On the Jay Ramone Podcast, I will sit down with bands, artists, chefs, business owners, and fellow Oklahomans to talk about their projects & dealing with day-to-day life.
I met Hank when he was around 12 years old at his Dad's Recording Studio, Valcour Sound in Broken Arrow, Ok.... After that he started a White Stripes Tribute band w/ his 8 year old sister. 20+ years ago, I played bass guitar in a band from just outside of Tulsa called Hot Rod Bob.... We put out one full length record on Yawn Records called "No Siree Bob".... We were fortunate enough to get to play with bands like Velvet Revolver, Shinedown, Bowling For Soup, Blue October, the Burden Brothers, The Feds, & many more.... Our very 1st gig was in Pryor, OK at the American Legion Hall, which we rented out to put on the show. That night the 1st HRB, Punk Rock Halloween show happened. We had our friends in Composition B on the bill as well as a band from Muskogee called "Bill Murrays Prostate".... We instantly became fans of their band & friends with everyone in it. We probably shared the stage with BMP more than any other band. Recently, Aaron Walter, the singer & guitar player, has gotten BMP back together & have started to put out music again. They are playing a show at the Whittier Bar in Tulsa, OK on 10/23/26 as they revive the tradition known as Punk Rock Halloween! Originally for this episode we were going to be joined by Harley from HRB as well but his internet connection would not allow him to participate. Beginning in 2015 in Florida, the band Felicity was born. After years of recording & releasing music and playing shows, they went into the studio to record a full length that would end up being titled "Dear Universe"... They made plans for its release & what they were going to do to promote it. They were on the heels of playing on of their biggest hometown shows w/ Issues & an unknown band at the time called "Sleep Token"... Then the world shut down when covid hit. Felicity decided to wait on their new albums release until they could actually do something with it.... That proved to be a smart move.... Dustin Howard has been in a handful of bands over the years, most recently, his project is called Groucho & he has been a guest previously on the podcast. Dustin has also written the music for several documentaries & even an episode of Sesame Street. In this episode I am joined by Greg Upchurch. Before he was playing drums in Arenas & venues all over the world, Greg grew up in Kingston, Oklahoma. Myself being from Ardmore, OK in Southern Oklahoma, we all knew of Greg b/c he was one of us. He grew up in small town Oklahoma & was doing big things musically after moving to LA. We will discuss how he got to play with 3 Doors Down, Puddle of Mudd, Chris Cornell, & more.... We will also discuss his love of coffee & what inspired him to open his own coffee shop in Kingston, Ok & how he ended up connecting with another person from Kingston who had recently purchased a coffee farm in Bolivia.... The lesson of the story is, don't wait to send that message or reach out to your friends & catch up. Ryan McNeill & I grew up in Southern Oklahoma together, going to elementary school together in Healdton, Oklahoma. Our families lives were intertwined through their professions, so needless to say, Ryan & I know each other fairly well. In our teenage years, Ryan, as well as his older brothers were musical influencers.... tastemakers.... Always had the coolest band tshirts & were listening to something no one else had even heard of before. in 2002, I went to NYC to cover the CMJ Music Festival / Conference. During that trip i reconnected with Ryan & went to a show in Brooklyn as he showing me the city. Fast forward to 2026 & Ryan has worked in advertising in Manhattan, worked on Deadliest Catch in Alaska, as well as formed a band called "Debate Team" w/ members of OkGo & One Republic. I sent Ryan a message & asked him to be a guest on the podcast b/c at the end of July, Ryan & his family are relocating to Madrid. In this episode we will talk about his career, musical influences, growing up in Oklahoma, & ultimately navigating a major life change in moving to a different country.
