Next Level Mindset with Nathan Winston
George Wright III interviews Nathan Winston—former professional baseball player, coach, corrections officer, motivational speaker, and founder of Next Level Mindset—about overcoming obstacles and reframing setbacks. Winston shares being born with PFFD, having his left leg amputated at age four, and being told he would never play sports, yet competing in basketball, baseball, and football while managing sweating and frequent prosthetic failures. He explains how fear nearly stopped him from running onto the court in seventh grade, which shaped his principle of “getting comfortable being uncomfortable.” The conversation focuses on fear of failure, redefining success as doing everything you can, building self-belief, and surrounding yourself with positive people. Winston discusses dark moments from injuries and breaks, and says a work injury motivated him to start writing a memoir and sharing his story through speaking and podcasts. 00:00 Fear Before Tipoff 00:29 Podcast Welcome and Guest Intro 01:51 Nathan’s Amputation Story 03:17 Early Mindset and Sports Drive 04:22 Prosthetic Struggles in Games 05:49 Injuries and Quitting Football 06:40 Next Level Mindset Explained 08:28 Fear of Failure and Reframing 10:34 Daily Rituals and Broken Foot Story 12:22 Helping Others Build Confidence 14:59 Memoir Motivation and Setbacks Thanks for listening, and Please Share this Episode with someone. Guest Bio Nathan Winston is a former professional baseball player, speaker, and advocate for embracing adversity as a path to growth. Born with a rare condition called Proximal Femoral Focal Deficiency, Nathan had his left leg amputated at four years old. That never stopped him from competing. Growing up, he played football, basketball, and baseball alongside his peers while learning to overcome challenges most athletes never face—from repairing his prosthetic during games to pitching on a cracked prosthetic foot held together with a homemade splint and duct tape. Nathan’s determination eventually took him all the way to professional baseball. Through injuries, setbacks, and some of the most difficult moments of his life, he developed what he calls the Next Level Mindset: the understanding that confidence comes after doing the uncomfortable thing, not before. His philosophy is simple: “Get comfortable being uncomfortable until you get comfortable.” Today, Nathan shares his story to inspire others to see adversity differently—not as something that has to define their future, but as an experience that can prepare them for their purpose.
