Child protection beyond the family home: Contextual safeguarding with Carlene Firmin
This is the 30th episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, featuring Bruce and Denise Morcombe. Today we hear from a researcher who has single-handedly revolutionised worldwide thinking of the best approaches to keeping children safe from harm. Professor Carlene Firmin from Durham University in the UK is known internationally for her work in what she has termed “contextual safeguarding”, which describes a vision for improving responses to young people at risk that goes beyond the current focus on their family homes. Her work has transformed the response of child welfare systems in the UK and beyond, and shown a need for a complete overhaul of child-protection systems around the world. Professor Firmin has researched young people’s experiences of community and group-based violence since 2008, finding that many public spaces are inherently unsafe for children, and that more comprehensive approaches are needed as a society to protect them. She argues that exploitation, peer-abuse and street-based violence directly affecting young people shows a need to look beyond parents and families, if we want to protect children from the risks they face outside their front doors. It's time for difficult conversations to shine light on this hidden topic. This podcast talks openly about child abuse, child sexual abuse, child sexual exploitation and harmful sexual behaviours. Each episode of this series will feature practical insights on how to teach your child safety in the world today. REMINDER: As Denise says in the podcast - Take care when listening. Breaking the Silence around Sibling Sexual Abuse with author Alice Perle
Australian author Alice Perle is a courageous voice in a growing global conversation about Sibling Sexual Abuse. As a survivor of Sibling Sexual Abuse herself, Alice has now written about her experiences and combined that with the latest scientific research showing how the problem is far more widespread than many in society realise. Sibling Sexual Abuse is the most common form of child sexual abuse in families - at least three times more common than incest between a parent and child. However discussing the topic is one of society’s last taboos. That’s something that Alice Perle hopes to change on today’s episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast. By shining a light on Sibling Sexual Abuse, she hopes to prevent more children from becoming victims, as well as take away the stigma and shame that so many survivors feel, so they can seek the help they need. It’s time for difficult conversations to shine light on this hidden topic. This podcast talks openly about child abuse, child sexual abuse, child sexual exploitation and harmful sexual behaviours. Each episode of this series will feature practical insights on how to teach your child safety in the world today. REMINDER: As Denise says in the podcast - Take care when listening. Director of UK's AIM project Carol Carson shares her four decades experience responding to harmful sexual behaviours in children
In her almost four decades of responding to harmful sexual behaviours in children, social worker Carol Carson has seen many changes to treatment in that time. Now as director of the AIM project in the UK, Carol is taking what she’s learnt as the most important aspect - restorative practices for children and families - and training people around the world in how to practice it. Her extensive research is also extending into how to best respond to children on the autism spectrum who engage in harmful sexual behaviours, and the importance of a very tailored response for neurodivergent children. Today - Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation - goes to Dublin Ireland to speak to Carol and hear about how AIM’s resources and best practice guidelines are leading the way in best practice around the world, in helping children recover and lead better lives. Sexual development in the online age: How we can support our children with Stuart Allardyce from Edinburgh
This generation of children more than any other, is living almost their entire lives online. School, recreation, gaming, and catching up with friends all increasingly happen in the online space - particularly since the COVID pandemic. But how does that affect their relationships and sexual development as they become young adults? Stuart Allardyce is a director at the Lucy Faithfull Foundation in Scotland and has worked with children and young people who have displayed harmful sexual behaviours as a practitioner, manager and trainer for more than two decades. His research is internationally respected, so much so that he is now the chair of NOTA UK and Ireland - which is the National Organisation for the Treatment of Abuse. Today - Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation - goes to Edinburgh Scotland where Stuart is based, to hear what Australia can learn from their approach, by having resources to help children navigate this new landscape online, where they spend so much of their time. It’s time for difficult conversations to shine light on this hidden topic. This podcast talks openly about child abuse, child sexual abuse, child sexual exploitation and harmful sexual behaviours. How to guide your family through the crisis when your child has engaged in harmful sexual behaviours - a case study
This is the 25th episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, featuring Bruce and Denise Morcombe. Today we’re going to hear from a mother whose child has engaged in harmful sexual behaviours, and the fallout on their family. This mother, who we will call Amy, tells us about the lack of support she continues to feel to this day, and the personal toll from the ongoing consequences of the actions of her son. Amy never imagined that this could happen to her. She was a mother to two young boys, and had spent much of her adult life working towards a good life for her husband and two children. So it was a shock to discover after her marriage broke down, that her son had behaved in a sexually inappropriate way with a young girl. The consequences of that act still reverberate years later. Our host Nance Haxton interviewed Amy about her experience, but we have engaged an actor to voice her words exactly from the transcript, to ensure we give Amy and all those involved anonymity. But her perspective is incredibly valuable, as so many parents in this situation never speak of the experience because of the shame. And because of that silence, we don’t get to learn how to prevent these situations from happening again, or how to better look after all of the victims in these circumstances. We also speak to Toni Cash, the Principal Advisor for Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation at youth services charity yourtown, about her advice to parents who find themselves in a similar situation. All the names have been changed to protect their identities. REMINDER: As Denise says in the podcast - Take care when listening. Restorative processes around harmful sexual behaviour in children - an international perspective from Christine McCarlie
