🎙️ EP9 Off Topic but on Point. Who taught you to act this way?

Episode Notes Have you ever overreacted in a moment and later thought, “Why did I respond like that?” That is where this episode starts. * Not with blame. * Not with shame. * Not with the idea that something is wrong with you. More with the honest awareness that our reactions do not come from nowhere. We are not just “like this.” We were shaped. We observed. We copied. We survived. We adapted. Somewhere along the way, our nervous system, our environment, our family, our culture, our trauma, our workplace, or even our mentors taught us how to respond. The real question is not only, “Why did I react that way?” The deeper question is: Who taught me to react that way? In this episode of Off Topic but On Point , Dr. Janine Do Cabo, Odette de Beer, and Pastor Christo Pretorius unpack the difference between reacting automatically and responding intentionally. The conversation moves through inherited responses, triggers, emotional protection, learned behaviour, family patterns, parenting, marriage, leadership, sarcasm, defensiveness, performance, control, silence, humour, and the moments where we suddenly realise, “I do not want to respond like this anymore.” And that moment matters. * That moment is not failure. * That moment is awareness. * And awareness is where intentional change begins. Your first reaction tells a story, but it does not have to write your future. The episode opens with a very human question: have you ever reacted in a way that made you pause afterwards and ask yourself where that came from? Pastor Christo shares a moment in leadership where an intense conversation with a manager suddenly reminded him of behaviour he had seen years before. In that moment, he recognised the pattern. He stopped the conversation, apologised, sat down, and chose to reframe the discussion. It was not just a reaction. It was a learned response showing up in real time. That is the power of awareness. Sometimes you see yourself while you are reacting, and in that split second you get the chance to choose again. Odette shares honestly about the younger version of herself that could go from zero to one hundred very quickly. During pregnancy, in a moment with her husband, she suddenly realised that this way of reacting was not something she wanted to carry into motherhood. She had to ask herself, “Is this how I want to respond with my children one day?” That became the first layer of the conversation: many of our reactions are conditioned responses, not random personality traits. We often say, “This is just how I am.”The better question is, “Is this who I want to keep becoming?” It may be who you learned to be, but it does not have to be who you choose to remain. Where Do Our Reactions Come From? A major part of the episode looks at the origins of our reactions. Some reactions are inherited from our families. We saw how conflict was handled. We saw whether people shouted, withdrew, controlled, ignored, performed, apologised, or never apologised. We learned whether crying was allowed, whether emotions were safe, whether mistakes were punished, and whether being excellent was the price of being accepted. Some reactions come from our environment. The office, the church, the school, the community, the culture, and the country we grew up in all shape what we see as normal. Odette speaks about collective conditioning and how moving to Australia made her realise how direct South Africans can be. What feels normal in one culture may feel harsh in another. We often only notice our conditioning when we step into a different environment. Pastor Christo brings in the five senses and shares a story about his son eating lemon. He had taught his son that lemon tasted good, so when someone expected the child to pull a face, he simply smiled. The point was simple but powerful: children mimic what they see, hear, taste, smell, and feel. They are not only listening to what we say. They are absorbing how we respond. That is why this conversation matters so deeply. Our reactions are not only about us. They become the blueprint the people around us may inherit. As Janine reflects in the episode, our children are watching how we deal with trauma, stress, financial pressure, conflict, disappointment, and people. They are inheriting some of our responses. That awareness should not crush us. It should wake us up. You are not only reacting. You may be teaching someone else how to respond. Mentors, Manners, and Mayhem One of the key summaries from the episode is that our reactions often come from three places: * Mentors: the people we looked up to, copied, admired, or followed. * Manners: the behaviours, etiquette, and habits we picked up over time because they were rewarded or accepted. * Mayhem: the trauma, pressure, pain, instability, and hard seasons that shaped the way we learned to protect ourselves. This is such an important insight. Not all learned responses come from obvious trauma. Some came from respected people. Some came from professional environments. Some came from family systems. Some came from survival. Some came from moments where we decided, consciously or unconsciously, “This is how I stay safe.” Then life changes. The environment changes. The relationships change. The old response no longer fits the new person we are becoming. That is when we need to ask: * Does this response still serve me? * Does it serve my family? * Does it serve my future? * Does it serve the room I am in now? A response that once protected you can later restrict you. Inherited Responses and Identity Odette speaks openly about learning that performance meant acceptance. Excellence became part of how she understood love, value, and belonging. It served her for a while, until it became exhausting. If feedback touched her work, it felt like it was touching her identity. That is one of the strongest parts of the episode. Many of us are not reacting to what is happening right now. We are reacting to what the moment touches inside of us. If correction feels like rejection, the reaction will be bigger than the conversation. If feedback feels like failure, the body will defend identity instead of receiving input. If interruption feels like being unheard, the person interrupting may receive a reaction that belongs to a much older wound. This is where triggers enter the conversation. A trigger is not only the event.A trigger is what the event touches. Truth bomb: The interruption is not always the issue. Sometimes the old wound is the issue. Pastor Christo also speaks about recognising parts of his parents in himself. Some things he once resisted, he has learned to embrace. Other things he still intentionally works to change. That is a mature way of looking at inherited responses. We do not have to reject everything we came from. We can choose what we carry forward and what no longer serves the future of our family. Maturity is knowing what to honour, what to heal, and what to stop handing down. Triggers: What Are You Actually Protecting? The episode then moves into one of the most