The Belfast Riot of 1847: Bloodshed, Land, and Legacy in PEI – with Author Callum Beck

In this gripping episode, we explore one of Prince Edward Island’s darkest and most hidden historical events — the Belfast Riot of 1847. Host David Cyrus MacDonald is joined by Calum Beck, author of The Belfast Riot of 1847, for a deep dive into the legacy of violence, power struggles, and the land conflicts that shaped PEI’s history.Imagine a clash so brutal it ended in bloodshed, dividing communities for generations. Back in 1847, factions fought to the death with lumber and fence posts over the appointment of a land agent for Scottish Lord Selkirk — a man who owned over 100,000 acres of PEI. The riot claimed lives, caused lasting trauma, and created a ripple effect that’s still felt in Island memory today.Calum Beck uncovers the full story, bringing forward a buried chapter of Island history — one that’s both shocking and essential to understanding how PEI developed into the community it is today.📌 Host:David Cyrus MacDonald, REALTOR® w/ RE/MAX Charlottetown📞 902.940.5455📧 cyrusmacd@gmail.com🌐 www.davidcyrusmacdonald.com📌 Guest:Calum Beck | Author of The Belfast Riot of 1847Calum shares insights on:✔️ The roots of the Belfast Riot and its political backdrop✔️ The powerful role of land agents and absentee landlords✔️ William Douse’s controversial legacy✔️ How these events shaped PEI’s land ownership, governance, and social fabric🎧 Listen now for a powerful journey into PEI’s past — a must-hear for history buffs, Islanders, and anyone curious about how land, power, and people collided in 1847.📍 Check out David Cyrus MacDonald Real Estate’s Google Profile and reviews:🔗 https://g.co/kgs/ghBYvL2🔔 Don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more local stories that matter.#BelfastRiot1847 #PEIHistory #CalumBeck #RealPEIPodcast #PrinceEdwardIsland #CanadianHistory #DavidCyrusMacDonald #REMAXCharlottetown #IslandStories

PEI History from the Sky! w/Joshua MacFadyen

Host:David Cyrus MacDonald | RE/MAX Charlottetown902.940.5455cyrusmacd@gmail.cominstagram.com/cyrusmacdGuest:Joshua MacFadyenUniversity of Prince Edward Islandupei.ca/timefliesTime Flies: A History of Prince Edward Island from the AirOrder it from Indigo:https://www.indigo.ca/en-ca/time-flies-a-history-of-prince-edward-island-from-the-air/9781988692647.htmlJoshua MacFadyen is the ACLC Teaching and Research Team and Canada Research Chair in Geospatial Humanities in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Prince Edward Island and is also an Affiliate Global Futures Scholar at Arizona State University.I just received Joshua’s new book, Time Flies: A History of Prince Edward Island from the Air in the mail last week and I am finding it fascinating. It goes through the history of PEI using old and new aerial photographs. This book approaches PEI from a multi-generational timeline perspective. For example, it talks about the roads, when they were built and why. It goes through the major long-term trends and changes in our primary industries like farming and fisheries, rural communities and infrastructure, urban development and coastal change. It goes through big population booms and busts, speculative investing in fox farming, the introduction of the trans-Canada highway, the banning of the automobile and so much more.I would recommend this book to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of why PEI is the way it is.On a personal level I have known Josh for quite a while through his sister Kathleen who is married to John MacPhee, the singer in my band Paper Lions. We used to visit Josh and Colleen and their four kids when we were performing in Kitchener Waterloo, Ontario. That time was all about fun, music, family, but this is my first time getting to dive into Joshua’s work as a scholar and apply it to my understanding of PEI and how that might apply to homeowners, REALTORS®, and all residents or visitors to this unique part of the earth.Thank you for listening to Chattel Fixtures: PEI Real Estate Podcastwww.chattelfixtures.comwww.davidcyrusmacdonald.com
