About the show

Each week we explore Womanhood and Leadership with the goal to question the status quo and challenge our thinking so we celebrate every woman as a leader. Our episodes will interview leaders in the field, meet authors, explore books on the subject, hear inspiring stories, or talk with organizations leading the charge for women to lead. We’ll look at the different topics from different generational perspectives as my daughters, a Millennial and a Gen Z, will join me, a Boomer, from time to time. We hope to make you laugh and leave inspired as you hear our voices on this very important topic.

314. SOUND BITE: Being a Beginner: The Courage to Be Seen Not Knowing

Why can it feel so difficult to admit that we don’t know something? This Sound Bite was inspired by my conversation with sport and performance psychologist Dr. Darby Bonomi, who reminded us that there is no shame in being at the beginning. But that got me thinking. Maybe being a beginner isn’t actually the hardest part. Maybe it’s letting other people see us not knowing. In this reflection, I explore some of my own history with pretending I knew something when I didn’t—and begin detangling what may have been underneath it. For me, knowing became connected with achievement, acceptance, and belonging at an early age. Mistakes weren’t always comfortable. Asking for help wasn’t something I remember doing very often. And appearing intelligent could feel like a form of protection. So what happens when being a beginner requires us to say: I don’t know. I don’t understand. I made a mistake. Can you help me? We explore how our fear of judgment, rejection, or appearing “not good enough” can keep us pretending—and how self-acceptance and humility might offer another way. Because humility doesn’t have to mean making ourselves smaller. Maybe it means being able to hold two truths at once: I’m intelligent. And I don’t know this. I’m accomplished. And I’m a beginner here. I belong. And I can ask for help. In This Sound Bite Why being seen as a beginner can feel harder than actually being one What pretending to know may be protecting The connection between knowledge, achievement, belonging, and self-worth Why asking for help can feel so vulnerable How self-acceptance can make room for not knowing Humility as an honest recognition of both our strengths and our limitations Why confidence comes through experience The stages of skill acquisition—from novice toward expertise How asking for help can create connection and community Why we can be an expert in one room and a beginner in the next And perhaps the question underneath all of it is: Am I secure enough in who I am to let you see me learning? Because we don’t have to know everything to belong. We don’t have to pretend when we don’t know. And we don’t have to use what we know to prove that we’re worthy of being in the room. Sometimes leadership begins with having the courage to say: “I don’t know yet. Can you show me?” Inspired By Episode 313: The Voice That Keeps Women Playing Small — with Dr. Darby Bonomi Darby is a sport and performance psychologist and author of Unshrinkable: Why Strong Women Secretly Criticize, Diminish, and Thwart Themselves—and How to Stop . 🌐 https://www.darbybonomi.com/ 📖 https://www.unshrinkablebook.com/ Coming Next In our next episode, I’m joined by Lisa Ketchum Hendrickson , founder of Human Recovery, somatic nurse coach, and a nurse with more than 30 years of experience. After losing her two oldest sons eight months apart to suicide and addiction, Lisa’s understanding of trauma and recovery became deeply personal. Our conversation expands the meaning of recovery beyond addiction or loss. We may also be recovering from trauma, grief, old survival patterns, ancestral wounds, transitions, or beliefs and social norms that no longer serve us. 313. The Voice That Keeps Women Playing Small — with Dr. Darby Bonomi