practical questions: What is your reaction trying to protect? * Anger may be protecting hurt. * Sarcasm may be protecting pain. * Silence may be protecting vulnerability. * Control may be protecting fear. * Humour may be protecting discomfort. This is where the conversation becomes deeply useful. A person may think, “I am just angry.”The better question is, “What did this touch?” A person may think, “I am just sarcastic.”The better question is, “What am I trying not to say directly?” A person may think, “I am just quiet.”The better question is, “Where did I learn that silence keeps me safe?” Pastor Christo shares that his wife helped him see how defensive he had become. At first, his natural response was to say, “I am not defensive. I am just explaining my side.” Then he recognised that there had been a long season in his life where he constantly had to justify ideas, decisions, and execution. Defensiveness had become a learned protection. Dr. Janine shares that sarcasm used to be her response to hurt. The sarcasm was not really about being funny. It was a signal that something had touched a painful place. That awareness created space to pause and choose differently. That is the work. * Not to shame the reaction. * To read it. * To understand it. * To ask what it is protecting. * Then to decide whether it still belongs in your future. Your reaction may be the smoke. The wound is often the fire. Why Do We Stay in Automatic Reactions? The episode does not stop at awareness. It asks why people stay in these patterns. Sometimes people do not change because they are not aware. You cannot change what you do not notice. Sometimes ego keeps people in the same place. If I admit I reacted badly, I may have to admit I was wrong. So instead of changing, I justify. Sometimes familiarity keeps us stuck. The reaction feels normal, even when it is unhealthy. Sometimes speed keeps us stuck. We move into fight, flight, freeze, or defence so quickly that we repeat the same response before we have chosen anything. Odette adds another powerful layer: sometimes people do not know how to respond differently. Awareness says, “This is not good.” Tools say, “Here is what I can do next.” Then she adds the part people often do not want to hear: sometimes people stay in a response because it serves them. Victimhood may bring sympathy. Sarcasm may bring power. Control may create a sense of safety. Anger may keep people at a distance. That is an uncomfortable truth, but it is necessary. At some point, our learned behaviours become choices. We can no longer say, “This is just how I am,” when we have already seen the pattern and know it is hurting the future. Once you become aware of the pattern, staying there becomes a choice. 10 IN10TIONAL Minutes with Janine is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. The Question That Changes Everything Pastor Christo shares a question that deeply shaped him: Is this what you want? * Not, “Is this right?” * Not, “Who is to blame?” * Not, “Can I justify this?” Just: Is this what you want? * Do you want to be tired all the time? * Do you want to be frustrated all the time? * Do you want to keep being defensive? * Do you want to keep being sarcastic? * Do you want to keep living as the victim? * Do you want to keep reacting in a way that does not match who you say you want to become? That question brings the conversation back to ownership. Everyone has been hurt. Everyone has been angry. Everyone has been silent. Everyone has wanted control. Everyone has had moments where they reacted from pain. The issue is not whether we have been there. The issue is whether we are going to camp there. Truth bomb: You may not have chosen what taught you the reaction, but you can choose whether it keeps leading you. Practical Tools From the Episode The episode gives listeners a practical way to move from automatic reaction to intentional response. The first tool is to pause. Even five seconds can change the outcome. Before speaking, ask: what am I actually feeling? Is this about now, or is this about something from before? The second tool is to name the trigger. I feel dismissed. I feel disrespected. I feel rejected. I feel ignored. I feel vulnerable. I feel out of control. Naming the trigger gives you power over it. The third tool is to separate past from present. Ask yourself: is this person actually my past, or am I reacting to history? Is this the same environment, or does it only feel familiar? The fourth tool is to choose a new script. This was one of the strongest practical takeaways from Odette and Janine’s conversation around Parenting Scripts . Instead of exploding, say, “Can you finish your thought?” Instead of shutting down, say, “I need a minute.” Instead of becoming sarcastic, say, “That hurt.” Instead of controlling everything, say, “I feel unsure, and I need to understand this better.” The fifth tool is to evaluate afterwards. Not in shame. Not as self-punishment. Sit with the moment and ask: what did that situation touch inside of me? When have I felt this before? How did I respond this time? What would I like to do differently next time? Odette also reminds listeners that new responses need to be practised. You cannot simply say, “I want to be different,” without deciding what different looks like. Athletes visualise success before they perform. In the same way, we can visualise and practise the person we want to become. You cannot become a new version of yourself with an old script on repeat. Key Questions for the You the Listener * Who taught me to react this way? * Where did I learn this response? * Was it my family, my environment, my workplace, my culture, a trauma, or a survival season? * Does this reaction still serve me? * What is this reaction trying to protect? * What do I feel first: anger, fear, shame, silence, sarcasm, control, or withdrawal? * Is this about what is happening now, or am I reacting to something from before? * What would the healed version of me do instead? You are not crazy. You have a pattern. And patterns can be noticed. Patterns can be questioned. Patterns can be rewritten. Patterns can be broken. You may not be able to control the first feeling that comes up in your body. You can control the next move you make. That is where intentionality begins. Not in pretending you were never hurt. Not in blaming everyone who shaped you. Not in shaming yourself for how you survived. It begins in the moment where you pause and say: This may be how I learned to react, but this is not how I want to keep responding. Our reactions tell a story, but they do not have to write our future. If this episode made you think of a pattern in your own life, do not ignore that moment. Write it down. Sit with it. Ask yourself where it came from and whether it still serves the person you are becoming. And if this conversation reminded you of someone else, share it with them. Not to accuse them. Not to diagnose them. To open a conversation that may help them respond differently too. Stay IN10TIONAL. This is a public episode. #E063 I’m Not Busy. I’m Being IN10TIONAL.

