Every Day in a Scrap Metal Yard is Different with Matt Bray

The "old guy" among the new crew shared his wisdom with the Crew in the latest Dumpster Talk! Matt Bray has joined our team as an Operations Leader and has 13 years of experience in the scrap metal industry working on the front lines and in all aspects of the business. The conversation centered on many of the aspects of life in a scrap metal yard and all the items and jobs that can happen to make each day very different! One common theme among employees in a scrap metal environment is that they enjoy the variety in their day. From buying, processing and selling aluminum, copper and brass to torching steel every day can present a unique challenge depending on what comes in from our retail customers or what we bring in in our industrial rolloffs. The crew also discusses the broader financial impact on metal prices from factors in the economy. Matt discussed life as a young father with his kids and the time commitment necessary to do that job right. It's the most important job any of us have and Matt's wisdom to get established before children is a good one. It's great to have young guys teaching other young guys about what they have experienced and seen in their lives! We hope you enjoy this episode with Matt Bray and the Sahd Metal Crew!

Exploring your Purpose in Career and Life with Katie Sandoe

Careers in the metals recycling and waste industries can be difficult when considering the metal working, exposure to the elements, metal torching, baling and other jobs that must be completed to get the job done. Many employers have a hard time finding employees that want to work in these and other fields that utilize a mix of blue collar and white collar work. Enter Purpose! Katie Sandoe of Light Echo (https://lightecho.co/) visited the Dumpster and has been working with some team members on finding their purpose to help find purpose in their work and home lives. Finding purpose is as easy as answering these two questions: 1. What would you want to change about the world? 2. Who do you want to make proud? Put those two answers together to find your why and build your purpose. Katie discusses everything from gratitude, exercises to help you find your purpose and the importance of screening the advice that you get in your life. The concept of having a personal board of directors like a company does is an interesting thought as it involves vetting those whose advice matters most to you and going all in on listening to that direction and advice. Knowing who is important in your life is crucial, it is that ability to screen out the voices that are not relevant from ones that are. We love the scrap metal industry, but mostly because we love the people we work with and the people in our company. Really taking the time to explore that purpose and being open to whatever the answer is is the lesson of this Dumpster Talk!

Building an HVAC/Plumbing Business Through Relationships and Service with Axel Mechanical

A well rounded discussion on the HVAC industry in the dumpster with Laurie and Mike Burke and Nate Williams. This conversation had everything from details on the industry and best practices for homeowners to the dynamics of a family business. Axel Mechanical Services (https://www.axelmechanicalservices.com/) serves customers in York and Lancaster County in HVAC, Plumbing and Remodeling. The company is woman led and Nate offers very personal and committed customer service to those in need. Axel Mechanical works primarily on heating and air conditioning and this conversation covered a great deal of ground. From practical tips and best practices on varying processes of home heating and air conditioning to some horror stories of problems customers have solved by Axel there were plenty of details on how to have a better working HVAC system. The discussion also included many details on the coming changes in refrigerant regulations to meet sustainability goals. All of these changes will cost money and hopefully increase efficiency in our systems, but with all of the green goals, though they are well intended it's not certain that we have the capacity on the grid and the raw materials, primarily copper, aluminum and nickel to create the infastructure needed. Mike, Laurie and Nate also discussed the various elements of running a business, from billing, to scheduling and relationship building. In a people business it's all about connection, something Axel Mechanical understands well. They commit to providing excellent service because they know that reputation is everything and giving quality service is the only way to survive. We hope you enjoy this inside look on an industry that will shape our future, from the perspective of the people on the ground making it happen! #hvac #plumbing #trades #manufacturing #sustainability #electrification
