180. “We Are Learning”: What Opening a Yoga Studio Taught a Former New York Lawyer | Kate Boyd, Kali Yoga Buffalo, NY
What does it take to open a yoga studio with zero business experience? In this episode of Employee to Boss, I sit down with Kate Boyd, a former New York lawyer who made a career change in her 60s and co-founded Kali Yoga Buffalo in Buffalo, New York.Kate spent years as a confidential law clerk in the New York State court system and prosecuted attorney misconduct before stepping away from law to raise her four kids. A knee injury from the Buffalo Half Marathon led her to her first hot yoga class (after driving to the studio three times before she had the nerve to walk in). That practice turned into teacher trainings, years of teaching, and eventually a yoga studio of her own.Just over three months after opening their doors, Kate and her business partner Jen are building a community-first wellness space in a renovated former mattress warehouse. We talk about the real costs and surprises of starting a small business, why the right business partner matters, and how to keep going when you’re learning everything as you go. In this episode, we talk about: Changing careers from lawyer to yoga teacher to business owner How to start a yoga studio: permits, state and city certificates, leasing, and a full build-out Surprise startup costs, like music licensing fees and a utility bill three times higher than expected Why “we are learning” is the best mindset for new business owners Choosing a business partner whose strengths are the opposite of yours Designing a studio space people actually want to be in, down to the paint and the transom windows Building community: a $5 Sunday community class, a local bulletin board, workshops, and events Offering heated and unheated classes, including mat Pilates, yin, meditation, and dance Standing out in a crowded yoga market without competing on price Marketing a new studio on Instagram without hiring an agency What a nerve-wracking (and deeply moving) grand opening week looks like The story behind the name Kali and how they approached it respectfully Starting a business in your 60s and staying open to where the path leads Connect with Kate and Kali Yoga Buffalo: Website: KaliYogaBuffalo.com Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/kaliyogabuffalo If this episode got you thinking about the leap you’ve been putting off, share it with a friend who needs the nudge. -- how to open a yoga studio, career change at 60, lawyer career change, starting a business later in life, women entrepreneurs, yoga studio owner, Buffalo NY yoga, small business lessons