People have been asking me the same question lately: “Dr. Janine, what are you doing? You seem so busy.” And yes, I am busy, but I want to rephrase that. I’m being very IN10TIONAL. A few years ago, I started seeing that marketing was changing. There were whispers of AI, customer behaviour was shifting, and I knew the business landscape was going to change with it. I started looking at our own environment, what we offered as a business and what we would need to change if we wanted to remain relevant. I remember sitting in a Leadership Boardroom session when Dr Mark Manley said something that has stayed with me ever since: “Strategy is set in jelly.” That clicked for me. You absolutely need a strategy, objectives and a direction, but your strategy cannot become so rigid that your business cannot move when the environment changes. And right now, things are changing incredibly fast. We got our team involved with AI early. We learned the tools, then went deeper and deeper into understanding what they could do and what they would mean for marketing and business. Through that process, something else became very clear to me. Almost everything I do today fits into three areas: * I grow companies through tools. * I grow the people who lead those companies. * I put those people into communities where they can continue to grow. That has become the ecosystem around my work. 1. Grow the Company As the JDC Group of Companies, we are a fully fledged marketing agency. You may know and recognize us as Learn Social Media We work across strategy, graphic design, websites, digital marketing, social media and the different marketing tools businesses need to grow. But there is something I have said for years that business owners need to understand: your brand is your reputation, marketing is the tools, and sales is an organisational function performed by a person. Those three things work together, but they are not the same thing. You cannot keep posting on social media and call that a marketing strategy. You cannot expect marketing to do the job of sales. And you cannot build a reputation once and assume that it will take care of itself. There is a process. * You have to build the brand and the reputation. * You have to make people aware that you exist. * You have to understand your customer. * You need the correct marketing tools, * and then your sales function needs to use those tools to turn opportunities into business. This is also why I still believe in traditional marketing. I believe in digital marketing. I believe in social media, websites, books, podcasts, radio and face-to-face conversations. The days of choosing one channel and expecting it to carry your entire business are disappearing. Your Customer Decides Where You Need to Be I often hear business owners say, “I don’t like social media.” Okay. But does your customer? That is the question. Different generations spend their attention in different places. Even that changes as people get older. Your customers move through different platforms, their buying behaviour changes and the way they want to interact with businesses changes. You need to understand: * Who is your ideal customer? * Where do they spend their attention? * What problem are they trying to solve? * How do they want to interact with you? * What needs to happen before they trust you enough to buy? * What happens after they become a customer? Your marketing cannot be built around where you feel comfortable showing up. It needs to be built around where the customer you want to serve is already paying attention. 2. Grow the Person Then something interesting happens when the marketing starts working and the company grows. The leader starts struggling. There are suddenly more people, more decisions, more responsibility, more accountability and more pressure. The business has increased its capacity, but the person leading it has not necessarily increased theirs at the same rate. This is where the consulting, strategy, workshops and G.R.I.T. coaching side of my work comes in. If we are going to help you grow a bigger company, we also need to help you become the person capable of leading that bigger company. For a long time, this equation worked incredibly well. We grew the company through the tools, and then we grew the leader to manage what that growth demanded. Then I started seeing another dip. Something was still missing. 3. Put the Person Into Community That missing piece was community . I have said for years that people buy from people they like, love and trust , and I believe more strongly than ever that community is the currency of the future. This thinking is also becoming an important part of my work around IN10SIVE Business and The Delta Code™ . A business does not exist independently. It operates inside an ecosystem, and so does the person leading it. You need people around you who understand what it means to carry a company. You need people who challenge your thinking, open their networks, share their experience and sometimes simply tell you, “I’ve dealt with this before. Here’s what worked for me.” This is why communities such as the Leadership Boardroom and The CEO Collective have become such an important part of what I am building. We grow the company. We grow the person. Then we surround that person with an ecosystem that can help them continue growing. So, Where Are You in the Process? This may be the most important question I ask in this entire episode. Where are you? * Maybe you need the tools. * Your website needs attention,. * Your marketing has become inconsistent. * You have been posting for years without a proper strategy, or your business has evolved, and your brand hasn’t caught up with it. * Maybe your business is growing beautifully, but you know that you need to catch up with what you have built . * Your leadership needs attention, your capacity needs to increase or you need somebody outside the business who can help you think through the decisions you are carrying. * Or maybe you have both of those pieces working, but you are doing too much of it alone. You need the room. You need relationships. You need accountability and access to other leaders who understand the road you are walking. Sometimes the reason you are stuck is simply that you don’t know where you are in the process. And until you understand where you are, it becomes very difficult to work out what needs to happen next. Yes, I’m Officially a Radio Host Too And then there is another question I’ve been getting lately because apparently I haven’t found enough places to talk yet. 