Live Life Peacefully: A Mother's Impossible Choice

At 10 years old, Karina lost her dad in a sudden accident with no support and no roadmap. Decades later, she would face something unimaginably worse — the loss of her daughter Sophie to a drowning accident, complicated by epilepsy and a seizure that came without warning on a Sunday afternoon while Karina was at the supermarket. What followed is one of the most extraordinary stories of grief, purpose, and deliberate resilience you will ever hear. Within hours of Sophie being declared brain dead, Karina chose to donate Sophie's organs — a decision made in 30 seconds that went on to save at least 10 lives. She then channelled every ounce of that loss into building something that would outlast her pain: The Sophie Effect, a children's grief program; a mentoring network for bereaved parents; speaking engagements from the Sunshine Coast Lightning netball team to 800-person forums; and eventually, a solo trek to Everest Base Camp carrying Sophie's ashes — nearly dying on the mountain before scattering them at the summit. This episode is raw, deeply honest, and filled with real strategies for surviving the unsurvivable. Karina doesn't just talk about grief — she shows you what it looks like to choose your way through it, one controlled decision at a time.00:00 Accident Aftermath Tease03:03 Podcast Welcome Intro03:55 Karina Background Legacy08:19 Epilepsy Early Seizures12:07 Pool Day Turns Tragic16:29 Hospital ICU Reality22:28 Brain Death Decision23:38 Organ Donation Choice31:13 Celebrating Sophies Life33:21 Living Life Peacefully38:37 Pushing Limits Everest40:31 Dangerous Roads Alone46:54 Bridges Panic Breakthrough50:52 Mindful Trek Beginnings51:22 Sacred Waters Lesson52:34 Unprocessed Grief Opens53:47 Monastery Tears Shift55:04 Altitude Sickness Fight57:30 Base Camp Farewell Ritual58:39 Donate Life Awareness01:01:37 Hospital Scare Aftermath01:04:34 Mentoring Through Grief01:06:38 Practical Dark Day Tools01:08:47 Letting Go Of Blame01:12:55 Senses And Control01:18:53 The Sophie Effect Mission01:21:25 Programs Awards Legacy01:26:05 Work Speaking New Projects01:29:12 Choice Legacy Closing

Her Mother's Last Words "I Don't Love You"

On the Tomorrow Is Not Today Podcast, Kingsley interviews Donna Martin, a Northern Ireland “Derry girl,” mom of three, burnout specialist, mentor, and speaker behind The Good Life Approach. Donna recounts growing up amid violence during The Troubles and being bullied after her mother left on Christmas Eve when she was four and a half, shaping years of feeling like an outsider, seeking identity through religion, then drink, drugs, and poor choices. Encouraged by two women, she pursued nursing, then faced severe antisocial harassment and death threats after buying a flat unknowingly near a drug den, leading to breakdown, bankruptcy, and a pivotal moment of spiritual guidance. After depression, a move to Australia, marriage, and further family traumas including a car accident, she refocused her work on burnout and teaches “pause, check, reset” to intentionally define and live one’s version of the good life for individuals and organizations.Chapters:00:00 Christmas Eve Abandonment00:47 Choosing the Good Life01:26 Meet Donna Martin03:11 Growing Up in Derry07:17 Mother Leaves Home12:08 Outsider and Bullying20:31 Teen Years Searching25:59 Rock Bottom Inside27:49 The Secret and Nursing30:14 Mentors Who Believed37:14 New Nurse New Nightmare39:20 Rave Outside Home41:24 Harassment Escalates43:23 Community Watch Backlash44:22 Threats And Escape45:41 Bankruptcy And Breakdown47:40 Bondi Park Sign49:42 Judge Sets Her Free53:18 From Trauma To Perth58:07 Coaching Catalyst59:10 Car Crash Reframes Work01:01:57 Burnout Signs Explained01:02:36 Pause Check Reset Method01:09:29 Programs And Who She Helps01:11:20 Legacy And ClosingConnect with DonnaDonna Martin - Burnout Specialist | Mentor | SpeakerHttps://instagram.com/thegoodlifeapproach Https://facebook.com/goodlifeapproachHttps://linkedin.com/in/thegoodlifeapproachHttps://youtube.com/@the-goodlife-approach