Some of the loudest voices we hear aren't coming from other people—they're the ones inside our own heads. That inner critic can convince us we're not ready, that everyone else has it figured out, or that asking for help somehow means we've failed. Over time, those thoughts can quietly keep us playing smaller than we're capable of. In this episode, I'm joined by Dr. Darby Bonomi , sport and performance psychologist and author of Unshrinkable: Why Strong Women Secretly Criticize, Diminish, and Thwart Themselves—and How to Stop . Darby has spent decades working with high-achieving individuals, and together we explore why even accomplished women can struggle with self-criticism, comparison, perfectionism, and the pressure to appear as though they have everything under control. We also talk about something Darby calls the myth of the charmed life —the tendency to look at someone else's polished exterior and assume their path has somehow been easier than ours. And Darby shares one simple phrase from her equestrian coach that has stayed with her for decades: "Go ride your horse." It's a reminder to stop overthinking, trust your preparation, be present, and do the thing that's yours to do. In This Episode, We Discuss Why successful women can believe everyone else has a "charmed life" How self-criticism and perfectionism can quietly keep us playing small Community versus competition—and why lifting others doesn't diminish our own opportunities Why there is no shame in being a beginner How "Go ride your horse" became a lifelong reminder for Darby to trust herself and be present Why confidence comes through experience Envy as information—and even a possible call to action Learning from people who are farther along rather than simply comparing ourselves to them Why presence, gratitude, and personal growth require practice What Darby would tell her 20-something self today About Dr. Darby Bonomi Darby Bonomi, PhD, is a sport and performance psychologist who has facilitated transformations in hundreds of high-achieving individuals. After two decades as a clinical psychologist, psychoanalyst, and faculty member at the San Francisco Psychoanalytic Institute, she shifted her focus to performance coaching in 2016. She works with competitive equestrians, entrepreneurs, and professionals globally—primarily women determined not to shrink under self-criticism or others' expectations. Dr. Bonomi is an actively competing equestrian herself and has delivered sport psychology clinics nationwide. Her writing has been featured in Practical Horseman, Psychology Today, USHJA In Stride, The Plaid Horse, and The Chronicle of the Horse . Darby's Book 📘 Unshrinkable: Why Strong Women Secretly Criticize, Diminish, and Thwart Themselves—and How to Stop Drawing from decades of psychology and performance coaching, Darby explores the patterns that can cause capable women to diminish themselves—and what can happen when we stop playing small. 312. SOUND BITE: What Resentment Is Trying to Tell Us

What if resentment isn't the problem... What if it's the invitation? Inspired by my recent conversation with communication strategist and CEO Lee Caraher , this Sound Bite explores what often lies beneath resentment—and how a simple pause can help us move from assumptions and "shoulds" toward greater understanding. Resentment can begin with something as ordinary as a disappointment that never gets talked about or something much deeper that continues to replay in our minds. Either way, it asks us to pay attention. Drawing on insights from Lee Caraher , Brené Brown , and Byron Katie , I reflect on how resentment often begins with hurt, grows through the stories we tell ourselves, and quietly keeps us stuck in the past. Together, we'll explore how pausing, journaling, and asking a few simple questions can help us move toward greater clarity, understanding, and perhaps even forgiveness. In this Sound Bite: • Why resentment often begins with hurt • How "should" and assumptions fuel resentment • Brené Brown's question: "What do I need that I'm afraid to ask for?" • Byron Katie's invitation: "Is it true?" • How journaling helps separate facts from the stories we create • Why pausing creates space for understanding • How requests and offers can replace assumptions Questions for Reflection Where do I notice resentment in my body? What story am I telling myself? Is it true? What do I need that I haven't asked for? What part of this belongs to me? Sometimes the most important conversation isn't the one we have with someone else. It's the one we have with ourselves. 311. Helping 5,000 Women Be Heard with Lee Caraher