😂 Yes, I am officially a radio host too. I am incredibly excited about this part of the journey because it fits directly into what I am speaking about in this episode. If we understand that our audiences are consuming information in different places, then we need to be willing to meet them there. I write. I podcast. I create social media content. I speak face-to-face. I publish books. I still believe in traditional marketing. And now I am taking these conversations onto radio as well. #E62 | 40 Years, 10 Principles, One IN10TIONAL Life

Today’s episode is personal. Very personal. I turn 40 on the 14th of April. And I want to tell you what I actually built. Not the link in bio version, the real version. Fair warning: writing the blog that goes with this episode was the longest anything has ever taken me. I did not expect the influx of emotion, memories, trauma, and celebration those words would carry. So this episode is the same. Raw. Straight from the heart. And for the record, my version of celebrating a birthday is a good South African braai with friends, a Cadbury slab, and a strong coffee. So we are doing this properly. Oh — and tonight, on my actual birthday, I am not at a party. I am running the IN10TEEN programme. Moms and their daughters. Because the best thing you can do with what you have built is give it to the next generation while you still can. That is not sacrifice. That is the whole point. SEGMENT 1: THE ORDER MATTERS Before I tell you what I built, I need to tell you how I define success. Because if we are not working from the same definition, the rest of this conversation will not make sense. The world defines success by what is visible. Revenue. Title. Followers. A PhD — which, yes, I now have, and I worked hard for it; but even that is not the thing. Here is my definition: A living relationship with God. A healthy marriage. Children who are whole and loved. Relationships chosen with rigour. A business that does not just serve clients, it develops them. That is success. Everything else is fruit. And the order matters. Most people build the career first and hope the rest follows. I built soul first, then family, then relationships, then business. I will be honest — I had a do-over in getting that sequence right. But I got there. And that sequence is the reason I can stand at 40 with no regrets. Not a perfect life. An IN10TIONAL one. SEGMENT 2: THE SIX GOALS Before this milestone, I had six things I wanted to have built. Here is the honest report. Goal 1: A happy marriage. Still choosing it every day. Marriage is a discipline, not a destination. And every day we are both right — well, if you know me, I actually like to be wrong, because then I learn. So let’s say he is right more often. It works for us. Goal 2: Great kids. Healthy. Loved. Grounded. Goal reached. I never thought I would have so many — but I am so happy. They colour in my world. Goal 3: A healthy body. This one cost me the most. Health has been a genuine struggle not a checkbox, not a season, a real ongoing fight. I am more IN10TIONAL about my body today than I have ever been. I want to say a specific thank you here to Claire Julsing Strydom and Dr. Mary Atkinson for taking my hand and walking me through this journey of becoming strong. You do not always do it alone, and you should not have to. Goal 4: Write a book. I’m at book three. The principles kept producing more than one book could hold. Goal 5: Build a business that builds other businesses. Seventeen years. Three companies. Clients who have grown because of what we built together. I used to call myself a serial entrepreneur, it felt good, I enjoyed the chase. But through the years I realised depth matters more to me than adding another line to the list. Quality over quantity. Always. Goal 6: Surround myself with IN10TIONAL people. Relationships have always been central to who I am. The people in my circle are deliberate choices. And I protect that circle accordingly. Six goals. Six results. None of it accidental growth. SEGMENT 3: THE 10 IN10TIONAL PRINCIPLES — LIVED, NOT LECTURED My book IN10TIONALITY: Ten Ways to Live a Rewarding and IN10TIONAL Life is built on ten principles. I did not teach them in a classroom and then live differently outside it. I applied them, imperfectly, consistently, across four decades. Here is what each one produced. 1. Be IN10TIONAL about your Soul. The birthing place of everything. Every time I was tempted to build for applause instead of purpose, this principle corrected me. I am solid on having an eternal mindset, purpose-driven, not instant-gratification driven. I work in social media. I know the difference between the two. Deeply. 2. Be IN10TIONAL about your Relationships. I chose my people carefully. IN10TIONAL friendship is a leadership discipline, not a soft skill. The people around you are either investments or withdrawals. Choose accordingly. 3. Be IN10TIONAL about your Community. I did not build in isolation. A business that builds other businesses. A coaching community. A platform. A peer advisory network. I say this all the time, community is the currency of the future. Why not become part of one that is actually building something? 4. Be IN10TIONAL about your Happiness. This one surprised people when I wrote it. But happiness is a decision you make before circumstances cooperate. I decided what would fill my life, a braai with people I love, a good coffee, meaningful work, my faith, and I built my life around those things. Not the other way around. 