Episode 104 - Business Financial Management Expert Keri Whitelaw

🎙️ In this episode of The Jane Anderson Show, I speak with Keri Whitelaw about building a successful specialist practice, turning expertise into thought leadership, and finding new ways to create value for clients. Keri shared how her journey with Sort Your Books evolved from a bookkeeping practice into a broader business support and advisory service. We explored how developing her intellectual property helped her move beyond writing regular articles and blogs to publishing her first book, Accelerate – The Fast Track to Sort Your Books, Sort Your Business, Sort Your Life . What began as a goal to communicate her expertise more consistently became an opportunity to turn years of practical knowledge into a lasting business asset. We also discussed how Keri uses her content across multiple formats, from blogs and social media to workshops, client resources and books. Her approach to AI is particularly practical: she uses it to simplify, summarise and adapt her own material while keeping her original thinking and expertise at the centre. We also explored the importance of understanding clients' challenges, packaging services around value rather than hourly rates, and helping business owners make more confident financial decisions. What stood out to me was Keri's realisation that she knew more than she thought she did. By taking the time to document her knowledge and develop it into intellectual property, she created opportunities she hadn't initially planned for, including becoming an author. Her story is a reminder that the expertise already sitting within your business may have far more potential than you realise. Meet Keri Whitelaw Keri Whitelaw is the founder of Sort Your Books, a bookkeeping, BAS, payroll and business support practice that has been helping small business owners understand their numbers and build stronger businesses since 1999. With more than 25 years of experience, Keri began her business during the introduction of the GST while pregnant with her first son. What started as an opportunity to help a handful of business owners has grown into a successful practice supported by a skilled team. A Registered BAS Agent with an Advanced Diploma in Accounting, Keri is passionate about helping business owners feel less overwhelmed by their numbers and more in control of their financial position. Her work helps clients understand cash flow, profit, break-even points and the systems they need to make clearer decisions and build sustainable businesses. Keri is also the author of Accelerate – The Fast Track to Sort Your Books, Sort Your Business, Sort Your Life , a practical guide designed to help business owners better understand their finances, software and business systems. Her journey into authorship began when she attended a writing retreat with the intention of developing articles and blogs. Through the process, she discovered how much knowledge she had already accumulated and how it could be developed into a book. Since then, Keri has used her intellectual property across multiple formats, including workshops, social media, client resources, and her published work. She believes in the principle of “create once, use often”, building assets that can be repurposed to reach different audiences and support her business in different ways. Today, Keri works as an active director of Sort Your Books, advises business owners and delivers workshops. Her experience offers valuable lessons for consultants, thought leaders and professional service providers looking to communicate their expertise, strengthen their positioning and build a more sustainable practice. Key Takeaways 1. Recognise the value of what you already know You don't always need to start with a completely new idea. Keri discovered that years of experience, client conversations and practical knowledge could become the foundation for articles, workshops and a book. Taking the time to document what you know can reveal opportunities you may not have considered. 2. Create once, use often Thought leadership doesn't have to mean constantly creating something new. A well-developed idea can become a blog, newsletter, social media post, workshop, or book chapter. Building your intellectual property first allows you to repurpose your expertise across different channels without starting from scratch each time. 3. Use AI to support your thinking, not replace it Keri uses AI to shorten, simplify, and summarise material she has already developed. By keeping her original ideas, voice and expertise at the centre, she can adapt her content for different audiences while maintaining ownership of the thinking behind it. 4. Build trust by making your expertise understandable Technical knowledge alone isn't always enough. Keri's approach centres on understanding a client's problem and explaining it in a way they can understand and act on. When clients feel understood and can see how your expertise applies to their situation, you build stronger relationships and create more meaningful value. 5. Package your services around value, not just time Keri shared how developing service packages and fixed-fee proposals helped her move beyond hourly pricing. By listening to clients, understanding their needs, and clearly defining what a service includes, expert businesses can communicate their value more effectively and build offers that better reflect the outcomes they provide. 6. Don't underestimate the opportunities your intellectual property can create Keri initially attended a writing retreat to develop articles and blogs, not to write a book. Yet that work became the foundation for Accelerate , workshops and other resources. Her experience shows how documenting your expertise can create opportunities beyond your original intention and give your business assets that continue to serve clients over time. Episode 103 - Global Authority on Upward Bullying Workplace Culture and Leadership Expert, Maureen Kyne

