#132 The Effort of Hobbies: Work Hard, Play Harder

Jason and John are back for Episode #132 of I Shower After Work, and this week they're bringing returning guest Pete into the job trailer for a full-on hobby showdown. We've talked about how much hobbies cost before, but what about the actual WORK involved in having fun? The preparation, practice, physical effort, equipment, travel, cleanup, and time that go into doing something you supposedly enjoy? With hunting season approaching, Jason puts together a bracket to determine which hobbies require the most effort. Pete joins the guys to settle the arguments, break ties, and offer the perspective of someone who's turned his love of music into something that actually makes money. The matchups get ridiculous: painting and woodworking versus bird hunting, glamping versus hiking, gardening versus cycling, tent camping versus bird hunting, and big-game hunting versus golf. The guys debate whether e-bikes count as cycling, how much work goes into getting a camper ready, what separates a real hike from a walk, and whether gardening is basically a part-time job you never get paid for. Then the serious contenders start swinging. Fishing, camping, and big-game hunting all require planning, equipment, knowledge, physical effort, and a little luck. Jason argues his way through each matchup, John defends his positions, and Pete brings in a new angle: how much does risk factor into the effort you're willing to put into a hobby? Eventually, they crown big-game hunting as the hardest hobby in their bracket, with fishing taking second, camping third, and gardening somehow sneaking into fourth place. Along the way, they talk old-man back problems, Jason's 20th wedding anniversary, Pete's music, camper setups, Blackstone griddles, fire-starting tricks, Jason's upcoming Canadian fishing adventure, ham radio operators, and why some people will spend a ridiculous amount of time getting ready for a few hours of relaxation. #130 Don't Future Trip

This one starts with Jason accidentally taking a full-strength sip of a drink he thought had mix in it. Jason and John are back in their job trailers for Episode #128 of I Shower After Work. #127 Old AF But Still Kicking

Jason and John are back for Episode #127 of I Shower After Work, and this week they’re talking about getting old or at least realizing your body has been aging even if your brain still thinks you’re somewhere around 38. The episode kicks off with John’s birthday recap, peach cobbler tragedy, dairy-free ice cream, Midwest weather, Jason’s trip to Jimmy’s land and cabin, and a quick follow-up from last week’s Star Trek warp speed question. Jason’s brother comes through with the nerd answer: fuel, antimatter, deuterium, and dilithium crystals. Exactly the kind of answer Jason asked for, even if John still calls it Star Trek nerd stuff. Then the guys get into the main topic: aging. Jason is turning 48, John just turned 45, and both of them agree their brains feel younger than their bodies. They talk about when your mental age seems to stop, why 50 used to feel ancient, how old injuries come back to collect payment, and why doing dumb kid stuff before smartphones might be one of the greatest blessings of their generation. #125 Put Your Shoes On, Society

Jason and John are back after a couple weeks away, and Episode #125 of I Shower After Work starts with a weekend full of pucker factor. John gets run off the road on his motorcycle and somehow keeps it upright in the ditch. Around the same weekend, Jason discovers his rear tire is coming apart, then blows it out on the freeway at 55 mph before getting help from Great River Harley-Davidson in Onalaska. The guys kick things off with whiskey pouring, sugar-free Mountain Dew, brutal heat, a long 2/0 copper wire pull, sticky deep-fryer tables, and a couple of listener shoutouts. Greg sends in a show recommendation with The Capture and offers up a traffic-clearing superpower, while Casey H. recommends Peaky Blinders, which leads Jason and John into a quick talk about Cillian Murphy, Sons of Anarchy, and old-school gangster TV. From there, things bounce exactly the way an ISAW episode should. John brings up the latest Fauci conversation and the guys talk pardons, congressional hearings, and why they still have no use for the guy. Jason explains that he has become his wife’s “weed butler,” John defends Domino’s, Jason gives an update on the KFC bowl disappointment, and then the guys get into beat-up old trucks, farm rigs, homemade flatbeds, flying bed liners, and vehicles that probably should be on the trailer they’re towing. The episode also hits the Sherwin-Williams “Cover the Earth” logo, questionable business logos, Grease Monkey Garage, new drivers white-knuckling through turns, driver training, motorcycle tests, John’s daughter taking her driving test in an R/T Charger, and why learning to drive different-sized vehicles actually matters. Jason officially calls them “Chi Clowns,” John tells a near-miss story from 35W, and the guys talk about blind spots, lane changes, road rage, Dallas traffic, Chicago traffic, and people who do something stupid behind the wheel and still somehow think they’re the victim.