5. Be IN10TIONAL about your Finances. The habits came before the results. Always. Financial discipline is not something you develop after the money arrives, it is what makes the money stay. 6. Be IN10TIONAL about your Business. Seventeen years. Three companies. A PhD. A platform. John Maxwell certified. All of it built by design, not default. And here is what I want you to hear, being greater is not about EGO. You know what I am about to say. It is about ECO. The ecosystem around you. The people you develop. The legacy you leave in the organisations you touch. 7. Be IN10TIONAL about what makes you Stronger. I have one temple, and I am determined to keep it strong for this earthly mission I am on. The health battle was real. It still is. But physical discipline gave me the capacity to sustain everything else. You cannot pour from empty. 8. Be IN10TIONAL about what makes your Mind Healthy. Mental health is not a swear word. It is the infrastructure that houses stability, resilience, and longevity. What you rehearse in your mind, you eventually perform in your life. We have the mind of Christ, that is a good starting point. Keep it healthy. 9. Be IN10TIONAL about your Future, Plan Ahead. Six goals. Written down. Worked on. Reached. I did not arrive at 40 by default. I planned, built, adjusted, and kept moving. And now I am asking myself, what is next? That is the question worth sitting with at every milestone. 10. Be IN10TIONAL about your Team. JDC Digital. JDC Academy. JDC Corp. The Leadership Boardroom. The CEO Collective. Learn Social Media. The IN10TIONALIST community. None of it runs on one person. Your ceiling is determined by the people around you. Choose your team IN10TIONALLY. SEGMENT 4: WHAT 40 ACTUALLY FEELS LIKE I get this question a lot. And you probably ask it about your own milestones too. There were seasons that tested every principle on this list simultaneously. Seasons where discipline was the only architecture still standing. Seasons where I had to choose, again and again, to be the person I said I was going to be. That is the part the highlight reel skips. It is also the part worth the most. 40 does not feel like a goodbye. It feels like a hi. Hi to purpose. Hi to showing you how to live IN10TIONALLY even more deliberately than before. Not just hello to my future, hello to yours as well. SEGMENT 5: THE BIRTHDAY GIFT Most people turn 40 and receive gifts. I want to give one. IN10TIONALLYme — my personal growth and coaching platform — is live. It is built on the same ten principles I just walked you through. And to mark this milestone, I am opening access at a rate that will not be available again. Monthly 1-on-1 coaching. 24/7 support. The full resource library. Private community. Monthly live expert webinars. Progress and goal tracking. Full LSM course access. IN10TEEN, IN10 Industry Leader, and IN10CEO programmes. Normal rate: R2,500 per month. Birthday rate: R1,600 per month. That is R900 back in your pocket — every month. This closes at midnight on 14 April. 72 hours. That is it. Comment BIRTHDAY in the show notes or go to the link directly. And for the first 10 subscribers — I am giving away 10 free book sets. Both IN10TIONALITY and It Is Finished . #E061 If One Bad Client Can Break Your Business, You Don’t Have a Business —> You Have a Funnel.

Let’s get real: too many businesses are built like glass. One drop of ink, one bad review, one unhappy client, one failed promise, and the entire thing is stained. If your entire reputation can be shattered by a single customer experience, what you’ve built isn’t sustainable. It is fragile. That’s not a business. That’s a funnel . Funnels are linear. Transactional. Self-serving. They’re obsessed with conversions and clicks, not connection or continuity. Once the “lead” drops out the bottom, the system resets. It’s cold. It’s clinical. And worst of all, it’s brittle. A funnel doesn’t account for the reputation cost of poor service, nor the long-term trust capital of one raving fan. But nature doesn’t move in lines. It moves in loops . That’s why I build using the flywheel . A circular rhythm. A system designed around the customer, not the company. One that gains momentum over time and doesn’t collapse if something goes wrong, it simply slows down and self-corrects. In today’s episode of the podcast, I unpack why circular growth systems outperform linear funnels in the real world. I explain why your business reputation is not built in campaigns, it’s built in cycles . And how, when you’re intentional about rhythm, relationship, and reputation, you build something that doesn’t break every time life does. This isn’t theory. It’s the system I use across every business in the JDC Group of companies. From marketing to consulting to product delivery, everything flows through one central ecosystem: Customer First. Strategy Second. Systems Always. Here’s what I unpack in this episode: * Why the sales funnel is ego-centric, and the flywheel is ecosystem-centric * What I learned from adding one drop of ink to a full glass of water, and how that visual changed the way I build trust * How to recover from mistakes without losing momentum * Why momentum makes you look better than you are (and how to earn that advantage ethically) * A reputation-first checklist for building a business that doesn’t bleed You’ll also hear my personal blueprint. From company structure to pricing strategy, marketing rhythms to client retention. Designed to protect the brand , not just push product. It’s mechanics. It’s not just systems. Understanding Teen Isolation. When Your Daughter Starts to Pull Away (Part 2)