Christine McCarlie is a Glasgow based social worker who has worked with children displaying harmful sexual behaviours for three decades. She’s seen huge changes in how best to respond in that time, and her expertise is now channeled into co-authoring the AIM Intervention Guidance, which is being taught in Australia and around the world as best practice for how to help children recover. She also provides support to staff working in specialist services and residential and foster care, with her risk management protocols now widely used throughout Scotland. In this episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation - host Nance Haxton goes to Glasgow to speak to Christine about her work. She explains how understanding trauma and responding to the complex needs of children and young people is key to changing their lives, and what Australia can learn from that approach. It’s time for difficult conversations to shine light on this hidden topic. This podcast talks openly about child abuse, child sexual abuse, child sexual exploitation and harmful sexual behaviours. Why telling young people to avoid sexting doesn’t work and what to do instead with Giselle Woodley and Lelia Green
This is the 23rd episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, featuring Bruce and Denise Morcombe. In this episode we’re going to find out why telling our children not to engage in sexting - simply isn’t working. It’s a conversation that many adults dread - talking to the young people in their lives about the dangers of sexting. What is sexting? Young people refer to this more commonly as nudes or dick-pics. It’s creating explicit text messages, or naked or partially naked sexual photos or videos, and then sending them online through an app or from your phone. While the dangers of sexting are well known, and adults think that we have made that clear to children by telling them “just don’t do it”, research from the Edith Cowan University is showing that approach is not working. And that in the same way we teach school children about safe sex, we also need to teach them about safe sexting, because it is now such an omnipresent part of their lives. Researchers Giselle Woodley and Lelia Green conducted extensive interviews with teenagers to find out how and why current messages to simply avoid sexting are failing to hit the mark, despite the legal risks that children know they take by doing it. On this episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation - Giselle and Lelia tell us about the sensitive way they conducted their research, to give teenagers a voice on this complex issue, a voice which so often is not heard. The road to justice and healing with actor and child sexual abuse survivor Madeleine West
This is the 22nd episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, featuring Bruce and Denise Morcombe. It’s a tragic aspect of child sexual abuse, that often the victim survivors are denied a voice to speak about what happened to them. That in the noise of reporting and researching the prevalence of child sexual abuse, their voice is not heard. Community attitudes, legal restrictions, and outdated attitudes of who is responsible, can leave the person who survived the abuse, feeling blame and guilt for what happened to them. And that leads to silence. And people not realising the extent of the problem throughout all levels of society. Australian actor Madeleine West is on a mission to turn that around. She has bravely told her story of child sexual abuse in multiple media outlets, in print, through audio, and on programs such as 60 Minutes. And she’s hoping that by doing this, she can empower others to tell the truth of what happened to them. So that the shame on victims ends, and is rightly placed on the perpetrator. By doing this Madeleine hopes that awareness is raised, and hopefully prevents other children from becoming victims. Today on Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast for the Daniel Morcombe Foundation - Madeleine West tells us about the turning point that enabled her to tell her story. She also talks about the supports she continues to use to help her cope with the revelations, and what she hopes people who have had similar experiences of child abuse can do to access help, on the long road to justice and healing. As Denise Morcombe says - t’s time for difficult conversations to shine light on this hidden topic. This podcast talks openly about child abuse, child sexual abuse, child sexual exploitation and harmful sexual behaviours. Each episode of this series will feature practical insights on how to teach your child safety in the world today. REMINDER: As Denise says in the podcast - Take care when listening. The hidden dangers to children in online gaming with Dr Dennis Desmond
This is the 21st episode of Keeping Kids Safe - A Bright Futures podcast by the Daniel Morcombe Foundation, featuring Bruce and Denise Morcombe. In this episode we’re going to find out how a former counterintelligence special agent for the US Army and the FBI is now using his diverse investigative skills to crack down on cyber crime - including the criminals targeting children online. Dr Dennis Desmond specialises in international and state sponsored cyber threats - and his research is finding that the processes used by criminals to launder cryptocurrencies on the dark net are now being used increasingly for online child abuse. He tells us how platforms such as Reddit and Twitch are being used to groom and recruit young people into criminal underworlds and even terrorist groups, and what parents should do about this dangerous trend. That includes the danger signs parents should look out for and what strategies they can use to counter this, particularly - as he describes it - how parents should actively become their child’s first line of defence.
