E93 --Honoring Chizoma Ekechukwu: A Tribute to Resilience
In Memory of Chizoma “Chizo” Ekechukwu (1994–2026) We’re re-sharing this episode in honor of Chizoma “Chizo” Ekechukwu, Daytime MBA Class of 2025, who passed away on August 13, 2026, after her leukemia returned. Chizo was Co-President of the Black Business Student Association, a Career and Admissions Fellow, and a mentor and so much more to so many across the Fuqua community. Diagnosed with cancer during her first year, she refused to let it take what she came to Fuqua for. She stayed in school, kept leading, and graduated on time with her class, earning the Duke Impact Award, the Deans’ Recognition Award, and the HSM Leadership Award. In this conversation with host Abimbola Olurotimi (Class of 2025), recorded weeks before graduation while Chizo was in remission, she opens up about her diagnosis, the power of community, learning to let people help her, and being kind to yourself on the hard days. The episode opens with a new tribute from current co-host Jennia Taylor. Chizo cared deeply about the shortage of Black donors on the stem cell registry. To honor her, consider joining at nmdp.org (https://www.dkms.org/get-involved/virtual-drives/swabs-for-chizoma). It’s free and starts with a cheek swab kit.