Teen isolation is one of the most misunderstood challenges in motherhood. In this episode, Janine and Letitia explore why girls withdraw emotionally, what’s happening beneath the silence, and how moms can gently reconnect without overwhelming their daughters. A heartfelt conversation filled with insight, empathy, and practical encouragement, perfect for any mom raising a teen girl who feels “far away” even when she’s right in front of you. A podcast conversation with Janine & Letitia There is a particular kind of loneliness mothers feel, the kind that arrives quietly when your daughter, the girl who once told you everything, begins to retreat into herself. Sometimes it’s subtle. A shorter answer. A closed door. A smile that doesn’t quite reach her eyes. And sometimes it’s a moment that catches you off guard, the realisation that she is surrounded by people, yet somehow more alone than she’s ever been. This episode was born out of that moment. Letitia and I sit down to talk about what’s happening underneath teenage isolation, not the behaviour, but the heart behind it.Because isolation is rarely about attitude. It’s almost always about overwhelm. We explore why girls withdraw even when they’re loved deeply and supported well. Why “I’m fine” can be a shield, not a truth. Why she may struggle to explain what she’s feeling, even to you, especially to you. And we talk about the unspoken fear many moms carry: “If she’s pulling away from me, am I losing her?” You’re not. You’re meeting her in a transition she doesn’t yet know how to manage. Throughout the episode, we gently unpack the hidden pressures teens are carrying, the comparison, the sensory overload, the rapid-fire friendship shifts, the shame that silences them, the fear of disappointing you, and the digital world that keeps them connected while somehow making them feel lonelier than ever. But this conversation isn’t just about understanding isolation. It’s about reconnection . We share the small, almost unremarkable ways moms can help their daughters step out of emotional hiding: * Ways to soften the space between you. * Ways to speak safety into her nervous system. * Ways to create moments where she doesn’t need to perform, pretend, or protect herself. In the episode, you’ll hear us talk about how presence becomes a lifeline, why tone matters more than timing, and the surprising rituals that rebuild trust. This is a compassionate, grounding conversation.A reminder that isolation is not rejection, it’s a coping mechanism. And that your daughter isn’t pulling away from you…she’s trying to find herself. If your teen has been quieter lately or harder to reach, this episode will feel like someone finally naming the thing you’ve sensed but couldn’t articulate. It’s tender. It’s honest. It’s hopeful. And it’s yours. If this episode spoke to you, imagine what a guided journey with your daughter could unlock. The IN10TEEN Program begins March 2026. A four-week experience designed to strengthen identity, emotional resilience, communication, and connection between moms and teen girls. We keep the room small on purpose.Just 10 moms.Just 10 daughters.A safe space to grow together. Your ticket includes your seats at our GALA Evening in November — a beautiful night of celebration, storytelling, and a crowning moment your daughter will never forget. Talk Teen To Me. Why Moms and Teen Girls Stop Hearing Each Other (Part 1)

A podcast conversation with Janine & Letitia. Communication between moms and teen girls changes long before either of them realises it. What used to feel natural suddenly becomes fragile, unpredictable, and deeply emotional. In this episode, Janine and Letitia unpack what’s really happening beneath the surface when girls shut down, why moms feel unheard, and how to rebuild connection without pressure or performance. It’s a soft, honest conversation about presence, empathy, and the ordinary moments that strengthen the mother–daughter bond. Perfect for any mom who wants to understand her teen better and reconnect with confidence and compassion. There’s a moment every mother recognises but can’t quite name, a shift so subtle yet so powerful that it leaves her wondering when communication with her daughter became… complicated. You ask a simple question. She shuts down. You offer advice. She turns away. You reach for connection. She pulls back, not out of rebellion but out of overwhelm. And no one prepares you for this part of motherhood, the part where you’re still the safest person in her world, yet somehow the hardest to speak to. That’s why Letitia ( Life with Letitia ) and I recorded this episode. We wanted to open a window into the world of teen girls, not from a theoretical place, but from the lived, raw emotional space where moms and daughters often miss each other without meaning to. In our conversation, we talk about: * why teens speak in fragments, memes, and reels… and why that’s not disrespect, it’s survival. * We explore the quiet ways daughters try to stay connected, even when they don’t have the words. * And we name the invisible emotional load moms carry while trying to hold the relationship steady. Because underneath every disconnected moment is a daughter who still wants to feel seen, and a mother who still wants to be trusted. This episode isn’t about fixing communication. It’s about understanding it. It’s about slowing the pace, softening the edges, and learning new ways to reach one another that feel less like pressure and more like presence. We share the small shifts that rebuild connection, the moments that don’t look like much from the outside but become anchoring points on the inside. The sideways conversations. The rituals that make her feel safe. The language that helps her open up without feeling exposed. And yes, we talk about the real stuff…What to do when she withdraws. How to speak to her heart without overwhelming her.Why your tone matters more than your words. And the surprising communication door most moms haven’t considered. By the end of the episode, many moms tell us they feel less alone, not because their daughter has changed, but because they finally understand what’s happening underneath her silence. This is a gentle episode. A human one. An invitation back to one another. If you’re a mom raising a teen girl and wondering why communication suddenly feels harder than it should be… this conversation is for you. And if you listen closely, you may find that nothing is broken between you, you simply need a new way of hearing each other. There are seasons in motherhood that call for deeper connection. If you’re in one of those seasons now, the IN10TEEN Program was created with you in mind. Across four intentional weeks, you and your daughter will learn how to communicate with confidence, understand one another with compassion, and build a foundation strong enough to carry you through the teenage years. And when the journey ends, you’ll step into our November GALA Evening — dressed up, celebrated, and crowned together. There are only 10 mother–daughter seats available. If this feels like your moment, we’d love to welcome you in. This is a public episode. 🎙️ Ep8 Off Topic but On Point. Reflect, Reset, Reframe: Preparing Your Inner World for What’s Next

