546: What Your Dentist Isn't Testing (And Why It Could Be Making You Sick) with Dr. Elmira Shojai and Lora Hooper

🦷Special offer for you on your own oral testing kit: https://get.theurbanmonk.com/oral#why-it-matters Did you know you swallow about six cups of your own saliva every single day, and that saliva could be quietly feeding disease throughout your entire body? In this episode, I sit down with Dr. Elmira Shojai and Lora Hooper, two women working at the cutting edge of something almost nobody in traditional dentistry ever talks about: your oral microbiome. I did a consult with them on my own mouth, and even though I feel amazing and have done so much work to clean up my health, my results shocked me. We go deep on why the mouth is the second largest microbiome in your body, why traditional dentistry cleans and fills without ever asking why the problem keeps coming back, and why killing every bit of bacteria with harsh mouthwash might actually be making things worse instead of better. If you've done everything right and still feel like your body is working against you, this conversation might hold the missing piece. We Go Deep On: Why the oral microbiome is the second largest microbiome in the body, and why almost nobody tests it How swallowing your own saliva can reinfect your gut with harmful bacteria Why traditional dentistry fixes symptoms but ignores root cause The real reason killing 99.9% of bacteria in your mouth can backfire The three primary ways oral dysbiosis develops (imprinting, over-sterilizing, mouth breathing) The truth about root canals, and what actually determines if one becomes a problem Natalie's own root canal story and what her MPO bloodwork revealed The overlooked connection between oral bacteria and leaky gut Why plaque in the mouth can show up as plaque in the heart, brain, or joints What real testing and treatment for oral dysbiosis actually looks like, and why antibiotics alone don't work Catch the full episode on YOUTUBE HERE: https://bit.ly/MidlifeConversationsYouTube Learn More About Elmira Shojai and Lora Hooper Instagram ➜ https://www.instagram.com/lorahooper17 and https://www.instagram.com/egederi Website ➜ https://get.theurbanmonk.com/oral#why-it-matters Thank you to our show sponsors: TIMELINE:Timeline is offering 20% off your order! 545: GLP-1s, Protein, and the Truth About "Toning": A No-BS Fitness Q&A with Dr. Stephanie Estima

What if everything you've been told about "lifting heavy" is actually setting you up to get hurt instead of getting stronger? I sit down with Dr. Stephanie Estima, doctor of chiropractic, female metabolism expert, and creator of the Betty Body Method, to pull apart the fitness advice flooding your feed and replace it with what actually works for women in midlife. We start with the "eat more protein, lift heavier" noise online and dig into why that advice, without context, is nearly useless. Stephanie breaks down exactly how you know you're lifting heavy enough (hint: it has nothing to do with a specific number of pounds), why so many of us skipped straight past the strength foundation we needed in our 20s and 30s, and how that's showing up now in injuries and frustration. This episode will change how you think about every workout, every meal, and every wellness trend you scroll past. We Go Deep On: How to actually know you're lifting heavy enough (it has nothing to do with the number on the dumbbell) Why so many midlife women skipped the strength foundation they needed decades ago The Trendelenburg test and why 85-90% of back pain patients have weak glutes The direct link between glute strength and chronic low back pain My own disc rupture and disc replacement story, and what rebuilt my lower body Progressive overload without the injury risk, including rest periods that actually work VO2 max training and why cardio still matters after 40 Weighted vests, vibration plates, and step counts: what the research actually says Why "toning" isn't a real physiological process Rethinking protein without obsessive tracking An honest take on GLP-1 medications and what most protocols are missing Stephanie's simple, non-negotiable supplement list Why the fear of carbs (and honestly, fear of everything but protein) has gotten out of hand Letting go of "skinny" as the goal and redefining what a healthy body actually looks like Catch the full episode on YOUTUBE HERE: https://bit.ly/MidlifeConversationsYouTube Learn More About Dr. Stephanie Estima Instagram ➜ https://www.instagram.com/dr.stephanie.estima Website ➜ https://drstephanieestima.com/ Book ➜ The Betty Body: A Geeky Goddess' Guide to Intuitive Eating, Balanced Hormones, and Transformative Sex https://amzn.to/45CNOg5 Thank you to our show sponsors: TIMELINE:Timeline is offering 20% off your order! 544: The Real Reason Your Skin Aged Overnight in Menopause with Jennifer Scheinman

