E.219 What If the Thing You Started Small Is Meant to Become Something Bigger? | Qiana Williams
What if the business you’re building today is only the beginning of what it could become? Qiana Williams didn’t start Axiom Kitchen with a massive business plan or a vision of producing events for thousands of people. It started as a six month experiment with her husband and a really good brisket. Then they kept saying yes to what came next. In this episode of Your Business on Purpose , Qiana joins me to share how Axiom Kitchen grew into multiple ventures, including Axiom Productions, Noah’s Ark Foundation, and the Long Beach Barbecue Festival, which has grown from approximately 800 attendees its first year to more than 13,000. But what I love about this conversation is that we don’t just talk about what worked. We talk about the mistakes, too. Qiana shares what she learned about understanding cost of goods, expenses, pricing, revenue and profit, and why making money does not necessarily mean your business is actually making money. We also talk about building as a woman in male dominated industries, collaboration over competition, finding opportunities where other people see gaps, and the tremendous amount of work that happens behind the scenes of something that looks successful from the outside. And then we go deeper. Qiana shares how losing her son Noah and remembering his encouragement to build something for herself helped shape the impact she wanted her businesses to have. That purpose eventually became part of the foundation for Noah’s Ark Foundation and its work supporting families experiencing homelessness. One of the biggest lessons from this conversation is simple: Your past does not get to decide your future. You can choose differently. You can reinvent yourself. You can build something you never imagined when you first started. And sometimes the little thing you are working on today becomes the foundation for something much bigger tomorrow.