There are seasons when life feels loud. When the world is rushing. When you’re trying to hold the center while everything around you keeps shifting. And then there comes a moment — usually subtle, quiet, almost unannounced — when you realize: * It’s time to pause. * To breathe. * To reset the inner landscape before stepping into what’s next. This episode is about that moment. As we edge toward a new year, most people wait for the calendar to tell them who they should become. But purpose-driven people, people who want to build with meaning. Prepare differently. * They plan from intention, not pressure. * They build from alignment, not hustle. * They lead families, businesses, and themselves from a clarity that comes from the inside out. Welcome to Off Topic, but On Point .I’m Odette de Beer — wife, mother, strategist, and a woman who believes the heart must be touched before the mind can be influenced and the hands can be empowered. With me are two of my closest friends: Pastor Christo Pretorius and Dr. Janine Do Cabo . And today, we’re going to reflect , reset , and reframe what it truly means to step into a new year better , not just busier. 🔹 Segment 1: Reflect Before you rush into vision boards and goals, reflection anchors you.Reflection is not about looking back with regret — it’s looking back with revelation . In this segment, we explore: * What this year revealed about who we are becoming * The identity shifts we didn’t see coming * The habits that helped us… and the ones that hurt us * The emotional patterns that keep repeating themselves * What surprised us most about this season Reflection is the doorway to clarity — and clarity collapses confusion. 🔹 Segment 2: Reset Resetting is not retreating. Resetting is recalibrating. It’s the internal shift where you say: “Before I step into more, I must make space for better.” In this segment, we discuss: * What we’re letting go of before the new year * The internal narratives we’re rewriting * How to reset your emotional rhythm * Why rest is not the absence of work — it’s the strengthening of alignment * The power of slowing down to speed up Resetting is the quiet courage leadership is built on. 🔹 Segment 3: Reframe Reframing is where hope and discipline meet. It’s where you decide to see your life through a different lens — not denial, but direction. In this segment, we unpack: * How to step into a new year with intention, not illusion * Why reframing isn’t pretending — it’s positioning * The story you tell yourself about your future * Why identity shapes outcomes more than goals do * What we’re reframing personally as we cross into a new chapter Reframing is the art of stepping into the same world with a stronger perspective. 🌟 Final Thoughts Stepping into a new year isn’t about becoming a new person. It’s about becoming a truer version of the person you already are. When you reflect , you gain understanding. When you reset , you gain strength. When you reframe , you gain vision. And vision… changes everything. Engage With Us What are you reflecting on?What is something you’re resetting before the year ends? And what one thought, belief, or fear are you reframing as you step forward? Sorry for the Skew Face (Zoom Lag) — But Here’s Your 2026 Business Growth Plan

Let’s be honest — today’s Marketing Cosmetics session was a bit chaotic. The internet had other plans, Zoom froze mid-sentence, and I’m convinced someone’s cat was presenting for at least three seconds. But here’s the thing: in between all that buffering, something powerful happened. We cracked open the single most under-rated marketing weapon for 2026.And it’s not a viral trend, a shiny funnel, or a paid ad. It’s email. The quiet powerhouse that’s still outperforming every platform you scroll through. Before we go any further, a little insider moment. If you’re reading this, it means you’re part of my community — and that matters. The Marketing Cosmetics flagship program sells for R32,000 , but because you’re already on my email list, you qualify for exclusive IN10TIONAL Access Pricing — R14,000 for the full 5-month program. And if you’re already enrolled, you get insider access — which means anyone you personally bring into the February intake can also join at R14,000 instead of the standard R32,000. This is my way of saying thank you for being part of the ecosystem we’re building — one that rewards loyalty, leadership, and foresight. Because you didn’t just follow the brand. You belonged before it became a trend. The Real Truth About Where Growth Is Happening in 2026 (Yes three months from now) Social media builds awareness.Email builds relationships. Your follower count might make you feel famous —but your email list makes you money. In 2025, businesses are earning R37 for every R1 spent on email marketing (HubSpot 2025). That’s a 3 700% ROI — better than TikTok, Meta ads, or influencer collaborations combined. And before you assume email is “old-school,” let’s kill that myth right now: 78% of Gen Z and Millennials actually prefer brand communication via email because it gives them control. They open it when they want. That’s the difference between attention and in10tion . 🚀 Enrollment Window now open for the February 2026 Cohort. What We Covered (and Why It Matters for You) Inside today’s live session — the slightly wobbly one — we broke down the entire ecosystem for your 2026 marketing plan: 1. Building your list — the right way. You don’t buy followers; you build trust.Interactive lead magnets like quizzes and templates are outperforming static PDFs by 41%. 