When Being Stubborn Is Leadership And When It's Ego

Bob sings The Gambler and turns it into a leadership question. He quit a job after 4 days when he learned he'd been hired as the ax man. Josh called off an office redesign mid-move. A million-dollar pod experiment survived one day. Hold, fold, walk away, run, and the cost of doing none of them. 10 Leadership Habits Most Managers Skip

Football's back. And on the first day of the 2026 preseason, Josh and Bob take one of the oldest lines in coaching and point it straight at leadership. Good teams don't win on trick plays. They win because they run the routine plays routinely. Block, tackle, catch the ball, do it again next week, do it while everybody else is chasing something clever. So what are the routine plays of leadership? The habits that quietly work when you do them consistently and quietly fall apart when you don't? Bob made a list. Josh made a list. Bob's was longer, and he made sure everybody knew it. Bob and Josh Finally Disagree About Something: Transparency

Bob opens with a metaphor about window blinds. Truth isn't a switch, he says, it's a set of slats you're constantly adjusting. Closed all the way, open all the way, and every shade of dim in between. He argues we're all doing this already, whether we admit it or not, because nobody walks around spewing 100% of what they know to every person they meet. Josh's picture is different. His light switch is taped to the on position with a sign that says "Do not touch!" The filtering happens somewhere else, in deciding who gets which truth and when. That gap turns into an actual disagreement, which almost never happens on this show. AI Answers Everything, So Who's Having the Ideas?

AI can hand you an answer to almost anything in seconds. Bob and Josh spend this episode asking what that convenience is quietly costing us. It starts with an IEEE Spectrum article showing that researchers who use AI publish more and get cited more, while the range of what's actually being discovered shrinks. Bob names the bigger pattern, a "creativity sinking hole" where humans contribute fewer original ideas, AI trains on the thinner output, and the whole loop drifts toward average. Along the way, Josh explains why he trusts LLMs in his own domain but gets nervous everywhere else, why answer engine optimization means you should treat AI output like search results (ads and all), and what happened when he spent 5 unplanned minutes actually thinking about a problem instead of prompting about it. The landing spot is courage. The courage to have a new idea, try it, and fail. The courage to create content that's unmistakably yours. Bob's mic drop metric for the whole episode: the goal is never "I found an idea" or "I prompted an idea." It's "I have an idea." Use AI to augment your thinking. Then bring you. 6 Leadership Characteristics We Admire After 20 Years of Working Together

Bob and Josh go round robin, naming the leadership characteristics they admire in each other after 2 decades of working together: generosity, genuineness, the courage to evolve, openness to crazy ideas, and speaking truth to power while scared. The real takeaway is Bob's ultimate leadership metric: what does your team say about you years after you stop working together? Life Balance for Leaders on a Hard Sprint

A CEO's LinkedIn vacation post sparks one of our most personal episodes yet. Bob shares the real cost of putting the company first, Josh shares the question from his kids that changed everything, and together we cover why a leader's absence is the truest test of their leadership. Can AI Make You a Great Leader?

Can AI make you a great leader? Josh says no, Bob agrees, and they spend this one drawing the line between the tactical work AI can absorb and the human work it can't. They get into Meta's 50-to-1 manager experiment, the unscripted moments that reveal who you really are as a leader, and why great leadership only ever gets learned in the trenches: no books, no videos, no easy button. The 60 Second Habit That Builds Better Leadership Instincts

The smartest leadership tool you've got isn't in any AI model. It's your gut. Bob and Josh dig into why intuition still wins the hard calls, the ones data alone can't make for you. Bob owns up to the hires he botched by ignoring his gut. Josh shares the story of the client who told him he was being paid for his pattern recognition and how that changed everything. Reading a room. Trusting yourself before anyone else does. The 60-second habit that sharpens your instincts. And why even perfect data shouldn't get the final word. If you've been outsourcing your judgment to a chatbot, this one's for you. Why Great Leaders Get Comfortable Being Wrong

Every leader gets it wrong eventually. The question is what you do next. Josh and Bob dig into one of the hardest things any leader faces: admitting a mistake out loud. Not waffling, not deflecting, not the classic move of saying the wrong thing louder and hoping it becomes true. Actually owning it. They get into why doubling down is so tempting and so corrosive, how your team almost always knows you're wrong before you do, and why vulnerability ends up being a far stronger position than false certainty. Josh tells the story of bombing an Amazon interview over their "you're right a lot" principle, and how it took him years to understand what that line was actually saying. Bob makes the case that being wrong with your team is no different than being wrong with your spouse or your kids, and that bad news never ages well. If you've ever sat in an all-hands watching everyone trade that look because the person on stage just said something nobody in the room believes, this episode is for you. The world isn't binary. It's mostly gray, and learning to lead in that gray is the whole job.
