What the heck do you actually DO to start training in a functional way? How do you even begin to understand the issues in your body pulling your posture out of place, impacting your breathing, creating imbalances, or inefficient compensations in your movement patterns? Both of us have gone through their own journeys of reversing issues that were caused by injuries, ineffective training (that made them WORSE), and have gone through many alternative systems of functional fitness to try to find the answers. Today we talk about the step-by-step process that we mapped out ourselves through trial and error, as well as what we've seen work best with the many clients that we've both collectively worked with, rather surprised that we came to similar conclusions in the journey we determined. The Step-by-Step Process that we use to bring people from most backgrounds (whether total physical beginner, or experienced athlete) resembles the following: 1. Nervous System Tone/Breathing: Preparing the body to be in a regulated nervous system tone, so that it's receptive to the stimulus that will create adaptive change. If stuck in a state of high stress/anxiety (which most people are without realizing it), then trying to create change is like driving with the handbrake on. Downregulation, myofascial release, and correcting breathing mechanics to stabilize that state is first. 2. Alignment, Integrity, and Internal Pressurization When the nervous system is ready, we work on creating body awareness, and use that awareness to make adjustments into an aligned standing posture. Then applying external (and internal) pressures and resistance, we train the body to hold the appropriate tensions and create supportive internal buoyancy to have a stable, balanced postural baseline. 3. Training Movement-Relevant Attributes Looking at the mechanics of the body, in relationship to gait and throwing (what the human joints/system is most optimized for as a movement priority), we develop the attributes that support efficient movement. Using feedback from observing actual movement, we teach people how to intentionally address movement compensations, and avoid "training for the sake of getting better at training". 4. Adding Intensity and Complexity Once a foundational base of functionality has been established, adding intensity in the form of high output sprinting, complexity in terms of dynamic movement that requires greater coordination will help enhance and improve movement quality longer term If you want to learn ALL the details of each of these steps, the theory and nuanced details of biomechanics, then you can check out the STEP BY STEP COURSE and training program being built in THE FORGE: the BEST community on the internet for functional fitness enthusiasts to grow and develop in their understanding of biomechanics, training, and how to build out an online coaching business in their industry. Tipping the hat to the OG conversations about movement and biomech that The Art of Move used to tackle, join Anthony Manuele and Ali Ziaei's inaugural episode where they delve into the foundational principles of "functional fitness," setting the stage for all future discussions on training and movement. This episode is key for anyone looking to understand the real essence behind one of the most used—and misused—terms in fitness today. The journey begins by defining "function" through the lens of evolutionary biomechanics, emphasizing the human body's natural design as bipedal locomotive creatures with shoulders specialized for throwing. From there, we explore "fitness" and how it integrates with our biomechanical functions, merging these concepts into a comprehensive understanding of functional fitness.Anthony and Ali, leveraging Ali's extensive background as a personal trainer, gym owner, and functional movement coach, aim to clarify these terms by connecting them directly to practical training strategies. This dialogue is not just theoretical; it's about applying these principles to enhance the way we train and live.Whether you're a trainer, athlete, or physiotherapist, this episode will provide a clear, solid foundation of functional fitness based on evolutionary principles. It’s a guide to refining how we approach fitness, making our training and lifestyle more aligned with what our bodies are inherently built to do.Tune in to redefine your training philosophy and engage with us as we lay down the groundwork for smarter, more effective fitness methodologies.