2. Designing campaigns that convert. Rule of one: one email, one message. Within three seconds, your reader should know what you’re offering and why it matters. 3. Automation and AI. Tools like HubSpot AI, Mailchimp AI, and Klaviyo now predict send-times based on behaviour.Brands using AI-timed sends are seeing 12–18% higher open rates. 4. Measuring success. Forget open rates — privacy changes made them unreliable. The new gold standards: click-through rate, conversions, and engagement per subscriber. Top performers right now hit 5.5% CTR and unsubscribe rates under 0.3%. Marketing Cosmetics is the answer for brand, sales and marketing! Learn it. Build it. Launch it in 3 months, starting this February. Have your full marketing strategy done in 12 sessions — with expert help at every step. Thanks for reading 10 IN10TIONAL Minutes with Janine! This post is public so feel free to share it. The Integration Most Brands Miss Here’s where most marketers fall flat — they treat social media and email like divorced parents fighting for custody of your customer’s attention. Stop that. Your customer doesn’t experience your brand in silos. They see your Instagram post, click your link, land on your site, download a freebie, and open your email — all within minutes. That’s one continuous story. So, here’s how to keep it consistent: * Email: the full story * Instagram: the visual hook * TikTok: the behind-the-scenes * LinkedIn: the insight post This is called content synergy. When your message sounds the same across platforms, your audience doesn’t just remember your post — they remember you. What This Means for 2026 The next wave of growth isn’t about chasing algorithms — it’s about owning your ecosystem. You can’t control social platforms, but you can control your inbox, your data, and your relationships. Social media is your megaphone. Email is your handshake. When you use both with IN10TION, you don’t just get seen — you get remembered. Your Next Step If you loved this insight, this is just one of 12 full sessions inside the Marketing Cosmetics program — where we teach entrepreneurs how to turn strategy into sales, systems, and scale. 🚀 Enrollment Window now open for the February 2026 Cohort. Build your brand with substance.Market it with IN10TION.And let your results speak louder than the algorithm. This is a public episode. 🎙️Ep7 Off-Topic but On-Point: The Rooms That Remind You Who You Are

🔥 Why This Topic Hits Right Now and why you should be apart it We are in a post-digital burnout era. Zoom fatigue, algorithmic isolation, and the illusion of connection through vanity metrics have left coaches, teachers, and leaders hungry for something deeper: real, in-person transformation. The trend isn’t just nostalgia—it’s a recalibration. Because if the last few years taught us anything, it’s this: screens scale your voice, but rooms shape your vision. More and more thought leaders are realizing: “If I want to grow, I need a room where I’m not the smartest person.” And in the coaching and consulting world, the future doesn’t belong to those who only master technique — it belongs to those who can build ecosystems of trust, alignment, and embodiment. And those ecosystems are being built offline again. 10 IN10TIONAL Minutes with Janine is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber. 🔍 Let’s Go Deeper: The Core Conversations We’ll Be Having in This Episode 1. The Re-Rise of the Room There’s a noticeable shift happening — from webinars to workshops, from funnels to fireside conversations. In-person masterminds, curated boardrooms, and private learning circles are back. Why? Because transformation travels faster through trust. We answer: “What’s the most powerful in-person room you’ve ever been in — and what did it unlock for you?” 2. Why Coaches, Consultants, Teacher, Entrepreneurs & YOU Must Be in the Right Room Your proximity affects your perception. Your vision expands in the presence of aligned people. And let’s be honest — no mirror is as honest as a trusted table of peers. “Online gives you scale. But in-person gives you substance.” “What does a great room do for your identity, not just your brand?” 3. What’s Changing in 2025 and 2026 Remember I have been tell you COMMUNITY IS THE CURRENCY OF THE FUTURE.. well here we go and this is how it is going to look like! We’re not just seeing collabs for content — we’re seeing collaborations that prioritize character and growth . Real alliances are being built around legacy, integrity, and long-term vision — not just launch calendars. More than ever, people are craving: * Safety to be seen * Synergy of thought and purpose * Strategy rooted in humanity The coaching industry is evolving — facilitation is no longer enough. The real edge? Community curation. “Why do you think people are willing to invest more now to be in curated rooms rather than free webinars or public online groups?” 4. What to Look for in a Room The best rooms aren’t the biggest. They’re the most aligned. Look for: * Trust over trophies * Curated over crowded * Legacy over ego * Story over strategy “If the room requires you to perform, it’s not your room. If it helps you return to who you are, stay.” 5. If You’re Not in a Room Yet… Here’s Where to Start Start with resonance, not recognition. Don’t chase the room with the most followers — go where your becoming is safe. * Join circles that reflect your values, not just your goals. * Start small. A monthly peer group, a local coffee table, a trusted triad. * Remember: You don’t need 100 people. You need 10 honest ones. Are you looking for a room like this? We each run our own: * Dr. Janine and Gustav Gous – The Leadership Boardroom - Randburg, JHB, South Africa * Christo – The Collective - Boksburg, JHB South Africa * Odette – SustainHer - Adelaide, Australia These aren’t marketing funnels. They’re transformational rooms. DM us or comment to learn how to join. “What’s the room that changed you — and how do you make sure you’re now creating that kind of space for others?” This is a public episode.
