Leadership Story Talks | Finding the Meaning of Life Through Adventure with John Graham

“What I discovered—and what a lot of these Giraffe Heroes have discovered—is that the one true stable meaning for life is service. It’s giving back.” — John Graham Overview In this episode of Leadership Story Talks, Jerome Deroy and Julienne Ryan sit down with John Graham, author, international peacemaker, and Director of the Giraffe Heroes Project, for an extraordinary conversation about courage, purpose, and service. John’s early life reads like an adventure novel. As a teenager, he worked aboard a cargo ship traveling to the Far East. He hitchhiked through the revolution in Algeria, helped make the first direct ascent of the North Wall of Mount McKinley, and later served as a U.S. Foreign Service officer during the Vietnam War. But beneath his appetite for danger was a deeper search: to understand what it meant to be strong and what would ultimately give his life meaning. John shares the turning points that transformed that search—from a moment of reckoning during the war in Vietnam, to discovering that the same toughness and determination he had once directed toward adventure could instead be put to work for peace and justice. At the United Nations, that realization led him to challenge his own government and help build international pressure against apartheid in South Africa. Then came another life-changing moment: surviving a cruise ship fire and a typhoon in the North Pacific. Convinced he was about to die from hypothermia, John confronted the question of whether he was truly living according to the purpose he had discovered. His survival became a promise to himself to devote the rest of his life to service. That promise ultimately led him to Anne Medlock and the Giraffe Heroes Project, which for more than four decades has shared the stories of people who “stick their necks out” to make a difference. It’s a conversation about redefining courage—not simply as taking risks, but as using who you are and what you know in service of something larger than yourself. You’ll Hear - How being bullied as a young person shaped John’s early ideas about masculinity, toughness, and courage. - Why risk and adventure became John’s first answer to the question of what makes life meaningful. - The experience in Vietnam that forced him to confront how shallow his pursuit of adrenaline had become. - How John began to recognize that toughness and compassion didn’t have to be opposites. - How his work at the United Nations taught him that his skills could be used for peace and justice rather than war. - The unlikely relationships John built across political and ideological divides—and why listening, conversation, and trust mattered. - The remarkable story of how an informal conversation with Cuban diplomats nearly created a pathway to freeing the American hostages in Iran. - How surviving a burning cruise ship and a typhoon became the third major turning point in John’s life. - Why stories of ordinary people taking courageous action became the foundation of the Giraffe Heroes Project. - What more than four decades of collecting stories of people creating change have taught John about hope. - Why John believes service is one of the most enduring ways to find meaning—and why service doesn’t require abandoning your career or radically changing your life. - How each of us can begin by asking what we’re good at, what needs fixing, and where those two things might meet. Resources John Graham John is the Director of Giraffe Heroes International and the author of several books exploring courage, purpose, service, and creating change, including: - Quest: Risk, Adventure, and Searching for the Meaning of Life - Sit Down, Young Stranger: A Memoir - Stick Your Neck Out: A Street-Smart Guide to Creating Change in Your Community and Beyond Giraffe Heroes Project Founded by Anne Medlock, the Giraffe Heroes Project finds and tells the stories of people who “stick their necks out” for the common good. Over more than four decades, the organization has shared the stories of more than 2,000 “Giraffe Heroes” to inspire others to take meaningful action in their own communities. Badass Grandad John also shares short-form videos under the name Badass Grandad , combining stories from his remarkable life with practical lessons and calls to action. Leadership Story Talks | Jerome & Julienne Discuss Challenged Values

