In a special episode, energy policy whisperer Nick Butler takes some time to talk to E-FWD editor Ed Reed on the limits of UK energy thinking. Nick thinks there's scope for politicians to work together for a greater good, with a plea for pragmatism. Ed takes a more pessimistic view, maintaining that the current division of responsibilities makes such a move impossible.
The UK government announced payments of £250 a year over a decade for those living within 500m of new pylons, but is this a bribe? The decision came amid pushback from locals regarding the ramp up of transmission infrastructure, the need for this infrastructure and the benefits the energy transition will bring need to be weighed up. This week, the UK readied itself for a change at number 10 and Andy Burnham is set to take over as Labour leader. This prompted demands from industry regarding how he should approach the energy sector. In this episode of Energy Voice Out Loud, Aberdeen features lead Ryan Duff is joined by renewables reporter Michael Behr and North West correspondent Floyd March. Up first, the trio discuss the prospect of Burnham's Britian after Unite the Union tentatively backed him and two demands were made from industry. Early in the week, OEUK signed a letter with 13 other organisations demanding Westminster backing for domestic oil and gas production. Additionally, the Confederation of British Industry and Energy UK urged the incumbent PM to reduce energy bills for companies. But will Burnham make the desired changes, and can he without radically departing from the manifesto Labour was elected under? Next, ScotWind is back in the headlines as it was revealed that only 30% of spending from 16 projects that secured leases in 2022 is going to firms in Scotland. Manufacturing proved to be where the domestic supply chain was slipping, although there are no shortage of firms that have made commitments to start building, if they get orders. So that begs the question, what is the missing link between developers who have the ambition to use domestic manufacturing and the firms looking to deliver it? Finally, our journalists take a closer look at the track 1 and 2 winning projects after Floyd spent the day at an event regarding HyNet. The North West-based carbon capture storage site is looking to rely heavily on local engagement while the Northern Endurance Partnership is partnering with an upcoming power plant that will be its ket emitter partner. But what about track 2? Viking received £65.5 million from Westminster this week to support the project to final investment decision, but Acorn is still waiting for Storegga to find a buyer for its stake in the Scottish CCS project. This week, shadow energy secretary Claire Coutinho lambasted a “scandal” within NESO after she claimed senior managers had ordered operators to hide how close the gird was to failing last month. Next, Micheal talks us through the rules for the next allocation round (AR). This week the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ) announced the strike price ceilings for the various technologies that are able to take part in AR8. Deepwater wind was added to the same pot as floating and this has led to a debate as to whether this technology will be the hot new thing in UK waters. Also, the trio of reporters ask if the AR scheme is still fit for purpose and what should replace it if not. Finally, Ryan asks if all that cash that is set to be spend on UK North Sea decommissioning is finally set to be delivered. Developing a new export market remains the hardest, most expensive way for businesses to grow. After finding and establishing relationships with reliable partners and navigating risks involving new legal and payment systems, it can take firms up to three to four years to see a return on investment. But that return is also worth it: “The truth is the best companies in the world, those that have the highest revenues, the highest revenue growth, the highest profits pay their people best, the ones that last longest are global businesses,” says Energy Industries Council (EIC) CEO Stuart Broadley.He was speaking to Energy Voice news editor Erikka Askeland on this special edition of Energy Voice Out Loud. This week CNOOC revealed production figures for its UK assets in a document that painted a "gloomy" picture of the operator's future in the North Sea, according to one analyst. The son of David Gorman, a safety office who died during the Piper Alpha disaster 38 years ago, has written a book about how the North Sea's darkest day has shaped his life. Published on the anniversary of the last day Shane saw his father, the book was launched on Thursday 2 July. This week Women in New Energy returned to Aberdeen for the fourth consecutive year. The event hosted a range of conversations regarding the importance of diversity in the energy industry and was kicked off by a keynote speech by Renewable UK's recently appointed CEO Tara Singh.