What if the reason your skincare stopped working has nothing to do with your products, and everything to do with your mitochondria? I sit down with Jennifer Scheinman, registered dietitian and senior manager of nutrition affairs at Timeline, to talk about the science most of us have never applied to our skin. We already know mitochondrial decline drives muscle loss, brain fog, and fatigue as we age. I go deep on why that exact same cellular decline is showing up on your face as wrinkles, sagging, thinning, and dullness, and why retinol and vitamin C alone are not enough to address it. I go deep on the surprising connection between estrogen and mitochondrial function, why so many of us wake up one day feeling like we do not recognize our own skin, and what is actually happening at the cellular level during that shift. I go deep on the controversial sun exposure conversation, the difference between natural and clean skincare, and the real research behind urolithin A, the molecule at the center of Timeline's new MitoPure skincare line. Jennifer walks us through exactly how mitophagy works, what the clinical data actually shows in women ages 47 to 65, and how to build a simplified routine without giving up the products you already love. If your skin has felt like it aged overnight, this conversation will change how you think about what it actually needs. We Go Deep On: Why mitochondrial decline shows up on your face before anywhere else The "reverse puberty" of menopausal skin Why retinol gets harder to tolerate as you age The estrogen-mitochondria connection nobody talks about Is sun exposure good or bad? The Goldilocks answer Why "too fit" can actually age your face faster What mitophagy is and why it matters for your skin Natural vs. clean vs. toxic: cutting through the noise The real research behind urolithin A and MitoPure How to simplify your skincare routine without losing results Catch the full episode on YOUTUBE HERE: https://bit.ly/MidlifeConversationsYouTube Learn More About Jennifer Scheinman Instagram ➜ https://www.instagram.com/timeline_longevity Website ➜ https:// timeline.com/NATALIEJILL Thank you to our show sponsors: QUANTUM UPGRADE: Try Quantum Upgrade completely free for 15 days—no credit card required. 543: Is Adrenal Fatigue a Real Diagnosis? A Doctor Explains with Dr. Allan Bacon

