266. Lessons from Rich Dad

Today's episode is a bittersweet reflection on the business lessons Jake learned from his father-in-law, Dennis Sadelson, on the one-year anniversary of his death. Lesson 1 – Become a Self-Made Master of Sales Dennis built mastery through constant reading, listening, and learning from others in sales, wealth, and business — not formal education. Find mentors and masters in your own areas of growth. Lesson 2 – Build Relationships Dennis was a connection machine with an extensive network across all areas of life. Remember the law of the gift – your being increases in the measure you give it away. Lesson 3 – Antennas Up As a chemical salesman, Dennis was always alert to opportunities, even on vacation — talking to hotel housekeepers to gather intel and find new accounts. Stay aware and follow up on every potential lead. Lesson 4 – Get Sh*t Done Dennis attacked projects with urgency and had zero tolerance for procrastination. 265. Nothing Easy

Today Jake focuses on a single, powerful theme: Nothing Easy. The "Nothing Easy" Mentality for Defense Lawyers As a DWI defense attorney, the prosecution often has the deck stacked in its favor. The state is on offense, and in many DWI cases, both the facts and the law lean toward the prosecution. Don't forget the famous words of Carl Sandburg: "If the facts are against you, argue the law. If the law is against you, argue the facts. If the facts and the law are against you, pound the table and yell like hell." The Full Court Press Strategy James uses a basketball analogy — specifically referencing Shaka Smart's "Havoc" defense at VCU — to illustrate the full court press approach in the courtroom: Don't let the state walk the ball up the court unchallenged — press them from the very start. Object early and often — frequent objections disrupt the prosecutor's rhythm and throw officers off their scripted testimony. Force turnovers — the full court press won't work on every inbound, but if you employ the method throughout the game (or trial), you may force enough errors to change the outcome.

Move in the Same Direction On the Camino, everyone walks toward one destination: the Cathedral of St. James. In your firm, does everyone know where you're headed? A shared, clearly communicated destination aligns your team regardless of starting point or pace. 4. Walk Together "If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together." Leaders who run too far ahead become invisible. Staying within sight of your team builds culture, trust, and a shared experience. 5.