“Go back to your own experiences, your own stories, and see where your values were reinforced, where they were challenged, and what happened.” — Jerome Deroy In this debrief episode of Leadership Story Talks, Jerome Deroy and Julienne Ryan reflect on their conversation with Giovanna Rossi and explore what happens when the demands of everyday life begin to pull us away from what matters most. They dig into Giovanna’s observations about burnout, competing priorities, and the disconnect that can emerge when our actions no longer align with our values. As Julienne points out, this can be especially visible at pivotal moments in life, when professional responsibilities intersect with caring for children, aging parents, relationships, and our own needs. Jerome and Julienne also explore why values can feel abstract until they are tested. It’s easy to say that we value family, integrity, trust, or wellbeing when things are going smoothly. The harder—and perhaps more revealing—question is what happens when circumstances put those values under pressure. Jerome suggests looking back at specific experiences when a value was reinforced or challenged to better understand what it actually means to us. The conversation turns to the stories and expectations we carry with us: assumptions about what success should look like, the pressure to “do it all,” and what Julienne calls the “press release” version of our lives—the polished story that leaves out what it really takes to make everything work. Challenging those scripts can help us recognize when we're living according to someone else’s expectations rather than our own values. Ultimately, Jerome and Julienne make the case for using our own stories as a tool for self-awareness. By examining moments of overwhelm, conflict, or burnout with curiosity, we can begin to understand not only what happened to us, but the choices and patterns that contributed to it—and where we might want to course correct. You’ll Hear - Why other people’s urgent priorities can gradually overwhelm our own - What happens when our actions and values fall out of alignment - How pivotal experiences can reveal what our values actually mean - Why stories are essential to understanding people’s experiences before creating policies or organizational change - How cultural scripts around success, perfection, and “doing it all” shape our choices - Julienne’s idea of the “Greek chorus” we carry with us—and why some of those voices may need to be sent offstage - How reflecting on moments of burnout can reveal patterns, assumptions, and choices - Why transparency about what we’re experiencing can create connection and remind others that they’re not alone Resources Listen to the full conversation with Giovanna Rossi for more on her work around women, families, workplace policies, reclaiming time, and creating lives that better reflect what matters to us. Leadership Story Talks | World Travel Makes the World a Better Place with Joe Diaz

"99.5% of this world is here to help you." — Joe Diaz What if travel wasn't primarily about seeing new places—but about becoming a different person? In this episode of Leadership Story Talks, Jerome Deroy and Julienne Ryan welcome Joe Diaz, co-founder of Afar Media, the award-winning B Corp built on the belief that travel can make the world a better place. Joe shares the deeply personal story that shaped his life: at 21 years old, overcoming years of fear to move alone to Spain, reconnect with his heritage, and discover that stepping outside his comfort zone transformed far more than he ever expected. The conversation explores why curiosity is a leadership skill, how authentic travel creates empathy instead of consumption, why imperfect experiences often become the most meaningful stories, and how learning to trust strangers may be one of the greatest acts of courage in today's world. Whether you're a frequent traveler or rarely leave home, this episode offers a powerful reminder that the journey toward understanding others almost always begins by becoming willing to change ourselves. You'll Hear: - How one spontaneous decision at age 21 completely changed Joe's life—and ultimately led to the creation of Afar Media. - Why curiosity, openness, and discomfort are essential ingredients for personal growth. - The difference between consuming a destination and genuinely connecting with the people who live there. - Why the most memorable travel experiences are rarely the perfectly planned ones. - How travel can strengthen empathy, reduce fear, and help us see our common humanity. - Why giving young people opportunities to experience the world can transform communities for generations. - The connection between storytelling and meaningful travel—and why both help us understand ourselves as much as others. - Joe's unforgettable lesson from a blind travel writer: "The first thing I do is look for the first elbow to grab." - Why Joe believes that despite what we often see in the news, "99.5% of this world is here to help you." Leadership Story Talks | Jerome & Julienne Discuss The Lessons Hidden Inside Our Stories

