#141 You Can Love AI and Still Not Hand It the Keys, with Dr Lollie Mancey
This summer, AI agents got around the security at Hugging Face while chasing the answer to a test. If that has you worried, you're paying attention. It's also the reason the foundations come before the autonomy. You can be excited about what AI can do and still not be ready to hand it the keys. So when the headlines started sounding like Terminator, I went back to Dr Lollie Mancey, anthropologist, futurist and innovation provocateur, who joined me in May 2025 for Episode 109. A lot has happened since. I wanted her read on what actually happened at Hugging Face, how worried we should be, what AI costs the planet, and what all of it means for your business. What You'll Walk Away With See what happened at Hugging Face, and why an AI given a goal finds a way to reach it Ask the one question that matters before you give any AI more access or autonomy Hear why the generation behind us is stepping away from AI, and where the environmental argument really stands Spot why people can use AI every day while the business sees little change Decide who owns the time AI saves you, and what you do with it Start with a free course that builds your AI literacy before you set your own boundaries In This Episode Dr Lollie takes us through the Hugging Face incident and says it is a bigger question than cybersecurity. Give a machine an objective and it will find a way to achieve it, including ways nobody intended. She doesn't read it as proof that AI is malicious. She reads it as goal-driven behaviour, and the question she asks is whether we've built a system that can detect it, contain it and correct it, and whether humans are overseeing that. We also talk about whether you can give an AI morals when humans can't agree on them, and what happens when agents start working as a collective. We turn to the generation behind us, many of whom want nothing to do with AI. Lollie calls them the analog generation and sees a pendulum swinging back. On the environment, she lays out what AI demands in energy and infrastructure, argues for renewables and for answers on who receives the benefit and who bears the cost, and says walking away is not enough of an answer. She also points to the University of Helsinki's free Elements of AI course as the place to start. Then we get to business. Lollie describes a cultural lag: people are using the tools, but the way work is organised hasn't caught up. If you save ten hours a week with AI, who owns those ten hours? She shares the example of a housing charity where AI takes the easy calls and the human gets the heaviest ones. I tell the story of the day I decided to replace myself with AI, and what it made space for. Lollie closes where I'd want you to land: "I am optimistic, but I'm not optimistic without scrutiny."
