PFT #105 - Personal Finance Tip of the Week: Pillar #1 - No Credit Card Debt
This is the 1st installment of the Four Pillars to Financial Success, for the rules of living comfortably, and the number one item is do not have credit card debt. What this means is that you can use your credit cards; however, all of your statement balances must be paid off each month. First and foremost: when one carries credit debt that is collecting interest, then it means that he or she cannot afford to pay other bills or items without borrowing. For example, according to Nerd Wallet, Nearly three-quarters of 2025 holiday shoppers (74%) plan to use credit cards for at least part of their gift shopping this year. But some may still be struggling to pay off debt from last holiday season. According to the survey, of 2024 holiday shoppers who used credit cards, 31% still haven’t paid off the balances. Credit card debt is toxic. The average person spends approximately $1,000 on the holidays. Assuming a 16% interest rate and paying the minimum balance, it would take 83 months to pay it off and $659 would be paid in interest alone. So this is just one aspect in a given year. As more and more debt piles up, borrowing money inhibits the ability to invest for your retirement. Even with this pattern being true at a young age, people think that they’ll get around to it; however, the reality for most is that they will kick the can down the road and as years go by, the little to show for all the years that they worked. For example, investing $100 per month in an S&P fund over 48 years yields $1 million dollars. That’s just an electric bill, streaming services or a couple of door dash orders. The bottom line is that if you have credit debt, retool your budget or create one and get the debt down. If you're young enough to move back home; that is another option. Do whatever it takes. Think of it as running your own personal business; do you want to be in debt or do you want to have money in your pocket?