" We've all experienced adversity or challenges. We've all experienced someone who lifted us up. And we've all experienced moments where we look back and realize we've become someone because of it." — Jerome Deroy Episode Overview What do three completely different stories have in common? In this special debrief episode, Jerome Deroy and Julienne Ryan reflect on the powerful patterns that emerged from the latest Stories That Shaped Us Live event featuring Jennifer Langton, George Pesansky, and Katherine Carol. Although each storyteller came from a different background and faced very different circumstances, their stories revealed a remarkably similar structure: adversity, someone who made a difference, and a transformed sense of purpose. Jerome and Julienne explore why these recurring patterns matter—not just in storytelling, but in leadership and in how we make meaning of our own lives. They also discuss the unique energy that comes from telling stories live, why familiar stories continue to reveal new insights, and how looking at our own experiences through a storytelling lens can help us better understand who we've become. You'll Hear: - Why powerful stories often follow the same human pattern—even when the circumstances couldn't be more different. - The role adversity plays in shaping identity and purpose. - How mentors, advocates, and unexpected supporters often become the turning point in our stories. - Why telling a story live creates a different kind of connection than rehearsal ever can. - How the same story can continue to teach us new lessons over time. - A simple framework you can use to reflect on your own defining life experiences. - Why adding more humanity and narrative to everyday communication changes how people receive your message. Leadership Story Talks | Jerome & Julienne Discuss Summer Intentions

"Why not be intentional about what we want to be doing and thinking this summer, so we return from it feeling inspired?" For this special summer episode of Leadership Story Talks , Jerome Deroy and Julienne Ryan step away from interviewing guests and instead reflect on the season itself. While many of us reserve reflection for the end or beginning of the year, Jerome and Julienne make the case that summer offers its own unique opportunity to pause, recharge, and be intentional about how we spend our time. Through personal stories, favorite books, and reflections on travel, family, and belonging, they explore how the experiences we choose—and the stories we revisit—can shape the person we become when summer comes to an end. It also offers a curated list of books that have influenced their thinking about leadership, listening, communication, and personal growth. You'll Hear Why summer can be one of the best times of the year for reflection and renewal. How taking time off intentionally can leave you feeling inspired instead of dreading the return to work. Jerome's memories of family summers in France and why shared experiences matter more than busy schedules. Julienne's powerful Fourth of July story—and how an unexpected act of hospitality transformed an early childhood memory. Why the stories everyone has lived become meaningful when we tell them through our own unique experience. Leadership Story Talks | Jerome & Julienne Discuss Wonder

"What is that word for you?" In this debrief episode, Jerome and Julienne reflect on their conversation with Bryce Kennedy, exploring a theme that extends far beyond space exploration: the role of wonder in helping us discover purpose, inspire others, and navigate career change. Bryce's story is a reminder that meaningful careers are rarely linear. You'll Hear - Why Bryce's story is especially relevant for anyone navigating a career transition. - How a 90% failure rate can still lead you exactly where you're meant to be. - Why "wonder" became the emotional thread that helped Bryce enroll others in his vision. - The difference between knowing your purpose yourself and helping others understand it. - How identifying a single word or sentence can unlock authentic stories that resonate. - Why experimenting, sharing your stories, and paying attention to people's responses helps refine your message. - How honoring what genuinely matters to you builds trust and creates stronger connections. Leadership Story Talks | One Hour, No Agenda: The Power of Honest Conversation with Martin Koehler

"You don't have to be something in order to be worth something." What happens when you remove the agenda, the sales pitch, and the pressure to have all the answers—and simply make space for a meaningful conversation? In this episode of Leadership Story Talks , we sit down with Martin Koehler , founder of Over a Cup of Coffee , an initiative built on a deceptively simple idea: one hour, one conversation, no program, no strings attached. After a 25-year international corporate career came to an unexpected end, Martin found himself asking a different question—not "What's next?" but "How can I be useful?" That question led to a series of conversations that ultimately became a new way of helping leaders, entrepreneurs, and professionals find clarity through curiosity. Together, we explore why the most important question is often not the one we think we're asking, how curiosity creates trust, and why success isn't always about becoming more—sometimes it's about recognizing that what you already have is enough. If you've ever wrestled with career transitions, identity, ambition, or simply the desire to have more meaningful conversations, this episode offers a thoughtful reminder that listening may be one of the most powerful leadership skills we have. You'll Hear Why losing his executive role ultimately led Martin to discover his life's next chapter. The origin story behind Over a Cup of Coffee and why one conversation changed everything. Why having "no stake in the outcome" creates a uniquely powerful space for honest dialogue. How curiosity helps uncover the real issue hiding beneath the problem people think they have. Why bigger isn't always better—and how social expectations often pull us away from what actually fulfills us. The importance of acknowledging people beyond their titles, roles, and achievements. How replacing "or" with "and" can transform the way we think about identity, success, and possibility. Why authenticity sometimes requires asking difficult questions—and why clarity is often the greatest gift we can offer someone. Martin's simple advice for navigating today's increasingly divided world: be kind and stay curious. Leadership Story Talks | Jerome & Julienne Discuss Dropping Cover

