calls himself a treasure hunter, not an AI strategist: he goes looking for where the gold is hiding in a business. The problem, he says, is that most businesses go looking in the wrong place. They buy the tools, skip the strategy, and end up with what he calls the AI graveyard. Key talking points Why he is a treasure hunter, not an AI strategist: finding where the gold is in a business, not fitting tools into it Why so many AI projects fail, and why the failure is almost always upstream of the technology: no measurement before the work starts Why the problem the executives name is rarely the problem on the floor, and why the answer usually comes from the people doing the work The 15-minute task done twenty times a day beats the shiny one nobody touches: how to prioritise by time and frequency Personal AI and corporate AI are two different things, and why the distinction matters for a mid-sized business Why fixing one process just moves the bottleneck further on, and why that is a feature, not a bug It is a journey, not a point in time: starting with the business side, not the tools The promise that puts the risk on his own shoulders: six figures of hidden revenue, or he keeps working for free About David Clelland David Clelland is the senior partner and co-founder of OmniPulse AI, the Sydney AI strategy business. He spent 35 years building businesses that scale, long before AI was a headline, and the one he is proudest of took 14 years to build: a software business across Australia and New Zealand acquired outright by the Danish company Zensai in 2022. He holds an AI Strategy for Business Transformation certificate from Kellogg Executive Education, and he writes about AI accountability and governance in his newsletter, The Pulse. OmniPulse AI works with mid-sized businesses on a flat fee and a four week engagement, and guarantees to identify six figures of hidden revenue, or keep working for free until it does. OmniPulse AI is a Proudly Supported By sponsor of The Influencers 2026. How to Sell Without Being Salesy: Sell Mates Founders

What if the thing holding your business back is not your product, but the conversation you keep avoiding? In this episode, recorded ahead of The Influencers 2026, Anthony Perl sits down with Aaron Smith and Andrew Cominos, the two sales operators behind the new membership Sell Mates. They call themselves your professional idiots, and they are on a mission to change how business owners feel about selling. Their definition is refreshingly simple: sales is a conversation with a pathway and an outcome. The problem, they say, is not that people cannot sell. It is that nobody wants to be a salesperson. Key talking points Why they describe themselves as your professional idiots, and why that honesty is the whole brand Sales as a conversation with a pathway and an outcome, and why people fear being a salesperson more than they fear selling The $5,000 day problem: paying to sit in a room and spending half of it being upsold to the next package The Sell Mates promise: no pitch, no upsell, and a doing session rather than a talk about doing session Go get a duck: why action beats waiting for every duck to line up in a row Consistency over epic: fixing the feast and famine cycle instead of chasing the million dollar month Why 96% of small businesses fail in their first ten years, and what that says about who is advising them Business can be lonely and sales can be hard, and why community is the fix for both About Aaron Smith and Andrew Cominos Aaron Smith and Andrew Cominos are the founders of Sell Mates, a new membership built for business owners who are good at what they do but winging the selling. Aaron is the founder of Morphability, a growth consultancy, and he has spent decades leading sales for technology businesses across Australia and New Zealand. Andrew is the founder of Project Remarkable, a men's performance coaching practice, and he learned sales the hard way, knocking on strangers' doors before training around 500 staff at Godfreys and then building his own sales business. They met at an event and spent two hours talking, and they have been building together ever since. Sell Mates is a sponsor of The Influencers 2026, and their founding event runs in Sydney on Tuesday 1 December 2026. How to Build a Standout Personal Brand: Kirryn Zerna

What does real influence look like? Forget follower counts. In this episode, recorded ahead of The Influencers 2026, Anthony Perl sits down with keynote speaker and author Kirryn Zerna, who co-created the event with Russell Pearson. Real influence, Kirryn argues, is perception: the stories people tell about you and the experience they have of you. And it is built or broken by micro behaviours. Key talking points Why influence is perception, not follower counts: the stories people create about you and the experience they have of you The Connect Effect: Kirryn's framework of trust, tribe and thrive, and the invisible human dynamics that make or break connection Does the intention meet the perception? What your micro behaviours say about you in meetings, pitches and interviews Why it is extremely difficult to read your label when you are inside the jar, and how a coach or an external audit helps The boardroom story: a rejected pitch redone with nothing changed but stillness, a dropped voice, slower speech and pauses, and it got approved How The Influencers 2026 was born in the 2020 lockdowns, and why Kirryn wraps the morning with practical micro behaviours for the room About Kirryn Zerna Kirryn Zerna is a keynote speaker, author and advisor on connection driven leadership, sales and teams. A Certified Speaking Professional and LinkedIn Top Voice in Communications, she spent fifteen years in corporate communications advising senior leaders, including at Westpac and the NSW Small Business Commissioner, before founding her own practice. Influence Is Access, Not Followers: Russell Pearson

