Hi all,
I'm not very keen on end-of-year posts, but I do feel that this time it's worth looking back a bit, and more importantly, also looking forward. So here I go, 2025 and 2026 from my perspective as a Joomla SEO and content extensions developer.

4Command: Joomla administration, simpler and faster
Today, we're introducing 4Command. It complements Joomla's classical menu-based navigation system with a command palette and keyboard shortcuts.
the command palette lets you search and run things fast and without knowing where they are
keyboard shortcuts lets you do things with 2 keystrokes instead of 2 page loads
4Command adds shortcuts to Joomla toolbars such as Ctrl/command + S to Save
If you do not or cannot use a mouse, then 4Command helps you navigate Joomla admin tremendously
If you are around, please join me and the Small Business Joomla User Group for a quick live presentation of 4Command.
on Thursday May 16, at 11AM Eastern Time (8AM Pacific Time, 3PM UTC)
All details in the linked blog post as usual.

User question: what does canonical URL means?
Hi all,
I've been meaning to write about the concept of canonical for a while and this week, a comment at the end of a support ticket finally prompted me to do so.
The thing is, canonical is used (mostly) in two different ways and they seem to contradict each other:
a page is canonical (or not)
a page has a canonical tag
The confusing part is that:
when a page has a canonical tag, it's usually because it's not canonical
How is that possible and should you care anyway?

Google new Core Web Vitals and updates + OpenAI pricing model change
Google just had not one but two official algorithm updates, and then started to apply manual penalties to a lot of sites the next day.
Also, OpenAI changes their pricing model for accessing their API, to a pre-paid credit system.
And finally we just released updates for 4AI, 4SEO and 4SEF!

Price changes and sh404SEF discontinued soon
Being a developer and not a business person, and coming from a history of free of charge extensions, I've always been reluctant to increase prices.
But something's gotta give, and from today I'm applying the new pricing scheme which debuted with 4AI, our Joomla AI-powered assistant a few months back.
4SEO, 4SEF, and 4Podcast now also have 2 subscriptions each: Regular has updates and support for 3 sites while PRO is for up to 200 sites
the 3-sites subscriptions keep the same prices as before - except for 4SEF which price will slightly increase
All details in the podcast, together with the confirmation of sh404SEF discontinuation date.

4AI - New AI-powered Joomla assistant
I believe chat-like interfaces such as ChatGPT are a good fit for many use cases but not the best for all - and I'm not the only one to think that by the way.
And so here are the guiding principles for designing 4AI, the new Joomla assistant that we launched a couple of weeks ago at JoomlaDay Netherlands:
Integrate directly with Joomla (3&4) where it makes sense to use AI in practical ways for common tasks.
Provide an always-on assistant that can be used (mostly) without typing in long questions.
Use responses by clicking a button rather than tedious copy/paste and reformatting.
As with all our extensions, documentation is available here, including a video of my talk at JoomlaDay Netherland 2 weeks ago.
Join Tim Davis and me for a live presentation on Tim's BasicJoomla YouTube channel:
on Wednesday May 31st, at 6PM UTC (2PM US Eastern, 8PM Central European Time)

Using JoomSEF or MijoSEF on Joomla 3? how to update to Joomla 4 today
This episode is about a pressing issue for many Joomla 3 website owners who use either of the JoomSEF or MijoSEF SEF URLs extensions. As neither have a Joomla 4 version, upgrading to Joomla 4 means losing:
SEF URLs, especially custom onesc
custom page titles and meta description
custom redirects
Losing all SEF URLs is particularly catastrophic as it means losing all rankings in Google and other search engines. At best, with a successful set of redirects, the traffic loss can be limited to a few weeks.
But there's a solution for this, using sh404SEF and its JoomSEF/MijoSEF importer. While sh404SEF itself is of course not Joomla 4-compatible, once you have it, it's easy to transition to 4SEF + 4SEO.
And these can work both on Joomla 3 and 4 transparently.
So upgrading JoomSEF/MijoSEF sites to Joomla 4 is not exactly straightforward, but it's not that hard either, and most importantly does not require extensive or technical manual work.

Selected podcasts for Joomla SEO from my playlist
I like podcasts, so much that we made 4Podcast to help you run your own podcast(s) using just your Joomla website. Most of the podcasts I listen to are tech and SEO oriented, so I figured it would be a good idea to share them here.
While only one is Joomla-specific, they certainly explore topics that most Joomla website developers and owners should find of interest.
