Dr Asher Sefanit-Wudasee, your podcast host, is an experienced employment rights advocate, having spent 25 years working with trade unions whilst also serving as an Employment Tribunal Lay Judge. Dr Asher delves into these subjects from the point of view of all types of employees and workers! #341: When The Unthinkable Happens… You May Qualify For Bereaved Parents Leave!

In this week’s episode, we are talking about what happens with the mother or primary carer of your newborn baby passes away and the how the new Bereaved Partner’s Paternity Leave can help you to manage this life-changing situation. Breaved Partner’s Paternity Leave or BPPL, is a day one employment right... providing up to 52 weeks... of unpaid leave from 6th April 2026. To get this leave depends on your relationship to the child and to the primary carer who passed away and depends on you taking up the main responsibility for the child's care. And if you qualify for this leave, the leave must be taken as one continuous block - within 52 weeks of the birth or adoption of the child. This week, we look at a case where an employee who thought he could simply search his employer’s records to find and download sensitive information about people in his own family. We look at what happened to this employee when a company audit trail revealed what he had done, and we also look at your employment rights and obligations under the Computer Misuse Act (1990) and UK GDPR and Data Protection Act (2018). The simple message from this week’s information, is ‘DON’T DO IT’!