Why Good Girls Choose Abusers

On the Tomorrow Is Not Today Podcast, Kingsley interviews Caroline Clarke, an ex-police officer and trauma therapist who works with women worldwide who sense something is wrong in their lives or relationships but lack language for it. Clarke explains how early childhood (0–7) encodes a “blueprint” of people-pleasing and self-abandonment that can attract controlling partners, and shares vivid memories of protecting her mother during alcohol-fueled violence, creating hypervigilance and silence. She describes how the body stores trauma, recounting a panic response en route to a knife-point hostage call that later connected to a forgotten childhood knife incident, and discusses fight/flight/freeze, breathing, shaking, and asking “How old am I?” She outlines boundaries, red flags, emotional/coercive control, and rebuilding self-trust, plus her No More Silence foundation, her book Breaking the Good Girl Code, and her Miss Australia Legacy International mission.00:00 Childhood Terror Memory01:31 Meet Caroline Clark02:44 Breaking the Good Girl Code04:22 Blueprints From Early Years06:46 Three Year Old Protector11:03 Narcissistic Control And Survival14:00 Body Keeps The Score15:12 Police Panic And Flashback19:27 Grounding In The Moment21:30 Fight Flight Freeze Explained24:25 Anger Triggers In Public26:41 Deescalation And Trauma Roles29:50 Bravery And Police Insights33:06 Freeze Versus Fight Patterns35:13 Fight or Freeze Patterns36:01 Gender Roles and Conditioning36:49 Breaking Relationship Blueprints39:26 Her Story Emotional Abuse40:54 Empty Fridge Analogy43:09 Breadcrumb Cycles and Promises47:59 Red Flags and Loneliness50:48 Rebuilding Self Trust52:44 Boundaries in Dating56:51 Reparenting the Inner Child59:05 Parenting Through Trauma01:02:55 No More Silence Mission01:05:50 Legacy and Where to Find Her

She Shouldn’t Be Here… But She Is

On the Tomorrow’s Not Today podcast, Kingsley interviews Sally Jones about her lived experience of child abuse, complex PTSD, addiction risks, and the ongoing work of healing, and how she turned that trauma into a child protection education program after 20 years as a teacher. She describes gaps in school-based prevention, lack of repetition, unsustainable one-off visits, and outdated “stranger danger” messaging and argues kids need skills for real-life encounters with perpetrators, who may be family, peers, or anyone. Grounded in attachment theory, her online, interactive program teaches grooming behaviours, boundaries, and self-trust by noticing body signals, and includes “champions” (trusted adults) plus an in-program “switch” that alerts a designated school contact to support mandatory reporting. The conversation also addresses adult recognition of abuse, trauma’s effects on relationships and emotional regulation, imposter syndrome, and seeking professional help and trusted support.00:00 Trigger Warning and Reality01:29 Podcast Welcome and Purpose03:04 Why Schools Need Better Protection04:57 Attachment Theory and Safety06:21 Her Story Childhood Trauma08:15 Nursing Forensics and PTSD11:26 Choosing Change Drugs and Alcohol15:12 Moving to Australia and Healing16:55 Program Teaches Grooming and Boundaries19:35 Champions and The Safety Switch23:23 Trauma Informed Schools and Policy24:37 Adults Healing and Recognition28:03 Living With Trauma Daily29:00 Trauma Never Leaves30:55 Choosing Your Next Step31:25 One Small Action Daily32:05 Legacy And Overwhelm33:26 Beating Imposter Syndrome36:07 Trauma Informed Practice37:40 Tenacity And Setbacks39:25 Retraumatization And Memories40:26 Reach Out For Help44:20 Masking And Fear49:13 Understanding And Body Memory51:54 Create Life And Legacy

She Survived the Unspeakable

On the Tomorrow’s Not Today podcast, Kingsley interviews Kerrie Atherton—wife, mother, grandmother, jazz musician, mental health advocate, addiction counsellor, author, podcaster, board director with Mentoring Men Australia, and ambassador for Fearless PTSD—about how childhood trauma and addiction shaped her purpose. Kerrie describes growing up with alcoholism, bipolar disorder in her mother, early traumatic events, bullying by a teacher, sexual assault by a pedophile, later rape, substance misuse, suicidality, and a near-fatal overdose. At 18, after planning to end her life and hearing a voice telling her not to, she returned to Alcoholics Anonymous and has been sober for 44 years. She discusses acceptance, delusion/denial in addiction, “54” negative consequences across love, livelihood, liver, and law, and the need for families to detach without enabling. You're not broken, you're being built

This spoken word metaphor of a seed becoming a flower to argue that what feels like an ending may be the beginning. It describes being buried in darkness and loneliness, then breaking through to light and encountering cycles of storms, heat, and wind that strengthen roots and growth. The pain of change, including “pruning” and shedding old protection, is framed as preparation rather than punishment, creating space for new buds and a greater purpose. The message emphasises trusting the process of life’s seasons, enduring hardship, and recognising that suffering can shape strength and beauty that impacts others—sometimes immediately, sometimes years later. It concludes that even the end of a season returns to the ground not in defeat but as nourishment for future generations, forming a lasting legacy.00:00 Buried or Planted?
