E194: Do You Know How to Belong Without Being Useful?

Send us Fan Mail Episode 194: Do You Know How to Belong Without Being Useful? What is it costing you to have nowhere in your life where you are not required to be useful? In this episode of Uncharted & Unfiltered: A Journey Back to You , Cynthia explores why highly capable leaders often struggle to pause, protect their capacity, and act on what they already know. Through a personal decision to walk instead of run and two anonymized coaching conversations, she reveals why the block is not always a lack of information. Sometimes, it is a lack of space, language, safety, or permission. You’ll hear: Why changing your mind can be evidence that you are finally listening How the same pause can feel luxurious, unfamiliar, or unsafe Why capable leaders interpret systemic overload as personal failure How usefulness becomes the “rent” we believe we owe for belonging Why insight alone cannot change what the body learned through experience What it means to contribute without disappearing Your capability is not the problem. The goal is not to become less caring, generous, or useful. It is to become free enough to choose when, where, why, and for whom you use your gifts. Join Cynthia at Porch Light Porch Light is a free, live, one-hour gathering inside the Be the Light community for leaders, caregivers, high-achievers, and deeply conscientious people who need somewhere they are not required to lead, fix, produce, or prove. E193: What If Listening Is the Brave Part?

Send us Fan Mail What if the bravest thing you did today wasn't speaking up, but listening — really listening — to what's already happening inside you? In this episode, I share why the sentence "my body knew before my beautiful brain did" has followed me for years, and what happened in a coaching session when a client's single word — "annoyed" — became a doorway instead of a problem to fix. We talk about the difference between regulating our emotions and building a relationship with them, why every feeling carries information (even when it isn't telling the truth), and what it might look like to trust yourself again. Plus, a personal update on where I am in my thesis journey — and an invitation to join me this Thursday at The Porch Light. Support the show Please rate and review with your honest opinion. E192: Stop Digging Up The Roots

Send us Fan Mail You know the moment: you set a boundary, send the email, start the hard conversation, then your brain demands immediate proof that it worked. You refresh the inbox, reread texts for tone, scan someone’s mood, and call it “being responsible” while your body feels anything but calm. We’re naming that pattern for what it is: digging up the roots before anything has time to grow. I share a recent coaching story that starts with an employee engagement survey and ends somewhere much deeper. The real issue is not the survey results, it is the hidden belief that we must manage other people’s feelings and protect ourselves from disappointment. From there, we break down one of the most useful distinctions in leadership development and self-trust: care versus control. Care prepares the soil by creating clarity, honesty, compassion, and safety. Control tries to force tomatoes to grow by chasing certainty and needing everyone to leave feeling a specific way. Then we shift into a cleaner, steadier way to lead: agency over responsibility. Agency keeps your focus on what you can control, your integrity, your listening, your contribution, and helps you release what was never yours to hold, like someone else’s reaction or choice. You’ll leave with a simple practice to build the muscle of trust: a 48-hour no-checking window that reduces anxiety, strengthens boundaries, and makes your leadership feel grounded. If this hits home, subscribe, share the episode with a friend who overchecks like you do, and leave a review so more people can find the path from control to self-trust. E191: You Can Change Your Life One Small Choice At A Time

Send us Fan Mail Burnout is not always dramatic. Sometimes it looks like skipped breaks, a constant tight chest, snapping at people you love, and telling yourself you’ll rest after the next deadline. We wanted a grounded conversation about what actually helps, so we brought on life coach and Human Design practitioner Mary Okon to share the practices that helped her move from corporate burnout, daily migraines, and chronic pain into a healthier, more sustainable way of living and leading. We talk about why self-care can feel uncomfortable or even “wrong,” especially if you grew up in a work-first culture where taking time for yourself was judged. Mary breaks down how to start small, build trust with yourself through tiny choices, and use your focus intentionally so you stop reinforcing a loop of stress and complaints. We also get practical about leadership and authenticity: how to find safe spaces to practice being yourself, how community reduces isolation at the top, and how to become an observer of your reactions so you can respond with intention next time. Then we bring in Human Design as a self-awareness tool for leadership development, energy management, and decision making. Mary explains how people are wired differently, why some thrive on variety and movement while others need more rest, and how alignment signals, such as satisfaction or frustration, can guide your next step. If you’ve been forcing yourself into someone else’s “right way,” this conversation offers a clear permission slip to work with your nature instead of against it. If this resonates, follow the podcast, share it with a friend who needs a real break, and leave a review so more people can find it. E190: Awareness Without Choice Is Regret

Send us Fan Mail You already know the truth. The question is—are you willing to respond to it? In this episode, I explore the uncomfortable space between knowing something and actually doing something about it. Through a recent experience with my own health, I realized how often we override what we already know—not because we lack insight, but because we haven't made a conscious choice about how to respond. We'll unpack: Why awareness alone doesn't create change The difference between waiting and self-abandonment How to know when it's time to act versus time to pause What self-trust actually looks like in practice The PACT Framework and where you might be stuck within it If you've ever wondered why you keep ignoring what you already know, this one's for you. 🎧 Listen now, then tell me: What truth has been tapping you on the shoulder? E189: The Decision Before the Decision

