From U.S. Army to College President | An Interview with Dr. Jeffrey Talley
Dr. Jeffrey Talley never planned to be the President of Belmont Abbey College in North Carolina. He assumed after spending 34 years in the U.S. Army and Army Reserve he would continue his civilian career in the corporate world leading organizations. However, God had other plans. Listening to Dr. Talley’s story reminded me of the importance of holding our plans loosely and trusting in God’s perfect plan for our lives. Dr. Talley is a Benedictine Oblate and lives out a rule of life seeking God through prayer and work. It was insightful to hear how he strives to bring order out of disorder in his daily work and to point others to Christ. Padre Pio and You | An Interview with Mary O'Regan
There are few saints in the world that have had the magnitude of impact as Padre Pio. Born in 1887 in Pietrelcina, Italy he later became a Capuchin friar, priest, stigmatist and mystic. He had the ability to read souls, bilocate and God worked many healings through him. During World War II, many allied pilots even saw him appear in front of their airplanes with arms outstretched, preventing them from bombing the town and monastery where he lived in San Giovanni Rotondo, Italy!Although I’ve always heard these remarkable stories about him and been in awe of his life, it wasn’t until I experienced an answered prayer through his intercession that made me realize how close the saints in heaven really are to us. This reality became even more profound when I read Mary O’Regan’s new book, “Padre Pio and You”, which details his incredible life and ministry. O’Regan is a gifted writer with a remarkable ability to draw readers into the story and feel like they are truly there. I felt like I was watching a movie each time I picked up her book and began to encounter the person of Padre Pio in a personal way. Mary’s own life story is fascinating and in this podcast episode she shares how she first met Padre Pio and the near-death experience she had that completely changed her life. This book is a true masterpiece and great testament to Padre Pio’s life. "The Divine Presence," An Interview with Susan Joy Bellavance
One of the things I enjoy about hosting this podcast is speaking with authors and learning what inspired them to write their books. For example, I was thrilled to learn that a miracle took place that led to author, Susan Joy Bellavance, being able to publish her new children’s book, “This Little Light of Thine”. The best part is the miracle involved a Nebraska priest and led Bishop Conley of the Diocese of Lincoln to endorse the book. “Newman for Our Time,” An Interview with Msgr. Laurence Spiteri
Would you describe yourself as a truth-seeker? Would you be willing to leave a religion you have always followed and a career that elevated you to the heights of prestige and influence because you found the truth?That was what Saint John Henry Newman (1801-1890) did to the shock and anger of many. His conversion from Anglicanism to Catholicism caused a religious and political stir in his day, and he lost many friends and family members in the process. However, he gained an eternal crown and a legacy that still reverberates in history over a century later.On November 1st, 2025, Newman was declared a Doctor of the Church due to his outstanding contribution to theology, education and critical topics such as the relationship between faith and reason and the critical nature of conscience. I first learned about him over 10 years ago after reading this touching quote of his:“God has created me to do Him some definite service. He has committed some work to me which He has not committed to another. I have my mission. I may never know it in this life, but I shall be told it in the next. I am a link in a chain, a bond of connection between persons.He has not created me for naught. I shall do good; I shall do His work. I shall be an angel of peace, a preacher of truth in my own place, while not intending it if I do but keep His commandments.Therefore, I will trust Him, whatever I am, I can never be thrown away. If I am in sickness, my sickness may serve Him, in perplexity, my perplexity may serve Him. If I am in sorrow, my sorrow may serve Him. He does nothing in vain. He knows what He is about. He may take away my friends. He may throw me among strangers. He may make me feel desolate, make my spirits sink, hide my future from me. Still, He knows what He is about.”― John Henry NewmanI had the absolute joy of speaking with Msgr. Laurence Spiteri about his new book, “Newman for Our Time” about St. John Henry Newman. Msgr. Spiteri is a priest of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, California and currently works in Rome as the Prelate Auditor of the Roman Rota at the Vatican and Commissioner of ratum-non-consumatum cases. He holds doctorates in biblical studies, psychology, and canon law, and a specialization in international law regarding the Church-state relationship.Not only is he knowledgeable about Newman’s life, but he is incredibly witty and had me laughing through parts of the interview. “The Apparitions of Jesus,” An Interview with Michael Lichens
