In Episode 86 of The Consultation, hosts Sara Compton and Joshua Floyd recognize Domestic Violence Awareness Month with special guest Janisha Rodriguez, a victim services attorney at Denton County Friends of the Family (DCFOF). Together, they discuss the realities of domestic abuse, the barriers survivors face when trying to leave, and the resources available to help individuals and families find safety. Domestic abuse is not limited to physical violence. It can include emotional abuse, financial control, intimidation, isolation, coercion, and other behaviors intended to establish power over another person. Leaving an abusive relationship can be complicated and sometimes dangerous, particularly when children, finances, housing, and safety are involved.
