Money, Marriage and Menopause: When Relationships Change - EP 171

Rebecca often asks clients whether they've spoken to their partner about money, and quite a few tell her they haven't managed to. She wanted to explore that with Susie Heath. Their conversation covers everything from the money stories they grew up with to menopause, sex and what they want from the next part of their lives. This week Rebecca is joined by Susie Heath, author, speaker, relationship and intimacy coach and embodiment pioneer. They talk about the money stories people bring from childhood, the frustration of feeling unheard, and how relationships change over time. Rebecca shares some of her own experiences of menopause and married life, and Susie gets her out of her chair to try some movement exercises. They also talk about appreciation, intimacy and making time to enjoy being together. Rebecca raises the difference between struggling to communicate and being in a controlling or abusive relationship, where safety and specialist support matter. They discuss the difficult point where someone feels they've tried everything and is considering leaving. In the opening Edit, Rebecca looks at divorce research, overlooked pensions and the emotional pull of keeping the family home. In this episode: ● How childhood experiences shape our relationship with money ● Menopause, changing expectations and finding your voice ● Choosing a better moment for difficult conversations ● Susie's movement exercises for releasing tension ● Sex, intimacy and asking for what you need ● Appreciation and the small things that help us feel valued ● Bringing both partners into financial and retirement planning ● Finding enjoyment beyond the next holiday ● Safety, counselling and the difficult question of separation Chapters: 00:00 The Edit: Divorce, pensions and the family home 03:50 Introducing Susie Heath 07:20 Welcome to the conversation 08:49 The money stories we inherit from childhood 14:21 Changing roles and expectations in relationships 17:53 Why relationships need tending 20:08 Menopause, anger and finding your voice 25:39 Making time for difficult conversations 27:47 Movement exercises to release tension 35:27 Sex, intimacy and asking for what you need 41:18 Connection, appreciation and feeling valued 45:27 Money conversations, financial abuse and planning together 48:38 Talking about money before problems build 52:50 Retirement and rediscovering what brings you joy 57:41 Different money habits and finding common ground 01:03:03 Knowing when enough is enough: safety, counselling and divorce 01:11:49 Feminine identity and changing roles at home 01:18:34 How to connect with Susie 01:19:37 When separating is the right outcome Watch and listen: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@rebeccarobertsonifa Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3R1YtF0SZYUaP8HY5zPpMr?si=df572d19e168406c Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/accelerating-your-wealth/id978095147 Connect with Susie Heath: Susie Heath | Author, Speaker, Relationship & Intimacy Coach, Embodiment Pioneer Susie Heath has spent over 25 years helping people rediscover who they really are, reconnect with their bodies and create lives and relationships that feel deliciously alive. Money, Marriage & Motherhood: How Not to Get Financially F*cked Over | Liz Harrington | Ep 170

What changes financially when relationships get serious, children arrive and one person starts carrying more of the long-term cost? This week Rebecca is joined by Liz Harrington, founder of Family Flow: The Divorce Collective and author of Money, Marriage & Motherhood: How NOT To Get F*cked Over. They talk about the money conversations couples often avoid, why financial independence matters before and during a relationship, and how choices around marriage, children, work and childcare can shape a woman's finances for years. They explore cohabitation and the lack of protection many unmarried couples assume they have, how prenups can be used as a practical conversation rather than a threat, the long-term financial impact of stepping back from work, and why unpaid caring responsibilities still matter when pensions and assets are divided later. In The Weekly Edit, Rebecca also shares her own frightening experience of attempted bank fraud, looks at why money is making some younger men hesitant about marriage, and discusses why a 50-50 split in divorce does not always create an equal financial future. In this episode: ● Why financial independence matters before marriage, motherhood and major relationship decisions ● Cohabitation, the protection unmarried couples may not have and why agreements matter ● How to approach prenups as a shared financial conversation rather than planning for failure ● Why avoiding conversations about money can store up much bigger problems later ● The career, pension and earning impact of motherhood, childcare and stepping back from work ● Why the contribution of a stay-at-home or lower-earning partner still has financial value ● The financial red flags Liz sees repeatedly, including control around money Chapters: 00:00 The Weekly Edit 10:02 Money, Marriage & Motherhood with Liz Harrington 16:59 Why Liz wrote the book and the conversations she wants couples to have 18:35 Cohabitation, legal protection and financial independence 22:31 Prenups and the money conversations couples avoid 31:26 Why money problems and control can push relationships towards divorce 35:20 Motherhood, career breaks and the financial penalty 44:28 Childcare, flexible work and the long-term cost of stepping back 53:16 Financial independence, relationships and knowing when to walk away 01:00:07 Pensions, divorce and the value of unpaid care 01:03:59 Financial red flags, coercive control and money 01:07:38 Money, Marriage & Motherhood: the waitlist and final advice Divorce Without Financial Regret webinar: https://evolutionfinancialplanning.co.uk/divorce-without-financial-regret/ Get The Edit: Rebecca's weekly newsletter https://preview.mailerlite.io/forms/1977165/175302754404664375/share Watch and listen: YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@rebeccarobertsonifa Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/3R1YtF0SZYUaP8HY5zPpMr?si=df572d19e168406c Apple: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/accelerating-your-wealth/id978095147 Liz Harrington: Liz Harrington helps women avoid getting financially f*cked over by love, and for those who already have, she helps them rebuild. As Founder of Family Flow: The Divorce Collective, she has seen firsthand what happens when couples never have the deeper conversations about money, and how much life changes over time, especially once kids arrive. Her book, Money, Marriage & Motherhood: How NOT To Get F*cked Over, brings those conversations forward to help women and couples build safety, independence and a fairer, more trusting partnership before resentment sets in and before life makes decisions neither person chose. The Cost of Silence: Why Couples Need to Talk About Money | Ep 169

