Will I Run Out of Money?

Somewhere in your mind there’s a question that gets louder at night. Will the money last as long as I do? If that’s been sitting with you, you’re not alone. Many of us women over 50 carry some version of it, often quietly, often while the rest of our life looks fine from the outside. The first time I booked a trip I’d dreamed about for years, I sat on my porch staring at the ocean, unable to move, wondering if I had just cost myself my future. Here’s what I’ve learned about this fear. It rarely comes from one number. It comes from not knowing what the number is for. When you can’t see what you need, what you have and what you’re afraid of blur into one big worry. So the first move isn’t to decide anything. It’s to separate two things: What you know. The amounts you can see, the income you can count on, the expenses you actually pay. What you’re imagining. The worst case, the “what if,” the future you haven’t checked against any facts. Write both down, on separate lines, for ten minutes. You’ll be surprised how often the imagined column is bigger than the known one. Then ask one question: What would I need to see to feel steady about this, for the next year? That question isn’t a plan. It’s a way to turn a vague fear into something you can look at. The answer might be a single statement, or a meeting with a qualified professional, or simply permission to wait another month before deciding anything. Fear about money often gets more bearable once it has edges. You don’t have to solve the whole thing today. This is education and personal reflection, not financial, legal, or tax advice.