One of the many things I love about being Catholic is reading the lives of the saints. Reading their varied stories always reminds me there are many paths to heaven and holiness isn’t cookie-cutter.One book that highlights this diversity is the “World of Jesus’ Apparitions” by Wincenty Laszewski, a Polish theologian. It is a beautiful compendium of Christ’s apparitions to various saints and mystics throughout history and around the world. However, it’s not a book that merely shares wild and fascinating stories about these holy men and women and their miraculous encounters with Jesus. Instead, reading each encounter felt a little like what I imagine the disciples felt on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:32). As I read each page, my heart burned with a renewed desire to be a saint, to love well and to suffer heroically. In this episode, I interview author Michael Lichens, who wrote the forward of the book about his major take-aways.I highly recommend this episode and this book if you are looking for a renewal to your faith through inspiring stories of men and women who went before us, some not too long ago. “Praying with Sacred Art,” An Interview with Derek Rotty
Every year when Advent comes around, I’m always at a loss as to how to live the season well. It arrives on the heels of Thanksgiving where I’m stuffed with good food and gratitude, and right before Christmas, forcing me to slow down when I want to rush right into decorating and snapping my fingers to “Jingle Bells”.This is why I was so thrilled to read Derek Rotty’s new book, “Praying with Sacred Art: Pondering the Mystery of Salvation through VISIO Divina”. Through this book, he walks through each of the liturgical seasons, beginning with Advent, using historic paintings as a form of prayer. It was a unique experience placing myself in these classic works of art and seeking to encounter Christ in the process. I highly recommend this book if you are looking for a good resource to help you fruitfully enter into the Advent season and beyond.Derek’s love of art and history is contagious, and I think you’ll enjoy listening to his description about certain artwork. “Spiritual Warfare Q&A,” An Interview with Dr. Dan Schneider
Have you ever read a book that stopped you in your tracks? A book that provided clarity and yet made you question past and present decisions? Even a book that left you with more questions and a greater yearning for truth than when you started?This was my recent experience after reading “Spiritual Warfare Q&A” by Dr. Dan Schneider and Jesse Romero. I underlined, Googled, texted my spiritual director, spoke extensively with my husband and prayed continuously about the topics in this book during and after reading this book. It was that impactful!Written in question-and-answer form, this book outlines topics such as exorcisms, deliverance ministry, the laying on of hands during prayer ministry, the occult, magic, horror films, yoga, haunted houses, Freemasonry, and much more.It is well researched and filled with anecdotes from real exorcisms. However, the book is not meant to glorify the work of the enemy, but to give readers a clear understanding of the reality of the spiritual realm and the battle for our souls. I know that might sound dramatic, but if you have ever been involved in any form of healing and deliverance prayer ministry or plan to be, I recommend you read this book. It will challenge what you know, enlighten you on what you may not know, and will leave you wanting to learn more. Dr. Schneider is a wealth of knowledge on these topics, and it was a joy to speak with him about this book. He regularly assists with exorcisms and is a founding member of Liber Christo, a movement in conjunction with Fr. Chad Ripperger, SMD which provides tools and resources for priests and laity working in the apostolate of exorcism.I’ll be honest, I’m still processing what I read in this book and discerning next steps and will continue to take it all to prayer. “I Will Come to You,” An Interview with Jamie McAleer
“Live in the mess.”This is my favorite lines from my conversation with Jamie McAleer, the author of the new book, "I Will Come to You: A Story of Adoption and the Relentless Love of God”. The book chronicles Jamie and her husband Jack’s journey to adopt their third child, Alexender, from Russia.It is a journey filled with twists and turns and many steps forward and backwards. I love Jamie’s honest sharing of her struggles to trust God in the process and how her faith was stretched throughout the experience. It is a heart-warming and encouraging read that will leave you feeling desired, chosen, wanted and loved by God. One fun fact that plays into the story is that Jamie and her husband Jack were major players in the growth of the Krispy Kreme dynasty! I won’t be mad if you feel like eating a donut after reading this book ;). Speaking to Jamie felt like sitting down to a warm cup of coffee with my grandmother.