Is adrenal fatigue even real, or have we all been chasing the wrong diagnosis? I sat down with Dr. Allan Bacon, a dentist turned nutrition and powerlifting coach who has built his career sitting in the middle ground between conventional medicine and the wellness world, calling out both sides when the science says they've gotten it wrong. And one of the most eye opening parts of this conversation was about adrenal fatigue, a term so many of us have used to describe our own exhaustion. Dr. Bacon walked me through why it isn't actually a recognized medical diagnosis, what's really going on in our bodies when we feel that drained, and why the label matters so much for finding something that actually helps. We also get into the placebo effect, the truth about peptides like BPC-157, and what the research really says about our metabolism in midlife. We Go Deep On: Why "adrenal fatigue" isn't an actual medical diagnosis, and what it means that our adrenals are usually functioning just fine The real reason we feel that drained, and why "stress and burnout" is a more accurate description than adrenal fatigue What actually helps when we're running on empty, including specific, research backed options like glycine and magnesium Why the placebo effect showed up as a 22 pound strength jump in trained powerlifters, and what that means for how we think about our own bodies What the research does and doesn't say about BPC-157 and peptides A landmark study showing metabolism doesn't actually change from age 20 to 60, and what that means for the way we've been told to think about midlife Catch the full episode on YOUTUBE HERE: https://bit.ly/MidlifeConversationsYouTube Learn More About Dr. Allan Bacon Instagram ➜ https://www.instagram.com/drallanbacon Website ➜ https://mauiathletics.com/ Thank you to our show sponsors: TIMELINE: Timeline is offering 20% off your order of Mitopure! Use code NATALIEJILL at checkout on https://quantumupgrade.io/start What if the headache you can't explain, the brain fog that won't lift, or the exhaustion no lab test can find has been sitting in the walls of your own home this whole time? This week Natalie sits down with Dr. Henz, a neuroscientist and EEG researcher, and Philipp Von Holtzendorff-Fehling, a former T-Mobile executive turned tech founder, for a conversation that goes places most health podcasts never go. Dr. Henz shares her own story of getting mysteriously ill in a tech-filled office, including a decade-long fertility struggle doctors couldn't explain, and how she eventually connected it to the invisible electromagnetic fields surrounding her every day. Philipp pulls back the curtain on his years inside the telecom industry, why he walked away from a corporate career to dig into this question full time, and what his team found after testing dozens of products claiming to protect you from EMF exposure (spoiler: most of them do nothing, and a couple made things worse). You'll hear about the internal lab research Dr. Henz and Philipp have compiled using high-density EEG technology, what happens to brain wave activity during something as simple as a phone call, and their perspective on why getting closer to nature and natural frequencies may matter more than we think. This one will change how you think about your phone, your WiFi router, and the space you sleep in tonight. WE GO DEEP ON: Dr. Henz's personal health crisis and the invisible cause behind it Why your body has no built-in sensor for electromagnetic exposure What high-density EEG reveals about brain activity and stress frequencies Philipp's journey from T-Mobile executive to EMF researcher The internal lab data behind Quantum Upgrade's technology What happened when they tested 70+ EMF "protection" products Simple, low-effort shifts you can make starting tonight Catch the full episode on YOUTUBE HERE: https://bit.ly/MidlifeConversationsYouTube Episode Links: See Natalie's brain scan results https://www.midlifeconversations.com/nataliejillresults/ Leela Quantum: Get 10% off your first Leela Quantum order with the code NatalieJill at checkout at https://midlifeconversations.com/leela Quantum Upgrade: Try Quantum Upgrade completely free for 15 days—no credit card required. 541: Why HRT Isn't Fixing Your Dryness with Dr. Anna Cabeca

Why does your body still feel dry, itchy, and irritated in places you never expected, even after starting hormone replacement therapy? I brought back the girlfriend doctor, Dr. Anna Cabeca, because there's an area of our midlife health we just don't talk about enough, and it's costing women their comfort, their confidence, and in some cases, far more than that. In this episode, Anna and I get into the real reasons behind vaginal dryness, recurring UTIs, and burning that no one can explain, and why so many of these symptoms don't fully resolve even with HRT. We unpack the massive difference between synthetic progestins and bioidentical progesterone, and why so many women who've had a hysterectomy have been wrongly told they don't need progesterone at all. We also go deep on the vaginal microbiome, why it works completely differently from your gut microbiome, and the surprisingly small things, like a single course of antibiotics, that can throw the whole system off balance. I go deep on the personal side of this too, from Brooks' hotel room debut as an influencer to why I still can't sleep on cycled progesterone no matter how many times Anna tells me to try it. We Go Deep On: Why vaginal dryness and itching often don't improve even with systemic HRT The real difference between bioidentical progesterone and synthetic progestins Why women without a uterus have been wrongly denied progesterone for decades Pregnenolone, the hormone precursor nobody talks about Vaginal microbiome and why it works the opposite of your gut What vaginal rejuvenation procedures actually require to work The mindset shift that keeps Anna consistent with her own health Catch the full episode on YOUTUBE HERE: https://bit.ly/MidlifeConversationsYouTube Products mentioned: Julva: https://dranna.com/nataliejill Balance Cream: https://dranna.com/nataliejillbalance Mighty Maca: http://dranna.com/nataliejillmaca Velve: http://dranna.com/natalievelve Use code NATALIEJILL to save Learn More About Dr. Anna Cabeca Instagram ➜ http://www.instagram.com/thegirlfrienddoctor Website ➜ https://drannacabeca.com/ Thank you to our show sponsors: QUANTUM UPGRADE: Try Quantum Upgrade completely free for 15 days—no credit card required. 540: Stop Taking Fish Oil: What Your Cells Actually Need Instead with Jessica Kane Berman

