We discuss the upcoming elections in Texas, and the amounts of money spent: Elon Musk spent at least $185M to beat Talarico, and Greg Abbott spent at least $40 M to beat Hinojosa. Trump has visited Texas several times, though Abbott has not shared the stage with Trump. The issues that Texans are concerned about are homeowners' insurance, health care, and others. Texans seem to be ready to change. Part 2: We talk with Bill Curry and Robert Hockett. Curry was a two time candidate for Governor of Connecticut, and a White House staffer, and Hockett is a Professor of Law at Cornell University. We discuss the campaign that Trump has been running, purportedly on behalf of Republican candidates. He is unpopular, so he seems to have done a lot of work for the Democrats. Even among the wealthy, there is a huge gap between the mere millionaires and billionaires. This is primarily due to tax policy. Part of it is lack of enforcement, and the ability of the billionaires to WRITE tax policy through their loyal lawmakers. Part 2 Jonathan Feingold Ep. 74 | Trump's Tax Plan to Resegregate Higher Ed Arnie and Jon discussing Trump's new plan to leverage the IRS to resegregate higher education. The effort echoes Christopher Rufo's call for the Trump administration to industrialize its assault on higher education by exerting existential pressure on universities. In real respects, the proposed IRS regulation could advance Trump's desire to push Black and brown students our of higher education and entrench racist tropes about who's got intellectual chops and who doesn't. But the regulation's actual text does something unexpected. It's designed to eliminate lawful DEI, but it actually creates liability for universities that employ practices that disparately harm students of color — things the Trump admin wants like legacy preferences standardized tests.