“He didn’t say a word. He just stood up and hugged me.” For our 200th episode of Leadership Story Talks, we reflect on one of the most powerful moments from our conversation with Kenny Leahman — a former CIA operative, executive coach, and leadership consultant whose life story is filled with unexpected turns. The story we chose to explore centers on a moment of profound vulnerability. After years of hiding a core part of himself, Kenny made the decision to “drop cover” and come out to a former boss and mentor — a decorated Marine whose reaction Kenny feared and could not predict. Instead of judgment, criticism, or rejection, he was met with something much simpler and much more powerful: a hug. In this debrief, we explore the assumptions we carry into difficult conversations, the courage it takes to align our actions with our values, and how often our fears about how others will respond turn out to be wrong. Kenny’s story reminds us that some of the most significant leadership moments happen not through speeches or strategies, but through empathy, presence, and trust. We also discuss the remarkable way Kenny translated lessons learned in intelligence work—listening, cultural awareness, relationship-building, and trust—into his work as a coach and leadership advisor. His story offers a powerful reminder that the skills required to build trust in high-stakes environments are often the very same skills that help leaders succeed in boardrooms, classrooms, and organizations. Most of all, this conversation invites us to reflect on the moments in our own lives when someone showed up for us in exactly the way we needed—and how those seemingly small moments can shape the course of our lives for years to come. You'll Hear: - Why Kenny’s decision to “drop cover” became a defining moment in his life - How assumptions and fears can distort our expectations of others - What it means to bring your actions back into alignment with your values - The leadership lesson hidden inside a simple hug - Why trust is built through presence, empathy, and consistency - How Kenny carried lessons from intelligence work into executive coaching - The surprising connections between leadership, listening, and human connection - A reflection on the people who showed up for us when it mattered most Resources: - Kenny Leahman Interview: A Life Uncovered with Kenny Leahman Experience The Listening Lab Looking for greater clarity around your own story and purpose? Leadership Story Talks | Hidden Patterns That Shape How We Lead Under Pressure with Logan Yonavjak

“People are always judging you and making assessments of you. Wouldn’t you like to know a better proxy of what most people are thinking rather than just walk around not knowing?” — Logan Yonavjak In this episode of Leadership Story Talks, we sit down with entrepreneur, impact investor, and Founder Readiness Institute CEO Logan Yonavjak for a fascinating conversation about leadership capacity, human development, and the hidden patterns that shape how we lead under pressure. Drawing from her background in impact investing, psychology, and leadership assessment, Logan shares how a pivotal moment in high school — and an unexpected question from a mentor — helped shape the trajectory of her life and career. From wilderness leadership experiences in the Southwest to building AI-powered tools that analyze leadership readiness, this conversation explores what it really means to grow as a leader in increasingly complex environments. Together, we discuss why self-awareness is often missing in professional development, what organizations overlook when promoting leaders, and how AI might help us better understand not just what people say — but what they leave unsaid. You’ll Hear: How a single question from a mentor changed Logan’s life direction Why leadership breakdowns often happen under pressure and complexity The concept of “capacity” vs. credentials in leadership How AI can identify patterns — and even “negative space” — in communication Why many organizations struggle to support leaders as they grow The role of Jungian psychology and adult developmental theory in leadership assessment How self-awareness and coachability impact long-term success Why storytelling, listening, and leadership development are deeply connected The difference between personality assessments and measuring developmental capacity Logan’s vision for using AI to support more conscious and effective leadership Resources & Links: Founder Readiness Institute Founder Readiness Institute YouTube Channel Experience The Listening Lab Looking for greater clarity around your own story and purpose?
