99. Making Pawsitive Connections: Networking Strategies for Veterinary Professionals | MVC 2024 Preview Series

For veterinary professionals, connecting with animals is easy, but when it comes to connecting with humans, some of us aren’t nearly as comfortable. But with a little practice, networking can become much easier. For the final episode of our 2024 Midwest Veterinary Conference Preview Series, we’ve invited MVC speaker Dr. Michelle Harcha to the show to share her best advice for preparing for a networking event. Listen in for her tips, which you’ll be able to use right away at the MVC this week — and well into the future. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= For show notes, a transcript, and to learn more about today's guest, please visit www.fullyvettedpodcast.com. ✱ Never miss an episode! Subscribe to email alerts »

We’re going to help you get the most of your MVC experience, outside the four walls of the lecture hall.

97. Weighing Options: A Spectrum of Care to Meet Every Patient's Needs | MVC 2024 Preview Series

There are a variety of factors that influence a client's decision to treat their pets: Not everyone can afford the "gold standard," nor does everyone want lengthy or difficult treatments for their pets. But that doesn't mean they have no options. The term "spectrum of care," though relatively new, isn't a foreign concept by any means. In fact, veterinarians are masters of offering a range of care options at different price points and commitment levels to ensure animals get the treatment they need to live healthy, happy lives for as long as they can. In this episode, we are joined by Dr. Steven Budsberg, who is leading a new area of MVC programming dedicated to spectrum of care. He explains what spectrum of care means for the veterinary team and offers a sneak peek of what attendees will learn by attending the Canine Spectrum of Care track at the 2024 MVC.

94. Smooth Sailing: Charting a Course for a Successful Mentorship Program | MVC 2024 Preview Series

Having a solid support system is vital to new graduates’ success—and, by extension, the practice at which they work. With so much to learn and only four years of vet school in which to learn it, having someone around who can show you the ropes may be the difference between staying on board and jumping ship. In fact, about a third of veterinarians will leave their first practice within 14 months. So how do you reverse that trend? There are many possible solutions, but a strong mentorship program is key. But what is mentorship? Ask five different people, and you’ll get five different answers. In today’s episode, Dr. Kate Boatright joins us for another installment in our 2024 Midwest Veterinary Conference Preview Series. She is passionate about mentorship and will be sharing her expertise with attendees in the Staff Development track of programming. Tune in for a sneak peek! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= For show notes, a transcript, and to learn more about today's guest, please visit www.fullyvettedpodcast.com. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= ✱ Never miss an episode! Subscribe to email alerts »

93. Chill Out: Conditioning a Relaxation Response in Animals | MVC 2024 Preview Series

Relaxing on command is difficult for people, not to mention for dogs and cats. When we and our pets are naturally inclined to always be doing something—working, listening, even just thinking—turning off and relaxing can be difficult. But it is possible, and conditioning a relaxation response can have widespread applications and general health benefits benefits. In today’s episode, veterinary behaviorist Dr. Christopher Pachel offers a teaser into the “magic” of conditioned relaxation: What it is, why it’s useful, and how to go about achieving it in animals. It is one of 12 topics he’ll be covering at the 2024 Midwest Veterinary Conference. We also talk about how people’s everyday stress can impact their animals, how separation anxiety has shifted in the post-COVID world, and where medications come into the equation. He’ll also share insights into the sticky topic of rehoming an aggressive animal versus behavioral euthanasia. If you enjoy the conversation, be sure to attend Dr. Pachel’s sessions at the 2024 Hybrid MVC! Visit www.mvcinfo.org/attendees for more information and to register.

In this episode, we continue our 2024 Midwest Veterinary Conference Preview Series with Brad Marconyak, practice coach and strategic consultant with 35+ years of experience in the profession. 91. Fishful Thinking: Navigating the Currents of Aquatic Veterinary Medicine | MVC 2024 Preview Series

91. Fishful Thinking: Navigating the Currents of Aquatic Veterinary Medicine | MVC 2024 Preview Series

Pet ownership has been on the rise over the past few years, and that extends beyond traditional furry friends. According to recent surveys, some 12 percent of pet-owning households globally have pet fish. Furthermore, about half of fish consumption comes from the aquaculture industry, which produces more than 80 million tons of fish annually to meet that demand.  But despite this growing trend, fish medicine remains a very niche area within the broader veterinary profession. This shortage in veterinarians and technicians able to treat fish stems in part from a lack of education… which brings us to today’s episode, as we continue our 2024 Midwest Veterinary Conference Preview Series. We are excited to welcome Dr. Nora Hickey and Dr. Myron Kebus to the show. Our guests are slated to speak at the conference, and they're here to give us a sneak peek into their sessions and lab in the aquaculture track of programming.
