Rory Stewart on Leadership Principles in a New World Order

Today’s guest is Rory Stewart - a man with an extraordinary biography and a sharp intellect. Drawing on his unusually broad and deep experience, I had an enjoyable and compact conversation with Rory about navigating conflict, dealing with a changing world order and acting as a true leader within it. Rory is a former British cabinet minister and is known globally today as the co-host of the highly recommended podcast "The Rest Is Politics". He is also Professor in the Practice of Grand Strategy at the Yale Jackson School of Global Affairs. Before that, Rory served as a soldier, diplomat and provincial administrator in Iraq. He also walked across Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India and Nepal; experiences he later captured in his fascinating books. Leadership Lessons - Team Performance, Resilience and Self-Management with Explorer Anja Blacha

Anja Blacha is truly exceptional: In the early 2020s she became the first woman to ski solo and unsupported from the Antarctic coast to the South Pole; a feat recognized by Guinness World Records. The expedition covered 1381 km in just 58 days, facing snow storms with winds up to 100 km/h and temperatures down to -35°C while Anja was pulling a 100 kg sledge with everything the explorer needed to survive. Anja is also among the world’s top mountaineers. As of 2025, she has climbed twelve of the fourteen 8000 meter peaks without supplemental oxygen; including a Mount Everest summit without bottled oxygen in May 2025. High-Performance Teams at NASA and Leadership Lessons with Thomas Zurbuchen

I‘m talking of none other than astrophysicist Prof. Thomas Zurbuchen. Till the end of 2022 he was the Chief Scientist at NASA and with that arguably the most powerful scientist on the planet with responsibility over thousands of people and a 8 billion dollar + budget. Under his leadership, NASA successfully launched the historic James Webb Telescope and landed robots on Mars - among dozens of other impressive missions. Bertrand Piccard is an exceptional person. As adventurer, explorer and psychiatrist he flew around the world with the Orbiter 3 balloon which was the longest flight in human history and outcompeted famous billionaire Richard Branson when doing so. After breaking records with Orbiter 3, Bertrand Piccard set out to push the boundaries of the impossible again and after many years of perseverance and innovation, Piccard flew around the world in the first maned solar powered airplane known as Solar Impulse. Today he uses his influence and the Solar Impulse Foundation to collect more than 1000 profitable technologies who will contribute to a more sustainable future. (Employer) Branding - über das strategische Führungsinstrument mit Alex Herrmann

Branding ist ein strategisches Führungsinstrument gegenüber verschiedenen Zielgruppen: von den Kunden bis zu den eigenen Mitarbeitenden. Erfolgsfaktor Design - Wie Firmen mit Design erfolgreicher werden mit Prof. Jan-Erik Baars

Mit Design den Firmenwert um 40% steigern? Das geht und Jan Erik Baars weiss wie. Jan-Erik war über 20 Jahre bei Philipps praktizierender Designer und wurde auch Mitglied der Geschäftsführung. Heute untersucht er als Professor für Designmanagement an der Universität Luzern die Erfolgsfaktoren von Design und vermittelt Firmen als Verwaltungsrat oder Berater Designkompetenz. Auf der Basis seiner Forschung hat Jan-Erik diverse Tools für Unternehmen entwickelt und diese über die Firma Customer Metrics zugänglich gemacht. 2018 erschien sein Buch „Leading Design“. Building Google, Hiring Talent and Innovation Culture with Employee No. 8 Urs Hölzle

Sometimes small decisions are life changing. Urs Hölzle, a Swiss computer scientist, made such a decision without knowing when he became the 8th employee of Google back in the late 1990s. For the past two decades, he was responsible for building what might be the most impressive infrastructure ever created. You all know the services that run on the infrastructure Urs developed: Google Search, Gmail, YouTube, Google Drive, Google Maps, Google Cloud and many others. What makes Google's infrastructure impressive is the scale, complexity, and efficiency with which it operates. Google's data centers span multiple continents and are largely powered by renewable energy sources. The company uses advanced techniques, such as machine learning and AI, to optimize its data centers, reduce energy consumption and improve reliability. In this conversation, I talked to Urs about the early days of Google when it was not more than just a few people and computers in a garage in Silicon Valley.
