Observation No. 13 - The WORLD Beneath Our Feet

In a grassland in Alberta, Canada, someone showed me several circles in the grass. Everyone knew what they were called. But when I asked why they were there, the answers became less certain. So I borrowed a screwdriver. I pushed it into the soil inside one of the circles. It went in easily. Then I tried again outside. The soil responded completely differently. Why? At the time, I didn't have an answer. Years later, green patches in a pasture in New Zealand caught my attention. And much later, in Texas, another piece of the same mystery appeared. The next time you see a road cut exposing the soil, look closely. You may notice something strange. A darker layer near the surface... and then a boundary where that darkness seems to end. Why? For years, I observed differences like these without fully understanding what they meant. Observation No. 10 - Nature cooperates before she competes

For many years, I thought I knew why the great herds of Africa migrated. It seemed obvious. Predators forced them to move. Lions. Hyenas. Danger. But there was a problem. A chase may last only minutes. A migration can cross entire regions. Then a question appeared that I couldn't ignore: If there was still vegetation available... why did some animals leave while others stayed? And then an even stranger question appeared: If they were all walking across the same savanna... were they really seeing the same food? That question took me back to something I had personally observed in Tanzania in 1985.
