Trying to 'make it' as an independent artist today is hard to say the least. It's not just getting out the mic and interface to record your own music, it's navigating yourself through each part of the industry; marketing through social platforms, trying to win a following (or even sometimes buy). I know there are many others alike who understand the struggle and so I want to have a space where we can chat very honestly about how (not) to be an artist!
In this episode I have guest Walter Kocays, folk artist and man of many talents talking with me. We discuss what it's like being an independent artist today and the difficulty of juggling this with everyday modern life. We resonate with each-other in starting our music journey a little 'late'.
In this episode I am chatting with SBR Bone and Star AKA Sam who tells me all about her ever changing aspirations as a musician and how they have led her to where she is today. We talk all about the highs and lows of the music industry; being a woman in the industry, fighting social media algorithms and spending more money than you earn in doing what we love. This might be one a lot of independent artists, musicians and creatives will resonate with I think!
This is the first episode of my very own podcast series 'How (not) to be an Artist. Being honest here, I was pretty nervous about this one but just wanted to chat about some of my own personal struggles being an independent artist and share with you what I will be hoping to talk about with guests on the podcast. I'm sure a lot of artists and other music creatives out there will relate to a lot of what I have to say!
