How Grey Space Advisory scaled: pricing, acquisitions and the processes that broke | Operators #2

What breaks first when a service business grows: pricing, people or process? In this Australian Business Podcast Operator Series episode, Owen Rask goes behind the scenes with Danil Goloubev, co-founder of Grey Space Advisory, to unpack how an accounting practice moves beyond compliance and builds a business that can keep serving clients as it scales. Danil explains how a shared ambition with co-founder Jordan Kidis became a firm designed to be bigger than either founder. They began with referrals, learned from a shared workspace and gradually added content and other lead sources. But bringing in more clients was not the whole story. The team had to think hard about capacity, pricing and what owners actually value from an accountant who can help them look forward, not just lodge last year’s paperwork. Owen presses Danil on fixed recurring fees, tailored advisory work and the metrics he watches inside the business. They also get candid about buying other accounting practices: what went wrong in the first acquisition, why client fit and staff due diligence matter, and how better service and pricing changed the economics of the clients they kept. As the team grew, so did the need for clearer handovers, training and leadership. Danil describes where an old process stops working at higher volume, why collaboration in the office matters to him, and how a wider leadership group helps people own the next stage. For founders and operators, this is a practical conversation about building systems without losing the people behind the business. $1 million ARR: Navexa's story of hustle, code and AI | Operators #1

Check out the Navexa YouTube channel. What happens when the cheap option doesn’t sell? In the first Operators episode of the Australian Business Podcast, Owen Rask speaks with Navarre Trousselot, founder of investment software business Navexa, about building a product, finding customers and learning which growth channels actually pay for themselves. Navarre began building a portfolio analytics tool to answer his own investing questions. A side project became a business after others wanted to use it, but the first paid launch delivered a bruising lesson: people who liked a free product did not necessarily want to pay. Competing on price did not solve the harder problem of showing customers the value of accurate performance tracking and tax reporting. Owen and Navarre unpack why paid ads that worked for one business made less sense for a subscription product with slower cash payback. They discuss how spreadsheets, accountants and established software compete for customers’ attention, and why educating everyone can be less effective than reaching people who already know they have the problem. Navarre also shares how a previous podcast appearance helped Navexa find an audience once the product was ready, why YouTube has become a promising customer channel, and how a small team keeps its work focused with one weekly meeting. The conversation closes on AI, product development and the choices behind scaling without losing what makes the business worth building. If you run a business, this is a practical conversation about pricing for value, watching cash flow and making sure your product can deliver when your marketing finally works. How AI agents are changing business - Ep 2: The Business Stack of the Future

This episode was originally featured on the Australian Investors Podcast. In this episode of the Australian Business Podcast, Owen Rask speaks with Jon Stahl from Salesforce about how AI agents are moving beyond answering questions and starting to complete real work inside businesses. Jon explains the difference between a chatbot and an agent, including how agents can reason through multistep tasks, call tools and APIs, update business systems and retain useful context. He shares where the technology is already creating value across customer service, software development, research, order management and commerce. The conversation also tackles the controls businesses need before giving an AI agent meaningful autonomy. Jon compares an agent to the “world’s smartest but least experienced intern” and explains why permissions, clear identities, audit logs, hard-coded guardrails and human escalation remain essential. Owen and Jon then explore what must happen before agents can safely buy products or make payments on our behalf. That includes verified authority, spending limits, tokenised payment credentials, merchant recognition and common standards across the payments ecosystem — challenges that cannot be solved by a smarter language model alone. Finally, Jon separates the hype from the practical opportunity. Fully autonomous shopping is still largely experimental, while brand, trust and storefronts remain important. He also explains why trusted business data can dramatically improve an agent’s usefulness, and how businesses may soon use agents to resolve delayed orders, enrich product catalogues, support sales teams and help employees build their own tools. Senator Andrew Bragg on housing, tax and Australia’s productivity problem

This episode was originally featured on the Australian Investors Podcast. In this episode, Owen Rask sits down with Senator Andrew Bragg for a wide-ranging conversation about the Federal Budget, housing supply, tax, productivity and why so many Australians feel the country has become harder to get ahead in. Rather than getting stuck in party talking points, they focus on the practical questions investors, business owners and workers are asking right now: what happens when policy makes it harder to build homes, why does productivity matter so much for living standards, and how do taxes, regulation and incentives shape whether Australia creates more wealth or simply fights over what already exists? Andrew explains why he believes cutting housing supply is one of the worst policy choices Australia can make, how rising rents, higher rates and broader cost-of-living pressure are changing the national mood, and why small business, private investment and simpler rules still matter if Australia wants to stay competitive. The conversation also touches on super, the role of large institutions, and why clearer economic thinking matters more when confidence is low. Owen pushes on the bigger picture too: whether Australia has lost ambition, why the policy debate feels less honest than it should, and what needs to change if Australians want better opportunities over the next decade. If you want a plain-English discussion about housing, tax, productivity, competitiveness and the long-run direction of Australia, this is a timely episode to queue next. My 10 Rules of Business [10/10]