Why can money be one of the hardest things to talk about with the person you share your life with? This week Rebecca looks at the cost of staying silent about money in relationships, from hidden debt and secret spending to unequal household costs, conflicting money values and the resentment that can build when couples avoid difficult conversations. She explores why our upbringing can shape the way we think and talk about money, how financial control can become a warning sign in a relationship, and how to approach a difficult conversation without turning it into an accusation or argument. Rebecca also shares the five money conversations every couple should be having: what financial security means to each of you, how household costs are divided, your shared goals, whether you are adequately protected and how changing life stages can affect both partners financially. In this episode: ● Why couples can find money harder to talk about than other personal subjects ● How upbringing, values and previous experiences shape the way we approach money ● Hidden debt, secret spending and the idea of financial infidelity ● Financial control, coercion and why some money conversations need to be approached carefully ● How to start a difficult money conversation without blame or accusation ● Why 50-50 is not always the fairest way to divide household costs ● The five money conversations couples should be having regularly Chapters: 00:00 The Weekly Edit 06:56 The Cost of Silence: Why Couples Need to Talk About Money 11:40 Why money is still a taboo subject 16:25 Financial infidelity, hidden debt and secret spending 21:10 How to start difficult money conversations 25:45 Splitting household costs fairly 29:35 Shared goals, protection and financial security 32:45 The cost of staying silent Want to know where you stand with your finances? How ADHD Can Mess With Your Money: Impulse Spending, Admin & the ADHD Tax | Ep 168

Does money admin disappear from your brain the moment it is out of sight? Do you put off opening an email, forget a renewal or buy something for the quick dopamine hit and wonder later why you wanted it? This week Rebecca is joined by Katie Mansey for a practical conversation about the ways ADHD and other neurodivergent traits can affect money, from impulse spending and avoiding financial admin to working memory, shame and the hidden costs of forgetfulness. Rebecca and Katie share examples from their own lives, including missed insurance admin, piles of paperwork, online shopping baskets and the systems they use to make things easier. They also look at how neurodiversity can affect confidence at work, asking for pay rises or charging appropriate fees. The conversation finishes with simple ways to work with your brain rather than against it: automating what you can, making money visible, using separate pots, scheduling a regular money date and getting support when you need it. In this episode: ● How ADHD, dyslexia and autism can affect working memory, routines and financial admin ● The "ADHD tax": missed renewals, forgotten subscriptions, late payments and other hidden costs ● Why shame, overwhelm and avoidance can make money tasks harder to deal with ● Impulse spending, dopamine and using a cooling-off period before buying ● How neurodiversity can affect confidence at work, pay rises and what you charge ● Practical ways to automate money, use separate pots and make finances more visible ● Money dates, accountability, body doubling and other ways to build support around you Chapters: 00:00 The Weekly Edit: budget speculation, CGT, savings and F.I.R.E (Financial Independence, Retire Early) 10:20 How ADHD can mess with your money 17:11 The ADHD tax, missed admin and financial shame 23:34 Impulse spending and the dopamine hit 32:17 Avoiding financial admin and putting things off 37:23 The hidden costs of forgetfulness 45:07 Undervaluing yourself at work 48:58 Hyperfocus on today instead of future-you 49:28 Automating your money and creating separate pots 52:42 Making money visible 56:52 Building a support team and using body doubling Want to know where you stand with your finances? Resting Bitch Face: What Are You Missing Out On? Confidence, Money & First Impressions | Ep 167