What if one conversation could change the way you lead? Communication strategist, CEO, and author Lee Caraher believes it can. As CEO of Double Forte, Lee has spent decades helping organizations communicate more clearly, build stronger teams, and navigate difficult conversations. Along the way, she noticed something troubling: too many women's voices were missing from important conversations. Rather than simply point out the problem, Lee set an ambitious goal—to help 5,000 women be heard as confident spokespersons and recognized experts in their fields. She's now remarkably close to reaching that milestone. In this conversation, Lee shares practical strategies for communicating with clarity, resolving conflict before it grows, and building trust through honest conversations. We also explore why assumptions create unnecessary misunderstandings, how emotions can become valuable information instead of obstacles, and why great leadership begins with saying what you actually mean. Whether you're leading a team, your family, a volunteer organization, your community, or simply yourself through your next chapter, this episode offers practical ideas you can begin using today. In this episode, you'll learn: Why Lee set a goal to help 5,000 women be heard How clear communication strengthens relationships and leadership Why assumptions and "they should know" often create unnecessary conflict A simple framework for turning difficult conversations into productive ones How emotions can become valuable information instead of something to suppress Why your personal brand is really your reputation Why great leaders communicate with clarity, curiosity, and compassion One of my favorite reminders from our conversation: "You cannot overcommunicate." 310. AT THE THRESHOLD l What Do Birthdays Measure? Receiving Love with New Eyes

What if birthdays aren't really about getting older? What if they're invitations to discover the stories we've carried about love, worth, and belonging? In this new At the Threshold reflection, I share how a recent birthday became much more than a celebration. It became an unexpected opportunity to receive love differently, revisit a childhood belief I'd carried for decades, and discover how one forgotten photograph changed the way I saw my own story. Inspired by a simple phrase from recent guest Wani Iris Manly — "Let the moment surprise you." —this episode explores what can happen when we stop measuring our lives by expectations and begin receiving them with gratitude instead. 309. Money Isn't About Money: It's About the Story You Believe Guest: Miriam Castilla

What if your relationship with money isn't really about money at all? In this thought-provoking conversation, Yo sits down with business and money mentor Miriam Castilla to explore the stories we inherit about money, wealth, and self-worth—and how those stories quietly shape the choices we make every day. Miriam believes that creating financial freedom requires more than practical strategies. It also means uncovering the beliefs we've carried since childhood about what we deserve, how hard we must work, and whether "enough" will ever feel like enough. Together, they explore the difference between a money mindset and a wealth mindset , why couples often approach money differently, and how small shifts in perspective can replace scarcity with empowerment. Whether you're building a business, planning for retirement, or simply rethinking your relationship with money, this conversation offers a refreshing reminder: Sometimes the most important investment we make is in changing the story we tell ourselves. In this episode, you'll discover: Why money is often a reflection of our beliefs about self-worth. The difference between having "enough" and creating lasting wealth. How childhood experiences shape our financial decisions as adults. Why money conversations with a partner don't have to become emotional battles. The importance of making financial decisions from a place of empowerment instead of scarcity. How practical financial systems and mindset work together to create freedom. Why building financial buffers creates more choices during life's unexpected transitions. The value of taking small, consistent steps instead of trying to change everything at once. 308. SOUND BITE: When Anxiety Takes the Wheel

What if anxiety isn't trying to defeat us? What if it's asking us a question? In this Sound Bite, inspired by my recent conversation with Lisa Woodruff , I explore the role anxiety plays in our everyday lives—especially when we're trying to lead our homes, our work, and ourselves. We often think of anxiety as something to eliminate. But perhaps anxiety is simply our mind trying to predict a future that hasn't happened yet. Through a personal story, reflections on trust, hope, and faith, and insights from Brené Brown , Jonathan Haidt's The Anxious Generation , and Lisa's concept of being the CEO of our households , I consider a different way to respond when uncertainty shows up. Instead of asking, "What if everything goes wrong?" What if we asked, "What is the next indicated step?" In this episode we explore: ✨ Why anxiety is different from everyday stress ✨ How uncertainty fuels our "what if" thinking ✨ Why trying to control everything only creates more overwhelm ✨ What it really means to lead ourselves through uncertain times ✨ How trust grows from remembering what we've already survived ✨ Why hope, faith, and trust work together when life doesn't go according to plan Because being the CEO of your life doesn't mean predicting every storm. It means trusting yourself to lead through one. 307. Be the CEO of Your Home, Not Its Employee | Lisa Woodruff

