I lived under Nicolae Ceaușescu's communist regime in Romania, where speaking freely could bring devastating consequences. As a young attorney, I defended Christians persecuted for their faith. My commitment to truth and justice made me a target of the government. I was threatened, interrogated, beaten, tortured, and placed under house arrest. An assassin was even sent to my office to kill me. The regime wanted to silence my voice. But through those terrifying experiences, I discovered a life-changing truth: The government could threaten my freedom, but it could not take away my faith in God. And that faith gave me the courage to stand. Today, I am using the voice they tried to silence to encourage others to live courageously. 🎧 IN THIS EPISODE: SILENT OR SILENCED? The government wanted to silence me. But my faith in God gave me the courage to stand for truth, justice, and freedom. Today, as an American citizen, I understand something I could never take for granted: The freedom to participate in our nation's future is a precious responsibility. I know firsthand the devastating consequences of living under an authoritarian government. My experiences have shaped my lifelong commitment to religious liberty, human dignity, and the protection of fundamental freedoms. And I believe those experiences carry lessons worth sharing with the next generation. It sounds like a simple question—but when conflict becomes personal, the answer can challenge us deeply. A peacekeeper may seek to avoid conflict, maintain the appearance of harmony, or keep everyone comfortable. A peacemaker is willing to step into difficult places, confront what is broken, pursue truth, extend forgiveness, and work toward genuine reconciliation. And sometimes, peacemaking is uncomfortable. In this episode of Courageous Leadership with VIRGINIA PRODAN , we explore what it really means to choose peace—not simply to keep the peace. That question connects deeply with the story behind my memoir, Saving My Assassin. My story is about far more than legal resistance to a violent regime. It is also about what happens when we choose courage, forgiveness, faith, and a radically different response to those who seek to harm us.