Have you ever looked at someone on the school run and thought they looked a bit unfriendly, only to discover they were just as intimidated by you? This week Rebecca is joined by Katie Mansey, her client manager of eight or nine years and new regular co-host, for a conversation about first impressions, confidence, money and the people we surround ourselves with. It starts with the school run and the assumptions we make about other women. Rebecca talks about withdrawing when she feels uncomfortable, while Katie shares her experience of being bullied at school. They discuss how those feelings can follow us into adulthood, sometimes affecting whether we speak up, ask for a pay rise or put ourselves forward for an opportunity. They also get into recognising your own achievements, questioning the limits you put on yourself and the part other people can play in your success. And there is plenty of chat about asking for help, poo picking and the everyday things that take up more time than you realise. In this episode: · First impressions, resting bitch face and why we might misread one another · How experiences at school can affect confidence later in life · Why self-doubt can influence pay rises, promotions and other money decisions · What it means to recognise your own achievements and question your financial ceiling · How the people around you can affect the choices you make · Working in a way that makes the most of your strengths, and asking for help when you need it · Making time for what matters to you, from work to home and the horses Chapters: 00:00 Introducing Katie, Rebecca's new co-host 04:03 Relationships, money and why your network matters 09:45 Resting bitch face, first impressions and the school run 13:20 How self-doubt affects confidence, careers and money 21:30 Financial ceilings and recognising your own success 26:00 Working smarter, building your team and asking for help 38:00 Freeing up time and headspace for what matters 42:20 The Weekly Edit, investing and generational wealth Want to know where you stand with your finances? Why I'm Changing the Podcast: Money, Relationships and Showing Up as Yourself

Sometimes showing up means doing it in your jim jams, with a cup of tea and a Highland cow mug. This episode of Accelerating Your Wealth is a little different. Rebecca is recording from home, without the London studio, the polished setup or everything looking perfect. And that is partly the point. After experimenting with a more produced version of the podcast, Rebecca talks about why the show is shifting again, what she has learned from the past year, and why she wants to bring more real-life conversations back into it. The theme for the next few months is relationships: our relationship with money, with ourselves, with our partners and with the people around us. In this episode: Why Accelerating Your Wealth is moving away from the polished studio format What Rebecca learned from trying to make the podcast look and feel more "professional" Why showing up imperfectly can sometimes be more useful than waiting until everything is right What the Summer Reset taught Rebecca about the conversations people engage with The new focus on relationships, money and the psychology behind both What is coming up around divorce, relationships and money later this year Why Rebecca is still working on her own money mindset after 26 years in financial services The financial "ceiling" we can place on ourselves without realising it Dreaming bigger, and working out what success actually looks like for you Why books, learning and Rebecca's own experiences will become a bigger part of the show A look back at the podcast, its back catalogue and some of the episodes listeners continue to return to Timestamps: 00:00 Welcome, the jim jams and what is changing 04:19 Showing up when everything isn't perfect 08:41 Why the London studio format stopped working 12:10 Bringing more of "Becky with a cup of tea" back to the podcast 15:46 Relationships, money and what's coming next 20:04 Divorce, books and working on your relationship with money 23:59 Money ceilings, dreaming bigger and defining success 27:54 What Rebecca is learning now and what's coming up on the show Want to know where you stand with your finances? And if Rebecca sometimes turns up in her jim jams with a cup of tea, that's part of it too.

Breaking Money Taboos: The Conversations Women Need to Have

Name a powerful woman with money from your childhood. A role model from the films and stories you grew up with. The only one we could come up with was Cruella de Vil, a villain who wanted to turn puppies into a coat. Every other story gave us princesses waiting to be rescued. This is the final episode of our Summer Reset, the 6-part summer series where Rebecca is joined by her Evolution Financial Planning colleagues Katie, Client Manager and Protection Adviser, and Carol Wright, Independent Financial Adviser and Money Coach. In this episode: Why money is still a taboo subject for so many women, and what the silence costs The other side of it: male pride, and the £5,000 credit card that never gets mentioned Where the "women are bad with money" story comes from, and how recent that history really is Money blocks: the beliefs running quietly in the background before you can question them The Cruella de Vil problem, and what happens when your only wealthy female role model is a villain What we honestly think when we see a woman who is visibly wealthy, and why the reaction isn't about her Women, inheritance and the wealth transfer ahead The questions to start asking yourself, beginning with "what would happen financially if..." Property, Protection and Power: The Foundations of Women's Wealth

"He always told her, you'll be sorted." Then he died. They weren't married, and there was no evidence he had ever added her to his pension. This is episode 3 of our Summer Reset, the 6-part summer series where Rebecca is joined by her Evolution Financial Planning colleagues Katie, Client Manager and Protection Adviser, and Carol, Independent Financial Adviser and Money Coach.
