A camera is just a tool, but spend enough time with photographers, and you’ll see them go misty-eyed when they talk about their first camera or a small, fast prime that they had in their youth. Prime Lenses is a series of interviews with photographers talking about their photography by way of three lenses that mean a lot to them. These can be interchangeable, attached to a camera, integrated into a gadget. I’m interested in the sometimes complex relationship we have with the tools we choose, why they can mean so much, and how they make us feel.

Episode 118 - Tammie Joske

Tammie Joske is a photographer turned creator who has recently decided to go it alone and make videos about street and film photography. A friend of the show recommended I get in touch with her because like me she shoots the C Biogon 35 f2.8 on her M camera. Episode 117 - Mattia Bidoli

Mattia Bidoli is photographer and magician who has worked in some of the most dangerous places on the planet. His photography from places experiencing conflict like Ukraine and Gaza are sadly in demand in 2026. I met him at the Raw Photo Festival in May and he was kind enough to talk to me while we were there and give me a copy of his book which I devoured on the journey home. Episode 114 - Johany Jutras

Johany Jutras is a Canadian photographer specialising in making images of Athletes. I found her because she was posting on Substack about finding a new perspective with a fixed lens compact camera, the Leica Q. I found this to be fascinating, taking something that is absolutely not designed with that use case in mind, would require getting up close and would only offer one perspective. As you’ll hear, Johany is not one for taking the easy route. Cal Holland is a UK based street photographer who exclusively shoots film and not on a Leica. I felt like I had to know more and found him to be a great guest. I mention in the show that I was logging photos I was taking using a shortcut. You can download it yourself here, there are instructions for using it in the shortcut. There is a bit of setup needed.
