Send us a textIn this episode you will meet my dear friend, Eduardo Garcia. A celebrity American Chef, Avid world class hunter, surfer, fisherman, and wild foods explorer. We met up here in Ventura late spring 2024. Eduardo, my wife Kelly and I had a sunset-moonrise beach cooked dinner in a sandy shack on the beach in West Ventura. It was so cool to see the fire reflect in Ed’s eyes seeing his curiosity and hunger for wild outdoor adventure. The next day we paddled out at Rincon surf break and no shit, we were the only ones out! The perfect little waist to chest high sets rolled in and yes, Eduardo paddled into one, perfect form.. and with style and grace Eduardo went pumping down the line for 100 yards. It was so f’n cool! In the episode Eduardo talks about his mom and dad and growing up in Bozeman, Montana, where his father was a fisherman and chef, and his mother was an astrologer, Montessori teacher, and author. He tells the story of his dad, Manual Alfredo Garcia Castilla “Poppy” and how he gave him good sound advice that Ed will later use in his life’s journey. Eduardo helps us see the best in ourselves.Through a variety of creative mediums — including food, film, speaking, and experiential activations — Eduardo Garcia helps people expand their sense of possibility and realize their potentialWe talk about his journey of over 10 years of yachting where he worked as a chef on various private yachts, allowing him to explore surf breaks, new cultures, and many different ethnic cuisines from around the world. You will hear how he almost lost his life doing what he loves. In 2011, while bow-hunting elk in the Montana backcountry, Eduardo stumbled upon the dry remains of a bear. Attempting to remove a claw with his knife, he received a severe electrical shock from a hidden 2400-volt power line beneath the bear’s carcass. Knocked to the ground and severely burned to near death, he was alone and miles from help, Eduardo got up and took his first step towards what would ultimately be years of recovery and rehabilitation. A feature length documentary film was made about this accident. It is called Charged. You got to see it!!Since then, Eduardo has doubled down on his mission to make food an intracule part of every adventure. Eduardo Garcia’s story exemplifies courage, adaptability, and a love for life and food that transcends physical limitations. As an entrepreneur Chef Eduardo has been busy crafting delicious salsas all the way back to 2008. As Eduardo said “A meal, I realized, is more than what we eat. It’s a tool for building culture and sustaining community, and the most memorable are those meals you took the time to prepare yourself”Eduardo has a nationally recognized cooking show channels.Hungry Life. Send us a textWhen Sean Willmore and I met over 10 years ago, we felt an immediate bond as if we had known each other for years. Maintaining close contact, I had the good fortune to visit with Sean last month on this side of the pond. While in Ventura meeting with a member of the Holdfast Collective, he discussed his endeavors protecting extensive acreage of wild lands for its conservation in perpetuity. That afternoon we met up at a local pub, sharing stories with photographer, world traveler, and surfer, Andrew Fish. Stories from the Trailer #12 unfolded with Sean Willmore, whose organic flow and authentic spirit will envelop you with hope. Sean is a former Australian Park Ranger with 11 years of experience, the Founder and Managing Director of the Thin Green Line Foundation. He is a past President of the International Rangers Federation (IRF), a non-profit organization comprising 60 Ranger Associations in 46 countries. As you will hear in Episode 12, the IRF's mission is to raise awareness of and support the critical work carried out by park rangers conserving our natural, wild, biodiverse fauna, flora, and cultural heritages. Twenty years ago Sean embarked on a remarkable journey, selling his car and remortgaging his house three times to create a documentary film, The Thin Green Line. Over the course of 14 months, he traveled to 23 different countries across 6 continents, capturing the lives and stories of rangers. The film, screened in 50 countries, sheds light on the life threatening challenges faced by these dedicated conservation warriors. (In our nomenclature a Park Ranger differs in scope of this international title given to those individuals who 24/7 put their lives on the line facing poachers, environmental devastation, risking themselves for the good of the planet’s entire interdependent ecosystems.)Sean’s passionate commitment to supporting rangers and their families, led him to establish the Thin Green Line foundation, the first charity solely dedicated to supporting rangers and their families. His dedication to this cause attracted the attention of renowned ethologist and conservationist, Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, who became a close confidante and a staunch supporter of Thin Green Line, embracing Sean’s concern for the welfare of rangers and their families is the Thin Green Line's treasured ambassador to this day. Send us a textRick Ridgeway and I have been friends for over 25 years and I have always held him in high regard. To me he has always been "bigger than life!” When I have had the good fortune to converse over tea and share stories, I realized that he is a humble, soft spoken, down to earth, gentle, calm, and thoughtful person.Imagine, he is the man who conquered the first American ascent of K2! In addition, he was the first to directly traverse coast-to-coast Borneo and the first to cross on foot the 300-mile corner of Tibet, so remote no outsider had ever seen it! During his explorations, Ridgeway witnessed the degradation of the wildlands that had come to define his life. He was determined and set out to protect the wild beauty that he fell in love with.Ridgeway authored 7 books, including Life Lived Wild. Each of his publications are an awesome read. Send us a textThis episode unleashes a story of grit, integrity, and hard work as Robert Lower has built, what I consider, one of the best examples of regenerative farming practices! Robert and I have been friends since the late 70s! Our stories of being together are so cool and engaging. I believe you will enjoy hearing Robert’s true stories.Robert is a pioneer date farmer that is the OG of regenerative date farming in the Coachella Valley (precisely Thermal, CA). Robert's vision was to transform arid baked desert into an amazing award-winning oasis that is truly not bound by conventional farming. Lower raises at least 16 varieties of dates, as well as citrus trees, figs, pomegranates, and aloe vera beneath the date palms’ airy canopy. He globally encourages wild edible greens such as purslane, mallow, and lamb’s quarters — plants that farmers, historically, would condemn as weeds. Robert Lower founded Flying Disc Ranch in 1979, clearing, plumbing, and planting the ranch from scratch. Prior to 1979 the gardened rows were parched desert. Born and raised in Santa Barbara, California, he cultivated his first garden when he was four years old growing radishes and carrots! The fourth of seven children, growing fruits and vegetables was integral for the large family. His family nurtured gardens, fruit, and nut trees with their Greek and German immigrant neighbors guiding the way, accompanied with goats and chickens.Robert relishes being outdoors – playing freestyle Frisbee, hunting, fishing, hiking, camping, boating, surfing, bicycling, and spending time at the beach. Farming was a natural profession for him to follow equipped with all of the tools needed to succeed. Although dates were a challenge, he thrives on overcoming obstacles, passionately wanting to be the best at whatever he does.