If we are doing all the things in midlife and we still feel off. The brain fog. The bloating. The dull skin. The hormones that feel louder, not quieter. The recovery that takes three days from one glass of wine. This episode is for us. Because everyone keeps telling us the next step is hormones. HRT. Bioidenticals. Patches. Pellets. And those can absolutely help. But there are three quiet things slowing down in our bodies at the same time, and nobody is teaching us about them in plain English. The walls of our cells. Where hormones are supposed to knock and get a response. The body's trash truck. The thing that carries used hormones out of the body so they do not pile back up. The wallpaper lining our gut. The thing that keeps inflammation from running the whole show. All three slow down in midlife. That is why more hormones alone has not been the full answer for so many of us. My guest is Jessica Kane Berman, co-owner of BodyBio, a third-generation cellular health company her grandfather founded almost 30 years ago. Jessica walked through PCOS, fertility issues, mold, and Lyme, and she healed using the science her own family pioneered. We go through all three slowdowns in plain English, and we end with one thing we can do this week. This is the foundation underneath everything we are already doing. WE GO DEEP ON: • Why more hormones alone has not been the full answer in midlife • The three quiet things slowing down in our bodies at the same time • The walls of our cells, and why brain fog and dull skin are clues • The body's trash truck (bile), and why estrogen feels louder when it slows • The wallpaper lining our gut, and why food sensitivities and belly inflammation show up after 40 • Where HRT fits in (and why these three make HRT actually work) • What PC, TUDCA, and butyrate really do, in plain English • One simple thing to do this week if we are overwhelmed by where to start TIMESTAMPS • 00:00 | Why more hormones alone has not been the full answer • 06:00 | First slowdown. The walls of our cells. • 18:00 | Second slowdown. The body's trash truck. • 32:00 | Third slowdown. The wallpaper lining our gut. • 44:00 | All three together. Where HRT fits. • 52:00 | One thing to do this week. 539: The Heart Disease Symptoms Doctors Keep Calling "Atypical" with Dr. Jayne Morgan

Before menopause, our risk of heart disease is HALF what a man's is. Within a few years of our last period, it is EQUAL. By our seventies, it is HIGHER. So why is nobody screening us for it? This is the conversation midlife women have been waiting for. I sat down with Dr. Jayne Morgan, a research cardiologist and Vice President of Medical Affairs at Hello Heart, who is calling out menopause itself as the most missed opportunity in preventive cardiology. She is the creator of the Stairwell Chronicles, a science communicator who translates complex cardiology into kitchen-table language, and she has spent 25+ years researching what is actually happening to our hearts in midlife. This is our fourth cardiologist on the show. And she is different. She brings the research, the data, and a fierce honesty about why our healthcare system was built around the male body, and what we do about it now. WE GO DEEP ON: • Why menopause is a CARDIOVASCULAR event, not a gynecologic footnote • The half / equal / greater stat that every midlife woman needs to memorize • The 37-minute delay women face in the ER for cardiac care, and the exact phrase that gets you seen • Why hot flashes, night sweats, palpitations, and brain fog are cardiovascular signals, not just inconveniences • What estrogen actually does for your heart and what happens when it drops, and the 10-year HRT window • Her take on statins, the online backlash, and what the research actually says about LDL • What to do if you tried a statin and felt terrible — • Why it is LDL AND insulin resistance AND inflammation — not one versus the other • The labs to demand: ApoB, Lp(a), hs-CRP, fasting insulin, CAC scan • Why women were excluded from cardiovascular clinical trials until 1993, and how that built the entire field on the wrong data • The exact advocacy phrase that gets your concern documented in your chart • Three things you can do this week that actually move the needle This is not a doom episode. This is the conversation you bring to your doctor tomorrow. TIMESTAMPS: • 00:00 — Why menopause is a cardiovascular event • 12:00 — The symptoms women miss and the 37-minute ER delay • 26:00 — Estrogen, HRT and the 10-year window • 42:00 — LDL, cholesterol and the statin debate • 54:00 — What to test, what to track, what to demand • 66:00 — Health equity and self-advocacy • 76:00 — Three things this week Catch the full episode on YOUTUBE HERE: https://bit.ly/MidlifeConversationsYouTube Learn More About Dr. Jayne Morgan Instagram ➜ http://www.instagram.com/drjaynemorgan Website ➜ https://drjaynemorgan.com/ Hello Heart➜ https://www.helloheart.com/ Thank you to our show sponsors: LEELA QUANTUM: Get 10% off your first Leela Quantum order with the code NatalieJill at checkout at https://midlifeconversations.com/leela TIMELINE: Timeline is offering 20% off your order of Mitopure! 538: Fat Loss in Midlife - What the Last 20 Years Has Taught Me