Have you ever finished a busy day wondering where all your time and energy went? The meals were made. The laundry was folded. The appointments were scheduled. The emails were answered. Yet somehow, it still feels like there was so much more to do. In this episode of Girl, Take the Lead! , I sit down with Lisa Woodruff , founder and CEO of Organize 365 , to explore why overwhelm isn't simply about having too much to do—it's about the invisible work of managing our lives. Lisa believes organization is a learnable skill. After years as a professional organizer and earning her PhD studying household management, she's developed a powerful framework that invites us to think differently about leadership—not just at work, but at home. Instead of seeing ourselves as employees of our households, what if we became the CEOs? Together, we explore: ✨ Why overwhelm can feel like quicksand—and how to stop sinking ✨ The invisible mental load that often leads to anxiety ✨ Why leading a household is one of our most important leadership roles ✨ The difference between striving for perfection and pursuing excellence ✨ How Lisa's Sunday Basket® helps reduce mental clutter ✨ Why systems create freedom—not more work ✨ How trusting yourself can become your greatest leadership skill One of my favorite moments was Lisa's reminder that being the CEO doesn't mean doing everything yourself. It means stepping back, seeing the bigger picture, making thoughtful decisions, and creating systems that support everyone—including you. Whether you live alone, share your home with a partner, are raising children, caring for aging parents, or navigating an empty nest, this conversation offers practical wisdom for leading your life with greater intention and less overwhelm. 306. SOUND BITE: The Nature of Peace - What Changes When We Stop Looking Outward?

We all say we want peace. But what do we really mean? After my conversation with leadership coach and author Erika Alessandrini , I found myself reflecting on a question we never actually defined: What is the nature of peace? For much of my life, I thought peace was something waiting for me somewhere in the future—after the deadlines, after retirement, after life finally settled down. But what if peace isn't something we find? What if it's something we cultivate? In this Sound Bite, I explore what I've been learning about peace through my own life—from leaving corporate leadership, to creating art, to spending time with family, and discovering that perhaps peace isn't the absence of activity... It's the absence of inner conflict. Join me as we reflect on where peace really comes from and what changes when we stop looking outward for something that may already be growing within us. In this Sound Bite you'll explore: Why we often confuse peace with the absence of pressure The surprising places where peace quietly appears How striving can continue even after our circumstances change Why peace may be less about what's happening around us and more about what's happening within us One question to carry with you this week: What changes when we stop looking outward? 305. Pressure, Peace & the Hidden Cost of Always Being the Responsible One | Erika Alessandrini

Have you ever found yourself being the one everyone counts on? The one who says yes. The one who steps in. The one who carries the weight because you know you can. From the outside, it can look like strength. But what if the very qualities that helped you succeed are quietly costing you your peace? In this thought-provoking conversation, leadership coach, facilitator, and author Erika Alessandrini challenges one of the most celebrated qualities of high achievers: always being responsible. Drawing from her new book, Maybe It's Me: Looking Inward to Create Real Change Through Conscious Choices , Erika explains how the very beliefs that help us succeed can quietly erode our relationships, our well-being, and our peace. Together, we explore why pressure so often leads us toward control, why many women feel responsible for everyone around them, and how looking inward can transform the way we lead, love, and live. One of the most moving moments comes when Erika shares a deeply personal story about her teenage son—a story that became the catalyst for changing not only her leadership, but her life. In this episode, you'll discover: The difference between limiting beliefs and self-sabotaging beliefs Why high achievers often become trapped by over-responsibility and over-helping The hidden cost of always being "the responsible one" How pressure invites fear—and fear invites control Why compassionate curiosity can transform your relationships The power of creating a pause before reacting What it means to take 100% responsibility—no more and no less Why the people we love most deserve the best of us—not what's left of us Whether you're leading a business, caring for a family, or simply trying to create a life with greater intention, this conversation offers practical wisdom you'll carry long after the episode ends.