🎙️ In this episode of The Jane Anderson Show, I speak with Maureen Kyne about building a specialist practice, finding your place in the market, and staying close to the people you serve. Maureen shared how her practice had evolved over the years and how her deep focus on upward bullying emerged from her broader work in workplace behaviour. We explored what happens when you choose a clear area of expertise, recognise an emerging issue, and build your work around a problem that organisations genuinely need help addressing. We also talked about Maureen's approach to LinkedIn. She personally stays involved in conversations with her audience, using the questions, comments, and ideas she encounters to spark deeper thinking and develop themes for her thought leadership. We discussed the importance of models and frameworks, knowing what to keep in your hands, what to delegate, and building the right support around your practice. What stood out to me was Maureen's shift from chasing every opportunity to becoming much clearer about where she wanted to play. She shared how turning away work that wasn't in her lane created more time to connect with the people she wanted to work with and deepen her focus on upward harm. Meet Maureen Kyne Maureen Kyne is a specialist in workplace behaviour, with a deep focus on upward bullying, helping leaders and business owners address situations where they experience bullying or harmful behaviour from members of their team. Her work in this area grew from more than two decades of experience in behaviour and recognising a growing need for leaders to better understand and address these situations. Over time, Maureen has refined her focus, developed models and frameworks to help organisations understand different forms of workplace harm, and built a strong body of thought leadership around the topic. She also uses LinkedIn as an important part of her practice, staying personally connected to conversations with her audience and using what she hears to shape her thinking and content. One of the most interesting parts of Maureen's journey is the shift from chasing every opportunity to becoming much clearer about where she wants to play. She has deliberately turned away work that sits outside her lane so she can focus her time and energy on the people and problems she most wants to work with. This makes her story particularly relevant for anyone building an expert practice: specialisation isn't about narrowing your possibilities. It can create the space to go deeper, become known for something and build a stronger body of intellectual property around it. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Episode 102 - Keynote Speaker, Author, Workplace and School Violence Expert, Antoinette Tuff

Episode 102 - Keynote Speaker Author Workplace and School Violence Expert Antoinette Tuff 🎙️ In this episode of The Jane Anderson Show, Jane is joined by the extraordinary Antoinette Tuff, an author, speaker, educator, and community leader whose work is grounded in resilience, compassion, courage, and purpose. Antoinette shares the deeply personal story behind the experience that changed her life 13 years ago, and how the challenges she faced beforehand helped prepare her to respond with empathy and calm in an extraordinary moment. But this conversation goes far beyond the crisis itself. Jane and Antoinette explore the power of identity, self-awareness, influence without authority, and the importance of learning to truly know yourself. Antoinette shares how she spent more than a year “introducing herself to herself” after her marriage ended, rebuilding her confidence and learning who she was outside of her roles as a wife and mother. For B2B consultants, advisors and thought leaders, there are powerful lessons about building influence, developing your own voice, sustaining a message over time, and creating work that continues to evolve while staying grounded in purpose. Meet Antoinette Tuff Antoinette Tuff is an author, speaker, educator, and community leader whose work focuses on resilience, purpose, compassion, and helping others navigate challenging moments with courage and confidence. Her experience during an armed crisis at the school where she worked became the foundation for a much broader body of work, including her Tuff Tactics framework, speaking, coaching, programs and community initiatives. Today, Antoinette works with women, leaders, children and communities, using her experiences to help others build confidence, understand their identity and recognise their own capacity to create change. The Power of Identity and Self-Awareness Antoinette shares how the end of her 33-year marriage forced her to confront a question she had never really asked: who was she outside of her husband and children? She began a daily practice of introducing herself to herself, using the process to rebuild her confidence and create a new identity. That practice became much more significant than she realised at the time. When she later faced an extraordinary crisis, she was able to draw on the identity, compassion and confidence she had been practising for more than a year. Influence Without a Title Jane explores how Antoinette was able to influence someone in an extreme situation despite having no formal authority, no weapon and no positional power. Antoinette explains how she focused on the person behind the behaviour, listening for what he actually needed rather than simply responding to what he was saying. Her approach is captured in her Tuff Tactics of compassion, confidence and control, and the importance of knowing which one to bring into a situation and when. Building a Thought Leadership Practice Around Your Message Antoinette also shares how she has continued to develop the same core story and message over more than a decade without becoming tired of it. Rather than constantly creating something new, she has continued to elevate the message, adapting it into programs, memberships, coaching, children's books, workshops, and community initiatives. Her approach demonstrates how a strong body of intellectual property can evolve while remaining anchored in a central purpose and message. Finding Your Own Voice and Way of Working Antoinette reflects on her early experiences as a speaker, admitting that she didn't initially understand what a keynote was or what she was supposed to do on stage. Over time, she learned that she didn't need to imitate other speakers. Her natural style is interactive, energetic, and highly experiential. Her advice is simple: be yourself. ✨ Tune in to hear a powerful conversation about identity, courage, influence, self-awareness and building a body of work that continues to evolve while staying true to who you are.
