#207 We're Opening Soon - Here's What You Need to Know
In this episode, Jim introduces the concept of the four clocks — the Sun Clock, the Plant Clock, the Rumen Clock, and the Animal Clock — and explains why aligning these rhythms is the foundation of Total Grazing Academy. If your ranch has been feeling harder than it should, this episode is the clearest explanation yet of why that happens and what it means that enrollment is opening soon. #206 Why Some Ranches Move Ahead While Others Stay Stuck
Two ranchers. Same area. Same grass. Same cattle. Same size ranch. Yet ten years later, one operation feels stronger, calmer, and more resilient. The other feels tired. The difference is rarely about working harder. Most of the time, the ranch that stays stuck is caught in a pattern of reacting instead of observing, forcing instead of aligning, and solving symptoms instead of solving the system. In this episode, I share what I have seen across many ranches, dairies, and grazing systems over the years. I talk about why doing more of what is not working only creates more dependency. I talk about why timing matters as much as where cattle graze. And I share the story of a rancher who had tried everything, yet the answer turned out to be simpler than he ever imagined. If your ranch feels harder every year despite your best efforts, this episode is for you. Because very often, the ranch is not asking for more pressure. It is asking for more alignment. And when we begin to observe more carefully, that kind of ranch is often much closer than we think. #205 How to Tell If Your Land Is Just Getting By
One of the biggest mistakes we make is assuming that if the ranch looks green, the ranch must be healthy. I used to think that too. Most of us do.But there were little signs everywhere that the land and the animals were surviving rather than thriving. And once you begin to see those signs, you start to realize something important: The health of a ranch is not measured by whether it still works. It is measured by how much life, resilience, and margin still remain inside the system. The difficult part is learning how to recognize the difference. #204 Why Good Grazing Practices Still Fall Short
There is something I have noticed over and over again through the years. I meet ranchers who are doing many things right. They are rotating pastures. They are trying to leave more residual. They are fencing more paddocks. They are improving water. They are trying to increase recovery periods. They are moving cattle more often. They are working harder than ever to improve their land. And yet, despite all of that, many of them still feel disappointed. #203 The Ranch as Legacy — Building a Better Environment for Future Generations
Over time, something begins to change. We start looking at the ranch differently. We look at a pasture and we no longer see only this year's grazing. We begin to imagine what that pasture might look like ten years from now. We think about whether the soil is becoming deeper or thinner. We wonder whether the land is becoming more resilient or more fragile. We ask ourselves if our children or grandchildren will inherit something better than what we received. And perhaps most importantly, we begin to ask a deeper question: What kind of environment am I creating here? #202 Why I Now Recommend One Move a Day in Total Grazing
Friend, I was recently asked a question that surprised me a little. Someone said, "Jim, you spent years teaching multiple moves a day. Why do you now recommend moving cattle once a day?" That is a fair question. And honestly, if you had asked me that ten years ago, I probably would have argued strongly for more moves. Because for a long time, that is exactly what I believed. I believed that if one move was good, then three must be better. And if three was good, then five had to be even better. After all, that was what we were all trying to do. We were trying to improve grazing. We were trying to get cattle to eat more evenly. We were trying to waste less grass. We were trying to grow more beef or more milk from the same acres. And I have spent my whole life trying to solve that problem. #201 You Don't Need a Bigger Ranch — You Need a Different Conversation With Your Grass
What if the biggest limitation on most ranches isn't land size… isn't cattle numbers… and isn't even the weather? What if it's simply the way we've learned to look at grass? Over the years I've walked ranches in many places — dry country, humid country, cold regions, and warm landscapes — and I've noticed something that surprised me. #200 The Day I Realized Timing Matters More Than Effort on a Ranch
Have you ever had a season where you worked harder than ever — moved cattle more, planned more, paid more attention — and yet the ranch still felt slightly out of sync? Not failing. Not falling apart. Just… heavier than it should be. For years I believed effort was the answer to almost everything on a ranch. Until one day I realized something uncomfortable: Sometimes the land doesn't need more effort… It needs better timing. I want to talk about that today. Because for many years, I believed effort was the most important ingredient behind success on a ranch.
