Ep.11 - Raise the Floor with Daniella Moiseyev
I want a lot of money and I'm not even a little bit sorry about it. Somewhere along the way women got trained that wanting a certain lifestyle, asking for what you're worth, saying out loud that you want more — that all of that makes you a bad person. It doesn't. Being a bad person makes you a bad person. You can be ethical, sleep well at night, step on exactly nobody, and still want the whole thing. This week I'm talking with Daniella Moiseyev, who has spent close to 30 years in financial services and came in with a stack of sticky notes and zero interest in pretending it was all a straight line. We get into the concept of your floor — the number in your account below which you start to panic — and how that floor isn't built in, it gets raised on purpose. She tells the story of negotiating her first salary from $18,500 to $21,500, which went against every "nice girl" rule she'd absorbed, and being so proud of herself she thought she was rich. We also get into the thing I've started calling borrowing someone else's belief. My coach recently told me the number I made this year should be more than triple that, and I told her she was insane. She just kept asking me why. And then it doubled. Daniella had the same thing happen with a mentor who wouldn't stop asking why she couldn't go for the top job, until she'd talked herself right into it. That's what the right people in your corner actually do — they don't shield you from hard truths, and they don't dismiss your dreams either. If you leave a conversation feeling energized, even a hard one, those are your people. If you leave feeling ugh, they're not. And then the part I needed to hear: you can have it all, you just can't have it all at the same time. Daniella lives by a line from Michael Porter — the essence of strategy is choosing what not to do — and she means it about her career, her house, her whole life. Plus her leadership mantra, which I want tattooed somewhere: the org chart says they work for you, but really, you work for them.