Send us Fan Mail Nearly half of us want to change something about our lives, yet most of us do not move. I have been there, and this personal talk is my clearest look at why. Recorded as a TEDx-style origin story during an intensive spiritual direction programme and an 8-day retreat in India led by Dr. Ricci-Jane Adams, it captures the unpolished, human side of leadership: the nerves, the pauses, and the moment truth lands in your body before your brain can explain it. I take you back to the season when I was an HR professional with decades of experience, working at the world’s largest nuclear power plant, while also coaching leaders across 19 countries. On paper, it looked like security and success. Inside, I felt split. One part of me was performing and proving; another part came alive every evening in the work that felt like calling. Then a return-to-office policy change hit my inbox and turned a quiet discomfort into a real crossroads: choose comfort and certainty, or choose aliveness and expansion. Along the way, I share the idea that pressure is not always a problem; it is often information that you are out of alignment. We explore why awareness without choice keeps leaders stuck, what fear of losing identity and belonging really does to decision-making, and why self-trust is usually quiet. The core takeaway is simple and demanding: leadership is congruence, living what you say you value, even when it is not perfect. If a decision keeps circling in your mind, let this be a mirror. Listen, then subscribe, share with someone who needs a nudge back to themselves, and leave a review so more people can find this path of authenticity and self-trust. E188: Why Did I Wait? A dream, a pen, and a lesson in self-trust.

Send us Fan Mail Nobody is actually stopping you, and that can be both freeing and confronting. I start with a dream that left me thinking about a familiar kind of stuckness many high-performing leaders live with: the sense that you’re under constant pressure, even when the external facts don’t fully explain the weight you feel. The shift that matters is simple but profound: pressure exists, but suffering often comes from what we add to it, the stories, expectations, proving, and the need to get it right. From there, I unpack how waiting becomes a leadership trap. Waiting for the promotion, the title, the invitation, recognition, certainty, or validation. I share a coaching story where a “typical” timeline quietly turns into an identity, and how a small realization can break the spell: an opinion doesn’t have to become your reality. That’s where inner authority starts to come back online, and where leadership begins to feel grounded again. Then we move into two metaphors that tie everything together: the pen and the microphone. The pen asks, who is writing your story? The microphone asks, are you willing to use your voice even while fear sits beside you? We define ambiguity, uncertainty, and fear, and why real leadership development isn’t about eliminating them, it’s about building self-trust that holds steady in their presence. If you’ve been outsourcing your knowing, this is your reminder: the mic is already on. Subscribe, share this with a leader who needs it, and leave a review if it resonates. E187: Why High Performers Feel Disconnected Inside

Send us Fan Mail You can be the person everyone relies on and still feel strangely far away from yourself. That quiet disconnection is what we’re naming today: not a breakdown you can point to, but the slow drift that happens when you keep overriding your own needs to stay capable, helpful, and “fine”. We start with a dream that captures an energetic truth many of us sense but rarely say out loud: billions of people functioning, performing, and producing while feeling internally detached. From there, we unpack the patterns that often show up in high-performing leaders and caretakers. If you stabilise everyone else but can’t feel grounded, if you keep searching for answers outside yourself, or if you’ve become exceptional at functioning while losing touch with what you feel, you’re not weak. You may be exhausted from self-abandonment, a learned survival strategy that workplaces and cultures often reward. We also reframe burnout and high performance through a new lens. Sometimes burnout isn’t just overwork, it’s your body drawing a boundary and saying it can’t keep paying the internal cost of constant overfunctioning. The heart of the conversation is rebuilding self-trust and inner authority. Self-trust isn’t certainty or the perfect plan. It’s staying connected to yourself in the mess, pausing long enough to ask what’s true right now, and making one honest choice at a time. If this lands, subscribe, share with someone who’s carrying too much, and leave a review so more people can find their way back to themselves. E186: Reiki, Self-Trust, And Building Real Capacity with Lori Ogden

Send us Fan Mail Your life can look successful on paper and still feel misaligned in your body. That tension is what we’re naming out loud with Lori Ogden, a mother, Reiki and wellness practitioner, and corporate professional who understands what it’s like to carry a lot while trying to stay connected to yourself. We talk about inner knowing and why it isn’t mysterious or reserved for “spiritual” people. It’s the quiet signal underneath the noise, and when we ignore it, we often default to overworking, people-pleasing, and patterns that repeat. Lori shares how self-trust grows through small, consistent choices and how mindfulness can be as simple as noticing what your thoughts are doing during a meal, a meeting, or a hard conversation at home. We also get practical about nervous system regulation and energy healing. Lori explains what Reiki is, what a practitioner actually does, and how this kind of support can create clarity, shift reactive behaviour, and help you lead with more steadiness. We dig into fear versus intuition, self-sabotage, and the way grief and unprocessed emotion can show up in your work, relationships, and confidence if you keep pushing it away. E185: The Subconscious Basement (and Why I Take You There Anyway)

Send us Fan Mail Most leaders I meet do not have a competence problem. They have a pressure problem and it is being powered by something older, quieter, and more persuasive than any plan on your calendar. When you keep telling yourself to delegate more, speak up more, or get more strategic, but nothing truly changes, it may be because you are trying to fix the main floor while the basement runs the house. I walk you into what I call the subconscious basement: the part of the subconscious mind that stores what feels safe, what feels risky, and who you believe you need to be to stay okay. We unpack how outdated beliefs can show up as micromanaging, overexplaining, holding back in meetings, or driving yourself and your team at a cost you cannot sustain. You will hear concrete leadership examples, plus the key insight that hits hard: the very behaviours you use for safety can create the overwhelm, low accountability, or invisibility you are trying to escape. We also dig into the saboteur framework and why I listen for the protector behind the pattern. That controller or hyperachiever is not a flaw, it is protection and once you see what it is trying to prevent, you can finally choose a new response. I share how my free saboteur discovery session works (book yours here ), and learn about how deeper intuitive, somatic-style guidance can help you meet fear without getting swallowed by it, so your intuition sharpens and your decisions get clean. If you want leadership that creates results without burning you out, press play, share this with a leader who feels stuck, and subscribe, rate, and review so more people can find the work.