What does real influence look like? Forget follower counts. In this episode, recorded ahead of The Influencers 2026, Anthony Perl sits down with business strategist Russell Pearson, co-creator of the event. Real influence, Russell argues, is access: walking into a room and having everyone turn around, waiting for you to speak. It is being the person people think about when you are not there. Key talking points Why influence is access, not followers, and what that means for the way you show up How to position yourself in the minds of the people you want to work with, so you become the obvious choice The relationship between influence and leadership: you do not have to be a leader to be influential, but you need influence to lead Why everything is trying to influence you right now, from advertising to social media to artificial intelligence, and how to stay in control Where Russell's competitive streak came from: five boys under the age of seven in Somerville Inside The Influencers 2026: run three times, the first time in person, and why it is not a sales event About Russell Pearson Russell Pearson is an award-winning business strategist and Hall of Fame speaker. Across three decades, his strategies have shaped growth in more than 280 industries and been applied by leaders in 63 countries. The Podcast Boom Is Real: 10 Reasons You Are Behind

The podcast boom is absolutely real, and in this episode Anthony Perl breaks down 10 compelling reasons why business owners are falling behind by not having a podcast. From differentiating yourself in an AI-saturated market to tapping into 1.5 billion monthly listeners, this episode makes the case that podcasting is no longer optional for businesses that want to build authority, relationships, and a cascading content engine. Starting with the fundamental shift that AI has created in written content, Anthony explains why your authentic voice is now your greatest differentiator. He covers how a podcast elevates your expertise, builds gravitas through media perception, and creates relationship-building opportunities at scale. He also tackles the discoverability advantage of podcast episodes on YouTube and Google, the shareability factor in networking situations, and the enormous value a podcast provides to existing clients. The episode culminates in what Anthony calls the most important reason: podcasting is more than just podcasting. It is a system with a cascading effect that turns your authentic voice into a myriad of content pieces across every platform and format imaginable, from social media to newsletters to training programs and books. If you have been wondering whether the podcast boom is real, this episode settles it definitively. Key talking points AI versus authority and authentic differentiation Elevating expertise without needing credentials Stories and insights as the currency of connection Media perception and the gravitas of being in media Relationship building at scale Attracting new opportunities through discoverable content Shareability in networking and everyday conversations Value for existing clients and their teams The 1.5 billion monthly listener opportunity The cascading effect of podcast content ** DOWNLOAD THE WORKBOOK from this episode and every episode of the Podcasts Done for You Show** https://link.podcastsdoneforyou.com.au/workbooks Podcasts Done For You Show Your business podcast, done for you. The Dumb Question: Your Podcast's Secret Weapon

Anthony Perl makes the case that the so-called dumb question is the single most undervalued tool in podcast planning. The premise is simple but routinely ignored: your audience tunes in because they do not know what you know. The moment you assume they do, you lose them. This episode unpacks what a dumb question actually is (and is not), why acronyms are the number one trap for losing listeners, and why you cannot ask the dumb questions of yourself without sounding ego-driven. Anthony shares a story about sitting in a management meeting with 40 people where the acronyms flew so fast he could not keep up, and another about a podcaster whose guests all got clients from appearing on his show while he got zero, because he positioned them as the experts instead of himself. The takeaway is a practical one: have a co-host ask the dumb questions, write down your top 20, and watch them become episode gold. Anthony has been in the broadcast media game for 35-plus years. He hosts the Podcasts Done For You Show to help business owners build authority through podcasting without doing all the work themselves. ** DOWNLOAD THE WORKBOOK from this episode and every episode of the Podcasts Done for You Show** https://link.podcastsdoneforyou.com.au/workbooks Podcasts Done For You Show Your business podcast, done for you.
