Marketing 4 Business: Conversation with Scott Wilson on his podcast

This is the audio of a conversation I had as a guest on Scott Wilson's podcast called Marketing 4 Business (which is here ). Here is the description of the episode from Scott He left a career doing billion-dollar corporate deals in London, Tokyo and Sydney to ask small business owners one simple question: what's your purpose? In this Marketing 4 Business episode, Scott chats with Steve Moe, corporate lawyer at Perry Field Lawyers and host of the Seeds podcast (closing in on 500 episodes), about why purpose can't just live in a slogan, it needs to live in your legal documents. From reinventing his career after a decade overseas to helping charities and founders raise funding, Steve shares insights grounded in real client work. He covers: • Why your business purpose needs to be written into your legal documents, not just your marketing • The 3-bullet-point test Steve gives every founder to nail their real "why" • Why loans from family and friends are often the riskiest way to fund a startup • The New Zealand "number 8 wire" mindset that quietly caps how far a business can grow • Why nature could legally hold shares in a company, and how NZ law already makes this possible • The "gracious no" habit that protects your time without burning bridges • Why "work-life balance" is the wrong goal, and what to aim for instead • The regret-test question Steve uses before every big life decision If you're a business owner trying to get clear on your purpose, build a team that isn't limited by you, or figure out how to fund your next stage of growth, this episode is well worth your time. Volunteers! When you are doing it all ... in discussion with Abby Golden and Chris Joseph for Community Governance Aotearoa

This session I facilitated a panel considering volunteer organisations which was put on by Community Governance Aotearoa. I am grateful to Rose and Alice and the team there for letting me put up the audio of the session on Seeds Podcast as well. Volunteer boards (sports clubs, waka ama, arts groups and more) are the backbone of Aotearoa's not-for-profit sector. When there's no paid staff, committees and boards often juggle governance and operations, everything from managing subscriptions to compliance and community engagement. This talk is for anyone asking: How do we do it all and still lead well? Practical, actionable, and designed for community governance leaders. Our panelists for this talk were: Steven Moe – Partner at Parry Field Lawyers, specialising in social enterprises, not for profits Abby Golden – Co-founder at Te Ara Tīrama Charitable Trust Chris Joseph – Executive Director at Volunteer Kāpiti There is a youtube video of this session here as well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vruUDbBLu40 For more content visit www.theseeds.nz
