Aisling McCaffrey - The forks in the road that shaped her career
Aisling McCaffrey's first CAO choice was actuarial studies. Her second was Irish music and dance. Today she works at the Impact Investing Institute in London on why capital does not reach the places that need it, work that has recently taken her to the Ethiopian border with UNHCR and to the textile sector in India. In this episode she talks to Sinead Donovan about the two hour conversation in Australia that redirected her towards accountancy, the One Young World summit that finally gave her the language for what she cared about, and the day she sat in a room with three Grant Thornton partners and turned down the obvious promotion to build a sustainability practice that did not yet exist. In this episode: - Why a hard degree taught her more than an easy one would have - The advice that sent her into accountancy rather than humanitarian work - How the sustainable development goals turned twenty five scattered interests into a coherent purpose - Taking a leap of faith, and what it means to have people back you - Unkinking the hose, and the honest conversations that move capital - Being a hopeless optimist with a healthy dose of realism Aisling is a member of Chartered Accountants Ireland, a One Young World ambassador and an Irish international in tag and touch rugby.