Join us for a LIVE interactive fat loss workshop to continue this conversation: nataliejillclass.com What if everything you were taught about losing weight in your 20s and 30s is actually working against you now? I've spent almost 20 years coaching midlife women through fat loss, and I've lived every bit of it myself, ten years of perimenopause, post-menopause, injuries, autoimmune issues, and all. Today I'm done watching the internet sell midlife women quick fixes that were never built for our bodies. I'm laying out the five pillars I've seen actually work, in the order they matter, and the why behind each one, so you can stop chasing the next trend and start building something that lasts. I GO DEEP ON: I break down what's actually happening hormonally, metabolically, and physically in our bodies during midlife I go deep on why everything we were taught about dieting in the 90s and 2000s set us up to fail I share the real story of the moment that got me into this work, and the inner work that had to happen before any fat loss did I go deep on real food, gluten, dairy, and why calorie counting doesn't work the way we think it does I explain why muscle is the most underrated pillar of midlife fat loss and what happens if we don't build it I go deep on the free biohacks nobody talks about because nobody can sell them I explain why being your own health detective is non-negotiable at this stage of life Thank you to our show sponsors: QUANTUM UPGRADE: Try Quantum Upgrade completely free for 15 days—no credit card required. 537: You Can Eat Perfectly Clean and Still Be Mineral Deficient - Here's Why with Caroline Alan

You guys know I am a HUGE believer in the right supplements and the right protocols. So when I tell you that today's episode is about the FOUNDATION underneath ALL of it, lean in. Modern scientists believe we are operating at only thirty-seven to forty percent of the mineral levels our bodies actually need. Minerals are the only nutrient class your body cannot make. They are the foundation under hormones, gut, sleep, energy, hair, and yes, even under the great supplements you are already taking. This is the conversation midlife women have been waiting for. I sat down with Caroline Alan, founder of BEAM Minerals and author of The Mineral Reset, published by Hay House (with a foreword by Dr. Mindy Pelz, who called it "a lifeline"). Caroline was the woman doing everything right at 50 and still falling apart. Brain fog. Hair loss. Inflammation. Three miscarriages. Doctors told her it was just normal aging. She went deep into the science of minerals and it changed everything for her. This is NOT anti-supplement. This is the FOUNDATION that finally makes the supplements and protocols you are already loving actually land. WE GO DEEP ON: Why minerals are the FOUNDATION under everything you are already doing The bathtub moment that started Caroline's mineral mission at 50 Why 40 to 45 cups of spinach a day would not even cover ONE mineral Glyphosate, soil depletion, and what 19 BILLION pounds of spraying has done Bioavailability — the word every midlife woman needs to know What humic and fulvic actually are, and why one chemist calls fulvic the "God molecule" Why "you are what you eat" is wrong — and what to say instead Perimenopause and menopause: the 5 key minerals (Magnesium, Calcium, Zinc, Selenium, Boron) Sleep, hair loss, and fasting — all the mineral connections nobody told us The simplest possible 14-day reset to feel the difference TIMESTAMPS: 00:00 — The bathtub moment + the foundation idea 12:00 — Why minerals are the foundation 26:00 — What minerals actually do + humic and fulvic 40:00 — Menopause, sleep, hair, fasting 54:00 — The ONE sentence to take + the 14-day reset Catch the full episode on YOUTUBE HERE: https://bit.ly/MidlifeConversationsYouTube Learn More About Caroline Alan Instagram ➜ http://www.instagram.com/beamminerals Website ➜ https://midlifeconversations.com/beam and use code NATALIEJILL to save!
