Bordeaux Unpicked: Mitjavile Family Releases

Bordeaux can feel formulaic until you encounter the Mitjaviles. In this episode, we dive into the much loved Right Bank wines of François and Louis Mitjavile - Tertre Roteboeuf, Roc de Cambes, and L’Aurage - and the radical philosophy behind them. These are wines of late-picked fruit, haunting aromatics and velvet-textured tannins, built for emotion rather than conformity. Alongside standout 2025 tastings, including a potentially benchmark L’Aurage, we explore why these wines are among Bordeaux’s unmistakable blind-tasting signatures, and why a mature Tertre Roteboeuf can humble the best of them.

Burgundy Unpicked: 2024 Domaine François Carillon

François Carillon is the 16th generation of a winemaking family which traces its Burgundian roots back to 1520. Since his first vintage in 2010, François has proven his domaine to be both a worthy successor to the much-loved wines of his father, Louis Carillon, as well as making some of the most exciting modern white Burgundies. Following the retirement of Louis, the vineyards were divided between the two sons, François and his brother Jacques. Domaine François Carillon sits in the very centre of the village of Puligny-Montrachet. The wines hit the sweet spot between pristine fruit, precise acidity and textural richness, which we adore. François’ sons Mathis and Paul have recently joined the domaine full time. The future is looking particularly rosy here. The 2024s were harvested earlier than usual, in the first two weeks of September by a team of 50 pickers. The grapes were immediately pressed on reception, and the juice was left in tank to cool prior to fermentation. The majority of barrels used are 350-litre capacity. Always looking to expand his horizons, François has also produced a Beaujolais Blanc this year.Corney & Barrow has been the domaine’s exclusive UK agent since the inaugural 2010 vintage and are proud to work with the wines in Hong Kong, Singapore and Shanghai

Burgundy Unpicked: 2024 Château de la Tour

In this episode, Joe and Guy are joined by René to discuss the 2024 vintage en primeur release of Château de la Tour.Established in 1890, Château de la Tour is the largest proprietor of the Clos de Vougeot. This may just be the most complete expression of the mighty Clos, as the the domaine’s 5.5 hectares represent 11% of the appellation. The château itself is one of only three buildings in the Clos de Vougeot. The domaine was passed down from François Labet’s mother’s family. Today, it is run by father and son team François and Édouard.Château de la Tour lost an awful 60% of its crop in 2024. The final yield, after two lots of sorting, was just 19hl/ha. Whole-bunch fermentation was kept to a maximum of 20%. Fortunately, there is no lack of natural power in the Clos de Vougeot and in 2024, that power has been rendered rather wonderfully into a sweet-fruited approachability and a suppleness of expression that allows the terroir character full visibility.

Burgundy Unpicked: 2023 Domaine de la Romanée-Conti

The ambition of attempting to describe the Domaine de la Romanée-Conti's 2023 vintage in just one word is absurd, but there is an elemental quality to these wines that takes them beyond the other recent great solar vintages of 2018, 2019, 2020, 2022, and into something unique. The magic lies in the individual vineyards' ability to remain faithful, even transparent, to their sense of place, their individual terroirs. Join Guy, Will and Joe as they discuss this "primordial" vintage and their impressions of each of the Domaine's wines. The team also discusses what is drinking well and what they predict to be ready to drink soon...

Burgundy Unpicked: 2024 Vintage Report

It's time for one of the most anticipated episodes of the year! Guy (Head of Fine Wine Buying) and Joe (Head of Monopole) are back in the studio with Will (Head of Fine Wine Sales), to discuss the 2024 Burgundy vintage. Following on from their many visits to the region, the team gives a detailed insight into the 2024 growing season, samples tasted and comparable vintages. The team is hugely excited about the 2024s, which are elegant and fresh. The cooler season has made for a traditional style that will appeal to Burgundy lovers seeking aroma, verve and fresh drinkability. The whites deliver chiselled citrus fruit with an impressive acid backbone — the best will rival the 2014s. Burgundy’s 2024 wet spring and summer hit yields, particularly of Pinot Noir in the Côte de Nuits. By contrast, the hardier Chardonnay grapes saw near-normal volumes in places, albeit with notable exceptions in Chablis, due to frost and hail, and parts of Puligny-Montrachet.  However, sustained spells of sunny, breezy weather in August and September kept the vines healthy and brought ripeness over the line. The 2024s are wines of panache that have a place in every Burgundy collection.