In the final episode of The Australian Business Podcast Summer Series, Owen Rask delivers his definitive close: 10 rules that shape how he builds businesses. Business is the greatest self-development program you’ll ever enrol in. From “the struggle is the job” to “upgrade yourself faster than your business grows,” this episode distils a decade of scar tissue into practical, unfiltered principles. You’ll hear why revenue is vanity but cashflow is oxygen. Why systems beat heroics. Why strategy is subtraction. Why talent density wins. And why scaling chaos only multiplies chaos. Owen also explores the personal side of ownership — anxiety, identity, burnout and decision fatigue — and why founders must separate self-worth from business performance. The episode closes with a powerful reminder: the ultimate constraint on growth isn’t capital, competition or technology. It’s the founder. Upgrade yourself — or your business stops growing. Topics covered • The struggle is the job • Building a business that serves your life • Strategy as subtraction • Revenue vs cashflow reality • Systems vs heroics • Talent density and leadership • Protecting your equity • Founder self-development Episode Resources • Join Rask’s business community • Rask’s Australian Business Podcast • Rask Business 101 (free course) ~~ Rask Resources ~~ 🔗 Explore all Rask services 📋 Get Financial Planning 📈 Start investing with Rask 📜 Access Show Notes ❓ Ask a question – just select the Investors Podcast 📲 Follow us on social media: – Instagram: @rask.invest – TikTok: @rask.invest DISCLAIMER This podcast contains general financial information only. Equity, founders & moats [9/10]

In this episode of The Australian Business Podcast Summer Series, Owen Rask dives into a topic most founders avoid until it’s too late: ownership. You’ve built the product. You’ve hired the team. You’ve scaled revenue. But do you actually understand dilution, valuation mechanics, investor alignment or optionality? Owen breaks down the realities of bootstrapping versus raising capital, debt versus equity, and how valuations are actually determined. This isn’t startup hype — it’s a practical guide to understanding how equity decisions shape long-term wealth. The episode explores when to sell equity, how to design effective employee share plans (ESOPs), and why “strategic money” is more valuable than “dumb money”. Founders must think beyond growth — they must think about defensibility, incentives and long-term optionality. Owen also addresses the deeper strategic question: are you building a business that can’t be killed? That means competitive moats, distribution advantage, brand equity, switching costs, regulatory protection and recurring revenue models. Because scaling is one thing. Defending what you’ve built is another. Topics covered in this Australian Business Podcast episode • Bootstrapping vs raising capital • Debt vs equity decision-making • How valuations are really determined • When to sell equity • Designing effective ESOPs • Strategic investors vs dumb money • Competitive moats and defensibility • Protecting founder optionality Episode Resources • Join Rask’s business community • Rask’s Australian Business Podcast • Rask Business 101 (free course) Rask Resources 🔗 Explore all Rask services 📋 Get Financial Planning 📈 Start investing with Rask 📜 Access Show Notes ❓ Ask a question – just select the Investors Podcast 📲 Follow us on social media: – Instagram: @rask.invest – TikTok: @rask.invest DISCLAIMER This podcast contains general financial information only. Scaling. A masterclass. [8/10]

In this episode of The Australian Business Podcast Summer Series, Owen Rask delivers a deeply practical masterclass on scaling — not theory, but scar tissue. Growth is optional. Scaling is painful. And most businesses break here. Scaling isn’t just increasing revenue. It’s increasing revenue faster than costs increase. In practice, that means more complexity, more people, less control, more capital at risk and exponentially higher psychological pressure. This is where culture fractures, margins compress, founders lose clarity and politics creeps in. Owen breaks down the six pain points that crush scaling companies: becoming the bottleneck, exponential complexity, culture dilution, cashflow danger, founder identity crisis and decision-making paralysis. Drawing on lessons from The E-Myth, High Growth Handbook and The Hard Thing About Hard Things, he explains why scaling forces founders to stop being operators and start becoming capital allocators and system designers. The episode also introduces the concept of upgrading yourself before you upgrade the business. That means defining decision rights, building systems before they hurt, focusing on one or two existential priorities and protecting your core business. Scaling chaos only magnifies chaos. Using Rask as a case study — 38,000 students, 60,000 account holders, 250,000 listeners and growing — Owen outlines what it actually takes to build towards a $10–20 million run rate without bravado. Just discipline, systems and painful lessons. If you’re building something meaningful, this episode is essential listening. The goal is to stop being the one who does the work and start being the one who designs the system. Upgrade Your Network and Environment (Shift from Operator to Allocator) Your environment should reflect the scale you are aiming for ($30–$50 million valuation). Upgrade Your Leadership (Shift from Operator to Psychologist) Your highest function is managing the anxiety, clarity, and direction of the team.
